    Isn’t it time to bring the gallery crawl back to Minneapolis? Where people can wander from one gallery to the next, view art that is professionally presented and smartly curated, and meet up with other art enthusiasts? Six galleries across the downtown arts district are working together to make this happen, and bring back this element of a ‘gallery scene’.

    The Exhibitions (by Gallery):

    SooVAC: Black and Yellow. Oregon artist Donald Morgan’s exhibition will combine two complimentary bodies of work. His concepts are generated from reworking narrative elements from books, a loose process of adapting and re-territorializing text into sculptures and paintings.
    + Kulture High, by Kelly O’Brien, explores a tongue-in-cheek examination of how contemporary art and pop culture compete and complement one another.

    Groveland: A summer-long spotlight on local artists takes place in June with two new exhibitions at Groveland Gallery. Pictures from a Trip is a travel-themed exhibition featuring paintings, prints and drawings by 41 gallery artists. Love Letters from Artists, an invitational group show curated by St. Paul architect and artist Peter Kramer, presents over 75 letters from artists across the Twin Cities. Artists were encouraged to “paint, weave, paste, fold and print what’s in their hearts,” promising a unique exhibition that celebrates the tradition of writing and receiving letters.

    Gamut: Middle Class Aspirations features Wundr, Biafra Inc., and Urban Camper in a merging of their media and political activism. Through prints, photography and paintings, the three street artists shine a prudent spotlight on class division, expose inequality and celebrate those who are attempting to rise above hardships and better themselves.

    Instinct: Art On Air. Through the work of seven visual artists, this exhibition is designed to help us appreciate the ubiquitous, essential, invisible ocean of air that we live in. One could experience life in the envelope and hardly give air a second thought. This show is meant to put us consciously in touch with our atmosphere, air quality, the beauty of big skies, the essence of breathing, and the virtue of the invisible.

    Burnet: In ‘sugar sugar’ Ashely Peifer’s deceptively simple, candy-colored abstracts intentionally evoke impressions of simpler times and childlike innocence. Inspired by Mary Heilmann – with suggestions of Lisa Frank, Peifer’s works are intentionally vague, reflecting the emotional nature of nostalgia to distort memory.

    Circa: OMFORME + CIRCA features an eclectic mix of modern and vintage repurposed furniture and accessories, and recent contemporary abstract artwork. The exhibit is a juxtaposition of textures, palettes, inventive materials, and art and design influences.

    Minneapolis – Saturday, April 4th, 2015, 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. – opening for the solo exhibition Erin Sayer: The Tom Robbins Series. Painter, muralist and gallerist Erin Sayer has spent the last decade creating a painting series based on author Tom Robbins’ novels. Inspired by his detailed character descriptions as an art student in 1994, she set out to immortalize the quirky, philosophical, pop-modern enigmas.

    Tom Robbins’ books are set in a Terence McKenna drenched, feminist, post-70s Americana. New-wave social ideals, spirituality, immortality, creativity, and fantastical adventures populate his mystical, psychedelic tales. A central theme is energy, associating existence with the internal divine, alive in us all. Sayer seeks to capture the Tom Robbins essence. Large oil paintings with saturated colors that depict auras, animals, symbology, occurrences and characterizations encompass the 25 original works on display.

    Last summer, Erin Sayer: The Tom Robbins Series premiered in Robbins’ hometown of Seattle at the Quadrupus Artist Exchange Gallery. While in Seattle for the exhibit opening, Sayer painted a mural at The Blue Moon Tavern. The author attended the unveiling, taking home a painting based on the novel “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.” This is the first showing of Sayer’s Tom Robbins retrospective here in Minneapolis.

    Erin Sayer is an all-around creative. From running galleries to traveling the country painting murals, she is constantly engaged in artistic endeavors. Her latest projects include operating Cult Status Gallery, completing several local and national mural projects, painting theatre backdrops, and working on the Tom Robbins Series. Later this year, she is beginning a series of oil paintings based on the book ‘American Gods’ by author Neil Gaiman. She is a freelance curator, having curated over 100 art shows and events over the years. Sayer has owned three galleries since 1998, painted over 50 murals locally and around the US, and her paintings inhabit dozens of private and corporate collections. She is available on commission and is always up for a new travel adventure.

    Minneapolis – Sunday, March 8th, 2015, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. – As part of the exhibition, “Revolution Now: Portraits of Contemporary Female Revolutionaries,” curators Ash Marlene Hane & Angela Sprunger lead a discussion with Robyne Robinson, Drew Peterson, and Joan Vorderbruggen on International Women’s Day.

    How are women changing the world today and what role does art play in it? What does modern feminism really mean, here in America and globally, and how do we define its revolutionaries? The three panelists are set to explore these questions and expand on how we can cultivate radical energy within the art world. Each guest brings to the table personal experience and creative innovation, their vision at the intersection of art and change-making.

    For this event, Gamut Gallery welcomes an intimate and political discussion on how we can (in the words of Maya Angelo) “raise our connective voices, wield our power, influence and combat insecurity in every corner of the world.”

     Robyne Robinson started her career as one of the first African-Americans to anchor a prime-time newscast and quickly became an icon of Twin Cities broadcasting. Her 20 years on air have been filled with numerous honors including the Upper Midwest Emmy for Best Anchor. Robyne has engaged in an active civic life, becoming a Hubert H. Humphrey Public Policy Fellow at the University of Minnesota, as well as sitting on numerous boards and non-profit agencies including A Better Chance Foundation of Eden Prairie and the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota. All the while she has been a steadfast supporter of the arts, playing integral roles in numerous arts organizations and serving on the board of the Walker Arts Center. Her curatorial skills, personal art collection, and her own artwork have been widely celebrated and exhibited. She is also the creator and designer of Rox Minneapolis Jewelry, featured on the Tyra Banks Show and in local and national fashion and lifestyle publications such as Nylon and Mpls-St.Paul Magazine. Now Arts and Culture Director of the Airport Foundation, Robyne is in charge of creating an interactive, cultural experience for travelers and Minnesotans through art and technology at the nation’s 16th busiest airport.

    Drew Peterson is a Twin Cities based multi-disciplinary artist whose studio practice incorporates a wide variety printmaking techniques. Upon completing his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013, Drew has returned to Minneapolis to pursue his career as both artist and teacher. His work has been shown in a recent solo exhibition at The Burnet Gallery in Minneapolis and in a group exhibition at Fernwey Gallery in Chicago. Peterson is an adjunct faculty member in the University of Minnesota’s printmaking department, the lead instructor at Juxtaposition Arts VALT program, and a 2014-15 Jerome resident at Highpoint Center for Printmaking.

    Joan Vorderbruggen is the Cultural District Arts Coordinator for Hennepin Theatre Trust. An artist and organizer, Joan envisions possibilities for the most dejected spaces, transforming vacant storefronts into showcases of MN based creativity. In 2012, she developed and implemented the multiple award winning project, “Artists in Storefronts”, pairing more than 150 artists from 5 to 80 years old to create exhibits of original work in vacant and under-utilized commercial storefronts. In addition to creating a temporary, pop-up urban walking gallery, her project commissioned six permanent murals, hosted dozens of community events, tours, festivals, and over 50 live performances in alternative spaces. In just eight months of participation, eight properties with a combined vacancy of more than 20 years acquired short-and long-term lease agreements. She currently serves as the Cultural District Arts Coordinator for Hennepin Theatre Trust activating the downtown Minneapolis Cultural District with the project Made Here. Joan continues to be a visionary source of creative urban revitalization that connects and celebrates diverse cultural landscape.

    Minneapolis – Saturday, February 28th 2015, 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. – opening for the print invitational, Revolution Now, curated by Ash Marlene Hane and Angela Sprunger. This exhibition is poised to acknowledge women who are creating change, locally or globally, known to many or known to a few. Their revolutions may be large and loud or slow and quiet, but their fight is now.

    Curators Hane and Sprunger have invited fourteen artists, including themselves, to create new work for this show. This divergent group of printmakers have each selected a woman to represent based on their own ideas of what revolution is. Working in a variety of print media – including monoprint, relief and silkscreen – each artist will interpret the “portrait” in a way that best suits their talents and style. Printmakers have long been at the forefront of revolution, helping to boldly bring the voice of the people to the greater public. The resulting collection of prints will introduce viewers to women from all over the world and in doing so encourage new dialogue and understanding.

    Ash Marlene Hane is a printmaker, the creator of Three Letter Acronym (TLA) press, and a founding member of The Midnight Brigade. Her print work questions ideas of control, vulnerability and expectation with a focus on interpreting the figure through hand-drawn and photographic elements. In 2013, Hane received a Minnesota State Arts Board Next Step Fund Grant and launched a screenprinted apparel line through her press, Three Letter Acronym. In 2014, she co-founded The Midnight Brigade, a gallery, clothing boutique, and art studio in South Minneapolis.

    Angela Sprunger is an artist, educator, and administrator. She creates socially engaged prints and objects to agitate cultural complacency. In the past year, Sprunger complete a public art project through Corridor Collaboration Grant from the City of Saint Paul and had a solo show of print work at Franklin Arts Center Resident Artist Gallery. She is also part of the Art Swap team, a portable community event that invites participants to bring a work of art they made to exchange for a piece in Art Swap’s rotating collection.

    Minneapolis – Saturday, January 24, 2015, 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. – opening for the collaborative, multi-media exhibit Common Oasis. Installation artist Rachel Andrzejewski and painter Krista Braam create space to soothe the winter-weary soul with vibrant color and immersive wonderment. Together they transform Gamut Gallery into hallowed ground, offering those of varying devotional backgrounds a common area for reverence and joyful refuge. Andrzejewski’s large-scale response to Braam’s vivid works becomes a shrine to being deeply present in the moment. Their carefully assembled environment employs sacred symbols from diverse origins to spur interaction, as gallery visitors choose an image to add to a fiber and wood tree installation. The meticulously selected branches are adorned with brightly colored yarn woven throughout the exhibit, leading the viewer into face-to-face moments with found object assemblages and Braam’s concentrated pieces.

    Braam paints with gouache, similar to watercolor but with opacity. She works quickly, combining her technical training with an unrestrained process that adds a vibrating energy to her paintings. Her small-scale works evidence a life being fully lived and enjoyed. She encapsulates moments of serenity that might otherwise slip away, creating permanence for joy despite life’s struggles and inevitable end. In response to Andrzejewski’s concepts, some symbolic imagery has found its way into Braam’s new series. She also takes her detailed work to a larger scale and ventures into the third dimension.

    Andrzejewski’s installation is designed as an antidote for lonely hearts or anyone struggling to find connectivity amid daily challenges. She hand-carves stamps to print the varied spiritual symbols, which are selected based on “human spirituality, not necessarily religious, but based on things that draw people together.” Every salvaged branch and potent object is repurposed with intent to give new life to things that resonate as precious to her. While each artist approaches the exhibit from their own unique point of view, their collaboration invokes a strong synergy, allowing for personal reflection. The overall effect is an oasis of warmth and hope at this stark time of year, when it is needed most.

    Rachel Andrzejewski is a sculptor/ installation artist; she often incorporates bookmaking, printmaking, drawing, writing, lighting and interactive elements into her designs. In 2014, she exhibited with her collaborative installation art studio “1/3 Space.” In 2013, she created a blog/ installation/ community presentation project: Entangled/Untangled, with fellow 1/3 Space founder Victoria Carpenter, at the invitation of MN NISE. Prior to this, the pair had lead a collaborative of thirteen artists, the “Friemily,” curating two exhibitions. In 2010, Andrzejewski graduated from Bethel University with a studio art degree, and exhibited in several group shows. She has exhibited nationally and has had various internships and residencies, including a semester long immersion in New York city at the New York Center for Art and Media Studies.

    Krista Braam is a painter/ visual artist. Her work is a display of everything she finds fantastic about the world around us, while tying in elements of fiction to create imaginative scenarios. From a young age she was taught the trade of fiber arts from her mother, Lorie, which has found expression in her recent explorations into installation art. She has a 2012 degree in illustration from the College of Visual Arts, where she took part in a variety of group exhibitions and interned with In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre in South Minneapolis.

    The 4th annual exhibit of Target Team Member art work, Curative, is happening this year at Gamut Gallery, and we couldn’t be more excited about the union! Curative is an art exhibition of work by Target Team Members that celebrates the creative talents for those in both creative and non-creative departments. This event is all about the work and love that people take the time to create outside of Target’s walls.

    This year’s exhibit is juried by the lovely folks at Juxtaposition Arts, the community-based education, entrepreneurship, and professional development organization designed for young artists. A “real time”- inspired exhibition, the event will display art as it’s created via live screen printing by JXTA based off of the branding they have created for Curative.

    On top of its partnership with JXTA, the event will feature delicious food, DJ-spun tunes, and libations, all for your art viewing pleasure. The exhibit will last only three days – opening reception on Wednesday, October 15th from 5-8 pm with additional open gallery hours on Thursday, October 16th from 12-4 pm and Friday, October 17th from noon-4 pm.

    Come be a part of a different kind of social experience. Display art as it’s created. Share photos as they’re taken. Live and share in the moment.

    Minneapolis – Friday, October 24, 2014, 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. – opening reception for Gamut Gallery’s third annual “C4W: Call 4 Works” juried art exhibition. The show features work from twenty-three regional and international artists; it runs through November 22. Kristoffer Knutson curates the exhibit, focusing a contemporary curator’s eye to the diverse array of submissions.

    Knutson has built experience promoting and engaging artistic communities in Minneapolis while running the design store “ROBOTlove” from 2005-2012 as well as through his partnership in the local arts calendar mplsart.com. This will be his first experience as the sole juror of an open call for works. He describes the process as challenging given the breadth of media, content, and artistry of the submissions – but this variety is exactly what Gamut was hoping for as a reflection of their mission. He invites those familiar with his place in the Twin Cities art community to view the show as something “they might not expect to see” from him. Knutson selected finalists whose submitted work shared a common thread – identity and the projection of self – along with a number of pieces that offer moments of inner reflection. Through the curation of this exhibit he explores a two-fold reality where our projected identity and experience perhaps differ from an outsider’s perspective.

    This is the first collaboration between Knutson and Gamut Gallery — a gallery he describes as “young, open and relevant, the kind of place where accessible art can be fostered.” Gallery director Jade Patrick has a parallel affinity for Knutson’s contribution towards expanding a market for and knowledge of Minneapolis’ street and poster art scenes.

    Minneapolis     – Saturday September 6, 2014, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. CHIDO: a collaboration between photographer Serene Supreme & mixed media artist Ramses Alarcon. Together they bring out the inner cool or “chido” of the first forty respondents to Serene’s open call for models. Her signature Polaroid portraits were enlarged and printed, then directly drawn and painted upon by Ramses. With a commitment to showing the select shot for every volunteer-model and every drop of ink and paint applied by Ramses, the series catalogs an unfiltered exploration of how different “cool” can be from one person to another.

    Minneapolis – Friday June 20, 2014, 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. – opening night reception for Gamut Gallery’s “Post Mo’ Bills;” the exhibition runs through July 16. Gamut Gallery will be transformed into a graphic communications hub through the display of editioned screen prints by many of the Twin Cities’ finest poster designers.

    Sometimes the easiest way to advertise a garage sale or a concert is to staple flyers to telephone poles. But in many U.S. cities, it is illegal to post handbills on public or private property. These local ordinances are similar to anti-graffiti laws. Wheat pasting posters is considered vandalism. Property owners complain that flyers look “messy.” And yet, our visual landscape is already cluttered with corporate advertisements on billboards and bus shelters. If grassroots flyering is forbidden by law, how is someone supposed to find their lost cat? How should political activists communicate their messages supporting social change? Where is the place for artists’ expression in the public space?

    From the psychedelic animal art of Chuck U, to the politically-charged prints of alternative arts veteran Ruthann Godollei, “Post Mo’ Bills” is a feast for the eyes. The interior of the gallery will feel urban, with a wall designed to resemble the multiple layers of overlapping handbills and postcards found on outdoor notice boards. Visitors to the gallery are encouraged to add their own messages to the existing flyers on the bulletin board. This will be a participatory exhibit, one that challenges civil authorities warnings to “post no bills.”
