The 2020 MPLSART Sketchbook Project is a unique survey of the Twin Cities visual arts community during one of the most challenging years. 68 local artists contributed 120 pages of original work to a series of five traveling sketchbooks. The sketchbooks have been compiled into a beautiful 88 page hardcover book available for presale via Kickstarter March 2nd with all net-proceeds split among the featured artist.

When the sketchbooks were near the end of their travels, MPLSART connected with Gamut Gallery to host a pop-up exhibit to showcase the five original sketchbooks. Collaboratively, the concept evolved into a full length exhibition, featuring new works from a wide selection of the artists contributing to the project.

Given the magnitude of artists and limited wallspace, an open call was sent to all 68 artists and the first 35 to respond would have the opportunity to showcase an original work in the exhibition. In less than 24 hours, the roster filled up with established and emerging artists, creating an eclectic exhibition featuring muralists, studio artists, street artists, graphic novelists, collage artists, and more. Gamut attendees may recognize familiar names that have been on exhibit at Gamut in the past, and can look forward to 13 new artists who will be exhibiting their work in the gallery for the first time.

The exhibition has no defined theme, only a set of guidelines – works had to be new originals and available for under $500. Many artists drew inspiration from their sketchbook pages. In addition to featuring 35 original works, the exhibition will also be an opportunity to see the five original sketchbooks first-hand before going to auction at St. Paul based Revere Auctions.

    MEET THE ARTISTS

SYM1, formerly known as Symone Smash It, is currently blowing up. Claimed to be the ‘EDM pop maven’ of the Twin cites, SYM1 takes pride in reigniting the twin cities pop scene. Outsiders looking for a good time will find SYM1 a meteoric pop dream machine that bops hard.

BAARD is a Producer/DJ from Saint Paul. Music to him is the universal language that should be used as a tool to bring people together. As a Selector, his goal is to mix music seamlessly and thoughtfully to create an environment for those who wish to dance, connect or to simply escape.

Curandero The music, a fusion of pre-Columbian Indigenous instruments, house, and dance hall, is so fresh it doesn’t have a name yet. Reminiscent of the time before Afro-Beat had a name, Curandero’s music brings together traditional indigenous instrumentation and rhythms of Mesoamerica (Mexico) with electronic DJ elements and production. It’s a new sound that the next generation of urban indigenous latinx chican@people are hungry for–contemporary, danceable, and rooted in cultural identity. Produced, mixed, and mastered by Rico Simon Mendez a.k.a. DJ Don Cuco, Curandero is a mash-up of his dj stylings (which draw crowds of the most innovative underground hipsters in the city) plus Gustavo Lira and Xilam Balam on flutes, and Felipe Cuauhtli on percussion. The latter two are known for their hip-hop duo Los Nativos.

    HI HI CREATIVE
Suzanne Casler is a fine arts enthusiast with a degree to accompany her passion, and experience in Interior Design to round out her skill set. As a dreamer and a doer, you won’t find Suzanne sitting still…ever. She dives into a project with all she’s got, taking your napkin sketches or outlandish ideas into real life palettes of color, texture and form. Compelled to push the boundaries, HI HI is always experimenting with new materials, and re-imagining uses for unconventional ones. With a consistent sense of wonder, and a strong ability to execute, she’ll move your concept into a creation.

Gamut Gallery’s annual holiday event “Raging Art On” (RAO) returns this December with half of the 50 artists new to the show, and will run for three full weekends through December 22nd. Like years past, RAO is a cash-n-carry holiday sale in a gallery setting where there is literally art from ceiling to floor. It is “uncurated” in the sense that, aside from selecting who participates, the rest is left entirely up to the artists: what artwork to bring, how much to bring, and where it is hung. What results is a gallery packed to the brim with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

RAO will kick-off with a proper party featuring DJ Baard on Wednesday, December 5th from 7-10pm. Admission to this “first dibs” opener will be $20 or FREE with gallery membership. Capacity is limited, so reserve your ticket today: https://ragingarton2018.bpt.me

  4. C4W:2018

ARTISTS // Aaron Brand, Annie Hejny, Benjamin Wuest, Carla Rodriguez, Christopher E. Harrison, Christopher Palbicki , CL Martin, Derek Dwyer, Desi Moore, Elissa Cedarleaf Dahl, Eric Mueller, Erik Farseth, Grace Sippy, Jacob Docksey, James Schenck, Julia Wilson, Lisa Pemrick, Maggie Dimmick, Maxwell Mateikis, Meranda Turbak, Mic Stowell, Natalia Berglund, Nicholas Kovatch, Phaedra Odelle, Philip Noyed, Polly Norman, Roger Johnson, Terry Barczak, & Toni Gallo.

From political statements to traditional expression, delicate intricacies to abstracted geometries, human intimacy to surreal landscapes – C4W: 2018 curated by Tara LaPlante presents a kaleidoscopic range of styles, mediums, and artists’ points of view. More than 120 artists participated in Gamut Gallery’s “C4W: Call for Work” this year, submitting up to 5 pieces each of a wide range of visual media, including: video, installation art, sculpture, experimental technology, photography, fiber, drawing, painting, and collage.

While there is no predetermined theme for the C4W exhibitions, the guest curator brings their unique perspective and interpretation to the submitted works. LaPlante was particularly fascinated by the diversity of the submissions – a characteristic that embodies Gamut’s approach to programming, where we strive to run the gamut of various styles, content and media – and made her selections based on their high standard of work and distinct quality. “My vision is to immerse the viewer within the broad and bold strokes of these art forms together, saturated in the idea that diversity in itself can create strength, set intrigue, and act as the spark for conversation and humanity,” said LaPlante.

New this year, there will be two “Best in Show” awards. One will be selected by the guest curator and the other by opening night attendees. Both winners will be awarded $100 cash and Platinum Memberships to Gamut Gallery ($250 value). In addition to the opening reception, there will be other special events during the course of the exhibit: the 2nd annual Members Gala will be held on Saturday, November 10th; and, a screening of locally-produced short dramas will serve as the exhibit finale on Saturday, November 17th. Stay tuned to gamutgallerympls.com and our various social media channels for more information and special announcements leading up to the exhibit, plus more event details listed below.

    ABOUT THE CURATOR
Tara LaPlante is a visual artist, founder of the multimedia events brand Futra, and business manager for the motion graphics studio Immanent. Originally from Wisconsin, she graduated from Montana State with a BFA in Painting in 2000, and studied Art History abroad at Maastricht University in The Netherlands. After school she moved back to the Midwest to continue her creative endeavors. In Minneapolis, she co-founded the art collective Offbeat Gallery and record label Timefog, which was home to many international techno artists.

Tara’s relocation to Los Angeles in 2009 formed a change in her vision. The fusion of dance music culture and visual arts became the source of inspiration for Futra. Founded in 2012, this multimedia experience brand features DJ’s, producers, designers, performers, and visual artists through releases, podcasts, club events, and art spaces. Since 2015, the focus of Futra has altered to generating large-scale, concept-driven, multimedia gallery shows. Her personal art is colorful, abstract, and ranges from expressionistic to minimal in style. She currently works in painting, paper collage, and textile arts.
