Neon Flux Art Talk

Neon Flux Artist Talk // April 20th, 2023 // Join moderator + Neon Flux curator Cass Garner for an exploration into the artistic methods of Merick Reed, S. Catrin Magnusson, and Tiffany Lange.

We invite you to join us for an evening of conversation with Neon Flux artists, Merick Reed, S. Catrin Magnusson, and Tiffany Lange, and moderator for the night, Cass Garner. Set amidst the featured exhibit Neon Flux, which playfully nods at minimalism with the use of black and white, and simple structures, incorporating pops of neon color. The three contemporary artists will share the vision behind their work across varied disciplines, including: photography, sculpture, ceramics, paintings, installation, and furniture design.

The harmonious accent hues and bold patterns each artist use throughout Neon Flux engage the viewers’ subtle sense of movement, despite the static nature of the artwork. Merick Reed explores the visual activation of light and shadow through interruption and deconstruction while S. Catrin Magnusson’s artwork reflects her personal experience of migration, connecting deep time and macro processes to her personal timeline. Tiffany Lange reveals themes of the digital age and our consumption of technology, reflecting experiences of gratification and over-stimulation through her abstract paintings and installation. Inspired by the artworks’ push and pull against each other, Cass Garner curated Neon Flux to embody the constant movement underfoot, unseen by our natural eye.

Tiffany Lange received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and a minor in Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Merick Reed is a modern minimalist sculptor, photographer, and designer living in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His work expresses simple, graphic geometry balancing a spare and highly refined aesthetic with raw brutalism. Influenced by architecture and contemporary design, his sculptural wall paintings are gestural arrangements, an interplay of dimensional facets, and saturated monochromatic panels. They explore visual activation and interest through considered surface interruption, producing variations in light and shadow and deconstruction of order.

Cass Garner is a graphic designer, art curator, and gallerist living and working in Minneapolis. A founder of Gamut Gallery, Cass began as a graphic designer and has grown with the gallery over time. Three years into business when the gallery was forced to relocate, she joined the ownership team and became the gallery manager where she applied her many years of retail and customer service experience. In the spring of 2018, Cass transitioned into the role of Gallery Director and now leads operations and project management for exhibitions and events. Cass’s curatorial practice has expanded since 2021, she produces over a dozen exhibits outside of Gamut Gallery in the course of a year throughout the HAUS Salons in Minneapolis.
