As a local art gallery & retail space, the holidays are our favorite time of year! Nothing makes us happier than helping our community spread love through the arts. While gatherings and holiday arrangements feels a bit different this year, there is so much magic to be made this season. The event that kicked off Gamut’s inception is back for the 9th year in a row! A holiday shop in a gallery setting, Gamut provides a fun-filled, consumer-conscious alternative to chain stores and mall shopping. Our annual holiday retail shop, Raging Art On (RAO), will feature over a dozen new artists and many others that have been with us from the very beginning.

With the exception of selecting the participants, Gamut leaves the rest up to the local artists. In doing so, they choose their works and the number of pieces they wish to show.  What emerges is a gallery filled with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, jewelry, sculptures, and more! RAO will kick-off with a dedicated members only night on Tuesday, December 1st, followed by 3 weeks of FREE open gallery hours + selected works will remain available online through January 5th.

As we continue to assess the evolving nature of COVID-19, Gamut Gallery will be operating under limited capacity to allow adequate social distancing. Additionally, to ensure everyone has access to a safe holiday shopping experience, patrons may request an appointment. We want our community to know above all, we hear you and we’re here for you. Hesitations towards crowds and anxiety around holiday planning are valid concerns. We will be keeping the gallery clean by actively sanitizing, temperature readings, and enforcing social distancing. We are also happy to announce that we will be providing alternatives to in-person shopping, such as online ordering, curbside pickup, virtual shopping appointments & private shopping sessions.

Selected works featured in RAO will be available on Gamut’s website for those who wish to shop from the comfort of their home beginning Wednesday, December 2nd! Gamut Gallery will also be diligent with Instagram and Facebook live streams during our open hours. Go ahead and wear your pjs while shopping for your holiday essentials!

Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Artworks & gifts are cash-n-carry at our holiday sale, they are handmade locally and are in harmony with those values. In 2020, more than ever, let our artists be your elves and continue to support our vibrant community of local artists and makers.

FEATURED ARTISTS: Benja Wuest, Blaine Garrett, Brook Thompson, CL Martin, Cory Favre, Dani Frame, Drake Johnson, Erik Tiberius Lervold, Jacob Eidem, James Kloiber, Jeff Bockenhauer, Jesse Golfis, Jesse Quam, Joe Rheault, Kurtis Johnson, Leslie Barlow, Mark Dean, Matt Ihle, Russ White, Sean Lynch

In A Gallery Far, Far Away… presents a celebration of Star Wars, paying homage to the franchise while including a variety of artists from different backgrounds working in various media, showcasing that Star Wars is not defined by George Lucas or Disney, but belongs to the fans. This exhibit will be on display for three days only with free viewing during our regular weekly hours (Thur-Sat 1-7pm), and will culminate with a proper party Saturday, December 16th, 7-11pm ($5 entry or free with gallery membership). The party will feature a live orchestral performance of the Star Wars theme song in addition to other inspired improvisations by Adam Conrad’s Improvestra. The Headspace Collective will bring us back to the times of the original Star Wars release by spinning late 70’s era disco, and Andy Fitton will contribute a space-inspired ambient DJ set to the festivities. Star Wars costumes are strongly encouraged.

Whether you love it or hate it, Star Wars has been an influence on your life. Marking its 40th anniversary this year, spanning a multitude of media and connecting generations, the Star Wars franchise is pervasive to modern life. Even if you haven’t seen the films, countless musicians, artists, filmmakers and more have been shaped by the Star Wars-verse, the extensive range of products that have helped bring “nerd” culture into the mainstream. The eighth installment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15th, and Gamut’s original crew members Mark Dean and Kurtis “Kujo” Johnson thought it fitting to present a Minneapolis artists’ ode to Star Wars: In A Gallery Far, Far Away…

ABOUT THE CURATORS: The two curators came to Star Wars in different ways; Dean a die-hard fan from childhood, and Kujo more recently found affinity by watching the series with his son. The concept behind the exhibit is driven by Star Wars fandom. The curators are even planning to recreate a child’s bedroom, complete with posters, comics, and action figures. The exhibit was invitational at first, but as word spread about the show, Dean and Kujo decided to put out a call for submissions, recognizing that there are so many unique styles pushing the envelope in exciting and innovative ways. The artists were asked not only to think about the impact of Star Wars on their lives, but also to think about the larger galaxy and cosmos to gain inspiration for their works. Not limited to branded franchise imagery, artists were encouraged to explore Star Wars world phenomenon, inspiring a wide variety of works that collectively create an environment rich in imagination.

    PARTY NIGHT:
    Saturday December 16th // 7-11pm
    $5 or FREE w/membership
Costumes encouraged + live music from Andy Fitton, Improvestra & The Headspace Collective

    FREE OPEN HOURS:
    Thursday December 14th // 1-7PM

  8. C4W: 2016 Exhibit Finale Featuring ARIADNE

Comments Off on C4W: 2016 Exhibit Finale Featuring ARIADNE

    InvitedV1

C4W: 2016 Exhibit Finale featuring ARIADNE – closing reception of Gamut Gallery’s annual “C4W: Call 4 Works” exhibition curated by Lindsay Nohl, featuring a cross-venue premiere of Sean Connaughty’s short film “Is This Your’s?”; and a live performance from touring A/V duo ARIADNE, with an opening set from Michael Masaru Flora.

For the closing reception of C4W: 2016, the gallery welcomes a special performance from ARIADNE, on tour as part of their ongoing “Observance” multimedia performance series, which was premiered at the 2016 CURRENTS New Media Festival in Santa Fe, NM in June. An A/V experimental sacred music duo from Brooklyn, New York, ARIADNE is comprised of Christine Lanx and Benjamin Forest. Incorporating modern chant-like vocalises, Anglican choral textures, and percussive soundscapes in dense multi-sensory layers, the duo flawlessly bridge the two worlds of ritualism of ancient spirituality and the secular iconography of the post-modern. Through their intricate musical compositions, striking digital visuals, ARIADNE create a captivating live performance.

Observance is an audio/visual performance that draws from themes of ecstatic visions, the eternal feminine and dream symbolism depicted in a digital landscape of infinite environments and harsh textures. The performance system developed by ARIADNE for Observance explores the improvisatory interplay of music and visuals mediated by machine learning, physics simulation and motion analysis techniques.

The evening will also feature the premiere of “Is This Yours?,” a short video piece from local artist Sean Connaughty that will be simultaneously released that night at 15 different venues in Minneapolis. Connaughty has been been working on a large environmental art project that is cleaning up Lake Hiawatha. The larger story is that he’s discovered that massive amounts of trash go down the storm sewers all over the city and end up in our lakes and the river. With installations at the Weisman and Form + Content gallery recently in conjunction with this project and several local and national press write-ups, this artful video is the perfect storytelling companion piece.

Finally, this event will be the last chance to view “C4W: 2016” at Gamut Gallery. The exhibition features work from twenty-four artists out of a diverse pool of submissions. Hailing from a background of illustration and design, choosing work that communicated well was a top priority for guest curator Lindsay Nohl. The artists selected for the show represent confident creators whose artistic voices were strong, vibrant and intentional in the way they handled their media and craftsmanship. The exhibit highlights the concepts of readability and response, examining the mindset that you cannot separate the choices an artist makes in their approach to a piece from the final product. It’s all part of the work.

ARIADNE is an A/V experimental sacred music duo from Brooklyn, New York comprised of Christine Lanx and Benjamin Forest. For Gamut Gallery’s fourth annual “C4W: Call 4 Works” juried art exhibition, LGAL gallery founder and artist Lindsay Nohl has selected artwork from twenty-four artists out of a diverse pool of submissions. Hailing from a background of illustration and design, choosing work that communicated well was a top priority. The artists selected for the show represent confident creators whose artistic voices were strong, vibrant and intentional in the way they handled their media and craftsmanship.

Though no theme is required in the original submission guidelines, each C4W curator has brought to the table their own unique perspective of and interpretation to the submitted works. This personalized stamp establishes an underlying theme or recurring motif that is a connective thread weaving together the exhibition. Throughout the selection process, Nohl was drawn to the elements of intention and communication, which can be seen in the clear and clever representation of emotions, stories and moments in the final chosen body of work. In each piece, the viewer can sense the personal behind the presented.

“There’s always something very revealing about a personal body of work — it’s a self portrait without being a self portrait,” Nohl said about her selection. “Each work speaks volumes of the creator’s intentions, and their thoughtfulness in the execution of their themes. This body of work is a mix of very representational works amongst stylized illustrative work, and abstract pieces with collage and photography. I believe the works chosen are both strong pieces alone and within the context of the group exhibition.”

Join us for an exhibit that highlights the concepts of readability and response, examining the mindset that you cannot separate the choices an artist makes in their approach to a piece from the final product. It’s all part of the work.

    GAMUT_BDAY_FB

For the past four years, Gamut has proudly shared a birthday alongside the vibrant energy that Northern Spark lends the city. Although we are not officially part of this year’s festival, we have a few things up our sleeves to join in the revelry. If you’ve celebrated with us in the past, you know how lively our parties can get. For this year’s birthday, Gamut’s walls will be filed with bewitching art from Ineffable, a collaborative exhibition of mixed media and photography between artist Ramses Alarcon Sanchez and 11 local photographers. The artwork examines perception and explores the transcendental.

We welcome back the genre-obliterating project, Genrebeast for their second CD release party featuring the sophisticated, cinematic electronica sounds of duo KPT and Gus Watkins DEATHDANCE. Genrebeast is a visceral art/sound experience that puts Gamut Gallery at the epicenter of a 6-month-long music residency and features five album releases from five contradistinctive bands to coincide with five exhibition finales. Gamut is proud to host this series that merges an audience of art and music lovers alike for sensory exploration.

Music will continue into the night with sets from rap act RP HOOKS, deep house and techno from Berndt & Ryote of Kajunga Records, and soulful grunge-folk from Half Tramp. Plus, a live performance piece meets acoustic act from our friends Qassandra & Apollo, comedy courtesy of the new cable access show  “And Now It’s”, and a live VJ feed from Omen projected onto our backyard patio. Also, because Gamut just loves to ‘go out on a limb,’ we’ll be showcasing an experimental twist on live body painting – live mannequin painting. We’ve invited some of our favorite local artists (including Repo, Erin Sayer, Greta Claire, Benjamin Wuest, Jacob Eidem, Alex Gregory and more) to dissemble mannequins and paint/draw/embellish their signature styles onto a limb/body part. At the end of the night, the adorned limbs will sold as memorandums in an auction to support future programming at Gamut Gallery.

Come for the art and music, stay for the party and help us raise a toast to thank the local art community for four fantastic years of continued support and for letting us be the innovative, aberrant gallery that we are.

A holiday sale in a gallery setting, Gamut Gallery provides a fun-filled, consumer conscious alternative to chain stores and mass mall shopping with the 5th annual shopping event, Raging Art On. Described as an “art-happening meets holiday-party meets pop-up boutique,” an “uncurated” art experience awaits the adventurous shopper on the hunt for the perfect gift for the artist, musician, writer or other creative maker on their holiday season shopping list. This year, Gamut has extended the annual sale to include an additional two days, which means extra hours of epic rummaging and, of course, more time to enjoy the party. We’ve hand-selected the 30+ local artists involved, but they decide what to show and where to show it. What results is a gallery packed from floor to ceiling with paintings, photography, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

Sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon and hosted at our new location in Elliot Park, the four-day-long event will see performances from DJs Just Nine, James Patrick, Aaron Brooks, Ken Hannigan and Juleana Enright, plus fire spinning in our courtyard by Lotus Fire (weather permitting), refreshments, and additional pop-up surprises. Come for the art; stay for the party.

Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Gifts for sale at this event are handmade locally and are in harmony with the values of those concerned by mainstream holiday effects on our environment and our world — landfills, factory and shipping-caused pollution, issues of outsourcing and fair trade, consumer culture, etc. Raging Art On offers a place to join like-minded people together through art, music, performance and conversation.
