  1. Coalescence

    Comments Off on Coalescence

This Spring, Gamut Gallery is kicking off the new ownership team’s inaugural exhibition.

To kick off the 2024 calendar year, Gamut Gallery’s new Director, Francesca Bernardi, partnered with Gamut’s former director, Cass Garner, to create the collaborative exhibition, Coalescence. To bring this conception to fruition this duo requested artist suggestions from the new ownership team, Francesca Bernardi, Kasi Aten, and Brian Oreck along with the co-founders of Gamut, Cass Garner Jade and James Patrick. As the new ownership team is transitioning into their roles, it was essential for them to connect with the community that has been part of Gamut’s roots.

The curators combed through all the suggestions to pull the most cohesive artists together who represent each owner and co-founder. Cass and Francesca are very excited to welcome back Briana Auel, Evan Weselmann, Kim Heidkamp, John Foster, Jessica Kitzman, Laurie Borggreve, Madison Rubenstein, Nelson Cain, seangarrison, Suyao Tian, and Rock Johnsen – 11 artists who have been part of Gamut’s story over the past 5 years.

Together, this roster of abstract artists was formed to bring a vivid multi-media exhibition that embraces the accessibility of Gamut featuring paintings, sculpture, and fiber art available at all price points and sizes. Many of the artists are creating works in the styles they are currently known for while incorporating nods to their past works that started their careers. This exhibition is guaranteed to give you the feels!

Join us for a conversation with exhibiting solo artist, Rock Johnsen, moderator Cassie Garner & Ceramicist Carter Casmaer. Listening to Rock Johnsen engage with patrons that came to his exhibiting opening left the room with an overall feeling of awe. This will be a limited capacity event and we recommend getting your presale to reserve your seat.

Earth’s Alchemy has turned Gamut Gallery into a transcendent winter-scaped wonderland. Just like no two snowflakes are alike, each piece featured in this exhibit is one of a kind, inspiring us to remember science in everyday life and its inherent influence on societal progress and inclusivity. Rock’s work represents the certainty of constant evolution at an atomic level, the diversity that stems from these atomic interactions, and their eventual influence on our collective appreciation and interest in expressing ourselves through art.

    ARTIST TALK
    Saturday, February 19th, 2022 • 10am

    • 30 person limited capacity event
    FREE pre-sales available and recommended
    • All tickets are will-call at the door
    • Masks required indoors
    • This event is FREE in thanks to the Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board

    MN State Board Art Grant.
Rock Johnsen is a fiscal year 2021 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Rock Johnsen is a scientist and potter living in Minneapolis, MN who grew up in Kansas and Missouri. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Pittsburgh University in studio arts with a focus on ceramics and chemistry. Rock’s work explores concepts of duality that he has been perpetually confronted with growing up as a queer person of mixed race in the United States. He uses human anatomy and creatures to examine our comfort level with functional items and also explores the links between chemistry and geology in ceramic glaze.

His unique crystal growing process is really the recreation of an environment. Rock uses a kiln to simulate the earth’s mantle. Over several hours, between 1800-2200 degrees Fahrenheit, the mixture of basic elements transition to a liquid state. While the vessel’s surface is still fluid, zinc and silica atoms attract one another due to their natural polarities, migrating through the liquid to form larger molecules. With each new piece, Rock mimics environmental conditions by making slight adjustments to the temperature and holding times of the ceramic media; the chemical properties of each element emerge from the crystal solution as the final size, shape, and reflection of each piece becomes an individual representation of material science.

Carter Casmaer is a Doctor by day and ceramicist by night. He first learned ceramics in his hometown of St. Louis and has ten years of experience working with clay. He aims to make beautiful, functional, affordable pieces that are a pleasure to interact with one’s daily life.

Cassie Garner is a graphic designer, art curator, and gallerist living and working in Minneapolis. A founder of Gamut Gallery, Cass began as a graphic designer and has grown with the gallery over time. Three years into business when the gallery was forced to relocate, she joined the ownership team and became the gallery manager where she applied her many years of retail and customer service experience. In the spring of 2018, Cass transitioned into the role of Gallery Director and now leads operations and project management for exhibitions and events. Her other passions include collecting art, dancing, making connections, and spending time in her Southside home.

As a local art gallery & retail space, the holidays are our favorite time of year! Nothing makes us happier than helping our community spread love through the arts. While gatherings and holiday arrangements feels a bit different this year, there is so much magic to be made this season. The event that kicked off Gamut’s inception is back for the 9th year in a row! A holiday shop in a gallery setting, Gamut provides a fun-filled, consumer-conscious alternative to chain stores and mall shopping. Our annual holiday retail shop, Raging Art On (RAO), will feature over a dozen new artists and many others that have been with us from the very beginning.

With the exception of selecting the participants, Gamut leaves the rest up to the local artists. In doing so, they choose their works and the number of pieces they wish to show.  What emerges is a gallery filled with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, jewelry, sculptures, and more! RAO will kick-off with a dedicated members only night on Tuesday, December 1st, followed by 3 weeks of FREE open gallery hours + selected works will remain available online through January 5th.

As we continue to assess the evolving nature of COVID-19, Gamut Gallery will be operating under limited capacity to allow adequate social distancing. Additionally, to ensure everyone has access to a safe holiday shopping experience, patrons may request an appointment. We want our community to know above all, we hear you and we’re here for you. Hesitations towards crowds and anxiety around holiday planning are valid concerns. We will be keeping the gallery clean by actively sanitizing, temperature readings, and enforcing social distancing. We are also happy to announce that we will be providing alternatives to in-person shopping, such as online ordering, curbside pickup, virtual shopping appointments & private shopping sessions.

Selected works featured in RAO will be available on Gamut’s website for those who wish to shop from the comfort of their home beginning Wednesday, December 2nd! Gamut Gallery will also be diligent with Instagram and Facebook live streams during our open hours. Go ahead and wear your pjs while shopping for your holiday essentials!

Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Artworks & gifts are cash-n-carry at our holiday sale, they are handmade locally and are in harmony with those values. The time has come to bid “From Us : Together, Forever, Sometimes” a proper farewell on Wednesday, May 27th 2020. We will be partnering up with the fine folx mplsart to host “Behind the Poster”.  This finale is a long time coming and it feels great to shine a bit more light on this exhibition that was cut short in out brick & mortar last March. We are very proud of all the designers that put their hearts into their works, finding inspiration from the poetry written by Molly-Margaret Johnson and Kareem Rahma. Behind the Poster, a virtual art talk, will showcase several of those designers through candid videos that were self recorded last week.

Learn more about the designers in a series of 3 minute clips as they discuss their selection process in choosing their poem while not knowing if it had been written by Molly-Margaret Johnson and/or Kareem Rahma, their experience interpreting poetry to visual design and what is was like as an artist in this exhibition.

    FROM US: Together Forever Sometimes:
We began with thirty untitled and unauthored poems by Molly-Margaret Johnson & Kareem Rahma. By eliminating titles and byline for each poem, the audience is given an opportunity to connect more viscerally with the work by having to read between the lines without preconceptions of race, gender or sexual orientation. The outcome is an ouroboros of words written by two uniquely different individuals coming together.

Johnson & Rahma’s poetry was then shared with local and national typographers, illustrators and designers who were challenged to conceive a personal rendition of the selected poem of their choice. Through screen print, letterpress, woodblock, hand lettering, and various illustrative elements, they will produce posters that push the viewer’s interpretation, adding yet a third layer of complexity to the written prose.

The culmination of this process extends to those who will visit the gallery to experience From Us. Featuring bold, fluid, high contrast, and vibrant visual representations, the gallery walls will be filled with content that will connect with viewers. We anticipate engaging, perception-bending conversations filled with an appreciation and respect for differences as the outcome.

The event that kicked off Gamut’s inception is back for the 8th year in a row! Bigger & better than previous years, Raging Art On (RAO) holiday shop will be open for 3 weeks, featuring over 20 new artists, and will include a guaranteed party with extended hours. In addition to extended hours, each Saturday evening will spotlight different musical genres, including House, Hip-Hop and Funk. Local DJ’s, 88project & Nancy Cheng, Sammy Figz & Keith Millions, and Bobby Kahn & Dj Dandy will keep you movin’ and groovin’ while exploring the gallery for gifts from over 40 artists.

An “uncurated” holiday makers market in a gallery setting, Raging Art On provides a unique, consumer-conscious experience that allows any adventurous shopper to find the perfect gift for anyone on their shopping list! With the exception of selecting the participants, Gamut leaves the rest up to the local artists to decide the amount of work they show and where to show it. What results is a gallery packed from floor to ceiling with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Gifts for sale at this cash-n-carry event are handmade locally and are in harmony with the values of those concerned by mainstream holiday effects on our environment and our world — landfills, factory and shipping-caused pollution, issues of outsourcing and fair trade, consumer culture, etc. Raging Art On offers a place to join like-minded people together through art, music, and conversation.

  • NuAge Knight: In Between Finale

Comments Off on NuAge Knight: In Between Finale

Gamut Gallery celebrates one more time our latest exhibition “In Between”. For the finale we welcome Gamut first time performer NuAge Knight. Knight’s elevated future dub creates the perfect backdrop to envelope “In Between”.

“In Between” embodies that space between life and death, conscious and subconscious, pen and paper, form and transcendence. This joint exhibit features the art of James Zucco and Kim Heidkamp. Zucco’s work draws on existential questions about life, death, and transcendence. Heidkamp creates fluid paper sculptures that capture movement in a paused moment.

    ABOUT THE ARTISTS
James Zucco spent many years creating award-winning work as an art director in advertising. Three of his commercials are featured in the permanent collection at MoMA, and his work has earned an Emmy nomination and other industry honors. In 2015 James shifted his focus to his passion for fine art. He now spends his days in the studio, drawing and painting across a variety of mediums. His art now resides in private collections across North America, Europe, and the Middle East and has been featured in The New York Times and The California Sunday Magazine.

Kim Heidkamp graduated from the Bethel University. She has a 1 year post-baccalaureate certificate program at Bethel for fine art. After working as a graphic designer for seven years, the urge to create led Heidkamp to abandon her day job and focus on her art. Working out of her studio in the Casket Arts Carriage House, she has dedicated the last two years to developing and honing her paper sculptural works. She has completed several commissions and participates in the annual NEMAA Art-A-Whirl. This is her first major gallery show.

Join artists James Zucco, Kim Heidkamp, and curators Jade Patrick and Cassie Garner for an intimate discussion on Gamut’s current joint exhibition “In Between”. Zucco’s work draws on existential questions about life, death, and transcendence while Heidkamp creates fluid paper sculptures that capture movement in a paused moment.

Writers, Rebels, & Rejects: September 15th – October 13th // Graffiti and street artists will bring beautiful vandalism into the gallery, showing new paintings as well as commissioned street art on miniature 2-D white box trucks and 3-D electrical boxes.

FEATURING: Flora, Sheva, Mavel, Biafra Inc, Wundr, Peak, Cybin, Impeach, Strae, Theory, Black Daze, Sherm, Groe, Value HM, Itse, Max315, Hank, Repo, Luis Fitch, Eric Inkala.

    Curated by Cassie Garner

We have long taken for granted the idea of “property”. There is a clear divide between public and private spaces, and that even in public spaces, the deluge of images and advertisements barraging our senses on billboards and bus stops is legitimate because capital changed hands. We tend to think that money alone buys the right to our vision, but anyone with a sense of disenchantment with the status quo can spark a love affair with “getting up” that can be hard to extinguish.

Writers, Rebels, & Rejects celebrates the street artists and graffiti writers who fill our public sphere with tags, wheatpastes, characters and stickers, bringing them into a gallery setting to focus on the “art” in street art. An eclectic bunch, these artists hail mostly from the Twin Cities, with a few from New York, LA, and Canada: familiar names will be on view like Theory, Wundr, Flora, Sheva, Mavel and Impeach. This group of talented writers, painters, and designers have collectively spent thousands of hours developing their craft on open-world canvases such as railroads, bridges, billboards, and dumpsters using a diverse arsenal of tools ranging from common latex house paint to rattle cans, paint markers to stickers, and mops to fire extinguishers, making work that ranges from simple tags to complex monikers, cute character designs to bold abstract color blocks.

As well as original artworks, artists have been asked to work their magic on one of two dozen miniature white box trucks, one of many blank canvases often found in the wild. Repo, Fitch, and Biafra Inc will also be doing paste ups on 3-D printed faux electrical boxes just for the exhibition. Writers, Rebels, & Rejects brings the outdoors inside and shines light on work usually done in the shadows, giving these subcultural contributions the consideration they deserve.

A holiday sale in a gallery setting, Gamut Gallery provides a fun-filled, consumer-conscious alternative to chain stores and mass mall shopping with the annual shopping event Raging Art On. Described as an “art-happening meets holiday party meets pop-up boutique,” an “uncurated” art experience awaits the adventurous shopper on the hunt for the perfect gift for the artist, musician, writer or other creative maker on their holiday season shopping list. We’ve hand-selected the 50 local artists involved, but they decide what to show and where to show it. What results is a gallery packed from floor to ceiling with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Gifts for sale at this event are handmade locally and are in harmony with the values of those concerned by mainstream holiday effects on our environment and our world — landfills, factory and shipping-caused pollution, issues of outsourcing and fair trade, consumer culture, etc. Raging Art On offers a place to join like-minded people together through art, music, performance and conversation.
