    Our annual Call-4-Work exhibition is not a show that influences what art should be. Instead, the chosen guest curator brings their unique perspective and interpretation of the submitted works ranging the full “Gamut” of visual media. When Cándida González accepted the invite to curate this year’s C4W:2021, they went in as a blank canvas and let the artwork choose them, empowering the 197 artists to lead the way through all 836 submissions.Through our guest curator’s lens and perspective, this body of work presented the theme Elemental.

    This year’s group exhibit will feature 43 artworks that Cándida has chosen to represent one of the foundational blocks of life, from the classical elements and human connections to life and death. The roots of all existing matter – earth, air, water and fire – are essential principles of life, each possessing an energy that when summoned has the power to ground us and heal during times of turmoil. For Cándida, these selected works embody a form of elemental energy that invites us to drop down from the chaos into the essential foundation of existence as life twists & changes around us. These artworks all create roots in the state of being that we return to inorder to help us make sense of the confusion.

    Returning this year, there will be two “Best in Show ” awards. One will be selected by the guest curator and the other by opening night attendees.     C4W guest curator, Cándida González, and Gamut Gallery’s director, Cassie Garner, sit down for a conversation with selected C4W artists to share about their processes, ideations and perspectives on current events.

    ABOUT THE CURATOR
    Cándida González is a queer, non-binary Puerto Rican native of South Minneapolis, they studied Latin American Art and History at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, and went on to get their M.Ed. at The University of Minnesota in 2003. In their 15 years of arts education work in Minneapolis they worked on building art programs that focused on equitable arts opportunities, inclusivity of underserved populations, and deeper, culturally relevant arts experiences for youth and communities of color. Through their work they have also focused on providing opportunities and development for emerging artists of color. They approach their work by centering at the intersection of art, activism, healing and personal/community empowerment. They are deeply invested in the concept of using art and community design as tools to wage love and healing. Currently Gonzalez facilitates nationwide the Making it Public workshop series for Forecast Public Art, participates in select local arts and healing initiatives and creates mixed-media jewelry under the name Las Ranas Jewelry.

    For the closing reception of photography series, Creative Combustion, we welcome back the genre-obliterating project, Genrebeast for its second to last performance on the Gamut stage. Featuring the heady, heavy, angular rock of Qaanaaq, Genrebeast 4 marks the CD release party for “Separate / Weak.” Qaanaaq (kuh-nAHk) is the charismatic union of former Hot Ashes musicians Steve Jaksa – Bass, Ray Minge – Violin, and Gus Watkins – Guitar, Vocals, with the addition of Deephaven and Hello Blue’s Ben Prohaska – Drums. Their first single “Skeleton” took a stark look at addiction, and the forces that compel people to abuse their bodies in an attempt to fix their minds. Their live performance is sure to invoke a dynamic energy that mirrors the collaborative combustion of Gamut’s current exhibit. http://qaanaaq.band/

    The event will include performances by funk, love, soul band Jaedyn James & The Hunger and rock singer/songwriter Courtney Yasmineh, plus live soundscapes between acts by Peter Bregman, Adam Biel, Ficshe, Chrysanthemum, Charlie Milkey, Adriatic, Jada Brown.

    For the photojournalistic group exhibition, #CreativeCombustion, Natarius selected 18 creative makers representing a wide array of media and followed them to their place of inspiration, be it a physical atmosphere or an emotive memory. Documenting the experience through 35mm film and in-depth interviews, Natarius and his team of photographers and journalists hand-printed and compiled a photo essay exploring the source of creativity. Featuring photographers, musicians, aerial performers, master brewers, tattoo artists, curators, dancers, installation artists, and mixed media artists, the final project is a compelling visual photography series depicting talent and energy which offers an accompanying art book with pages of expose on the psychology of the art and the story behind their impulse to create.

    In every artist, there is an impetus to create; it starts with a spark. While most of us are only privy to the final product, local photographer, Ilya Natarius wants the audience to be frozen within the illumination of that original vision.

    For the photojournalistic group exhibition, Creative Combustion, Natarius selected 18 creative makers representing a wide array of media and followed them to their place of inspiration, be it a physical atmosphere or an emotive memory. Documenting the experience through 35mm film and in-depth interviews, Natarius and his team of photographers and journalists hand-printed and compiled a photo essay exploring the source of creativity. Featuring photographers, musicians, aerial performers, master brewers, tattoo artists, curators, dancers, installation artists, and mixed media artists, the final project is a compelling visual photography series depicting talent and energy which offers an accompanying art book with pages of expose on the psychology of the art and the story behind their impulse to create.

    Relying on the photojournalist credo of “realistic imagery,” Natarius’ work authentically allows the viewer to experience the “aura” of the subject photographed, an element often lost in the era of digital embellishment. By stepping away from photo manipulation, Natarius returns to what is rawest and truest in storytelling through images.

    A departure from his previous personal photography work, which focused more on observing spatial environments, Creative Combustion is a mini drama of enfolding intersections and human connection. Each image projects the skill and confidence of the featured creatives while discussing the ingredients that come together to ignite their individual creative spark.

    ABOUT THE ARTIST:
    Ilya Natarius is a photographer, videographer, and engineer living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Being active in the creative world for the past nine years and passionate about storytelling through the lens, Ilya has worked with a number of organizations such as the University of St. Thomas, Face Forward MN, and Infinitree Media to produce content for a wide range of clients that includes Summer Set Music Festival, Project Earth Festival, The Ivey Awards, and various musicians and performing artists throughout Minnesota. Ilya’s real passion lies in the world of analog photography and printmaking, where he can explore different subject matter outside of the confines of the professional world. During the day, Ilya is a full-time engineer working in high-tech storage.

    ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS:
    Rita Kovtun is a writer, photographer, and multimedia storyteller. She aims to craft written and visual stories that shift perspectives and center on a shared human experience. Rita has worked in news, magazines, and art and cultural nonprofit organizations, producing stories and content for MinnPost, thirty two magazine, The Riveter magazine, Face Forward MN, the University of St. Thomas, the Minnesota Historical Society, and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, as well as individual artists in the Twin Cities. Born in Russia, raised in the United States, and having spent time studying French in Paris and working at a chocolate and permaculture farm in Costa Rica, Rita brings a global perspective to her work and a desire to create positive social change.

    Nadia Honary considers herself a video artist. She has been doing multimedia production work of varying degrees for over ten years. Passionate about sharing stories through video, she has collaborated with and produced videos and photos for several nonprofit organizations and groups nationally and internationally, as well as with artists of various disciplines. Her experimental films have been featured locally at the Southern Theater and the Gamut Gallery. At present her work explores themes in identity and gender. She is producing an installation piece to be featured at the Pillsbury House Theatre in December. Nadia is working full-time for the local public access television station St. Paul Neighborhood Network teaching adults and youth techniques in video production.

    Marcos Juarez-Gosselin has always used his media to inspire. Believing that a community effort is the main ingredient to positive social change, Marcos has set a goal to collaborate with businesses and artists that possess the same objective. As cofounder of Infinitree Media, Marcos focuses on engagement; whether personally or through media, he aims to create pieces or host events that allow space for conversations based around working together. Some sustainable partners of Infinitree Media include Paisley Park Enterprise, MJG Productions, Massive Amounts of Good, and the Farm Journal Foundation. By creating media with a purpose, Marcos wishes to serve a more supportive, aware, and socially engaged community.

    A genre obliterating project from local musician, Gus Watkins, Genrebeast is a visceral art/sound experience that puts Gamut at the epicenter of a 6-month-long music residency. Genrebeast features five album releases from five contradistinctive bands to coincide with five exhibit finales. Gamut is proud to host an exclusive event that merges an audience of art and music lovers alike for a sensory extravaganza.

    With five wildly different, diverse-sounding projects, Watkins and his varied set of kindred musicians conceptualize and compose music meant to be explored as an art form, creating  without being overly concerned by labels or pigeon-holed by a ubiquitous sound. From its inception in 2011 as a musical showcase pitting incongruous bands together on one bill, Genrebeast has worked to rid the notion of music having to appeal to a specific scene to be fully appreciated. Evolving into a five-band-project led by Watkins, Genrebeast exists to unite the local music scene and expand tastes through musical eclecticism.

    Inciting people to approach the music from an experiential format, Watkin’s residency acts as a catalyst for shedding an antiquated idea of music consumption. By bringing the artistry to the forefront and moving the performance to a gallery atmosphere where absorbing art is already the construct, Genrebeast reclaims the emotive intent and organic element music has often lost by simply being background noise in a bar setting. Through this shift in focus, Genrebeast sets out to build a community, not just a scene, through collaborative performance.
