    This Spring, Gamut Gallery is kicking off the new ownership team’s inaugural exhibition.

    To kick off the 2024 calendar year, Gamut Gallery’s new Director, Francesca Bernardi, partnered with Gamut’s former director, Cass Garner, to create the collaborative exhibition, Coalescence. To bring this conception to fruition this duo requested artist suggestions from the new ownership team, Francesca Bernardi, Kasi Aten, and Brian Oreck along with the co-founders of Gamut, Cass Garner Jade and James Patrick. As the new ownership team is transitioning into their roles, it was essential for them to connect with the community that has been part of Gamut’s roots.

    The curators combed through all the suggestions to pull the most cohesive artists together who represent each owner and co-founder. Cass and Francesca are very excited to welcome back Briana Auel, Evan Weselmann, Kim Heidkamp, John Foster, Jessica Kitzman, Laurie Borggreve, Madison Rubenstein, Nelson Cain, seangarrison, Suyao Tian, and Rock Johnsen – 11 artists who have been part of Gamut’s story over the past 5 years. 

    Together, this roster of abstract artists was formed to bring a vivid multi-media exhibition that embraces the accessibility of Gamut featuring paintings, sculpture, and fiber art available at all price points and sizes. Many of the artists are creating works in the styles they are currently known for while incorporating nods to their past works that started their careers. This exhibition is guaranteed to give you the feels!

    ABOUT THE CURATORS
    Cass Garner     is a graphic designer, art curator, project manager and working in Minneapolis. She co-founded Gamut Gallery, a cultural hub in Minneapolis over the past 12 years promoting the arts in Minneapolis and beyond. Cass led operations and project management for exhibitions and events while she was the Director until February of this year. She has curated dozens of exhibits within Gamut’s walls. In 2018 Cass was the solo Juror of Artistry’s 42nd Annual Members’ Juried Art Exhibition. Her curatorial practice expanded in 2020 partnering with The Coven at their St. Paul location to curate a special nook of the Coven, and she partnered with HAUS Salon in 2021 to highlight local, innovative artists from the Twin Cities producing 25 solo exhibits throughout the HAUS Salons across Minneapolis. Most recently Cass was the Project Manager for the Holidays on Nicollet and a juror for Hennepin Theatre Trust It’s the People Project.

    Francesca Bernardi is the new Gallery Director and co-owner of Gamut Gallery. They are an art therapist, artist, art collector, and burgeoning curator. Through their work in art therapy, they are a skilled relationship cultivator, attentive communicator, and passionate about building community with multifaceted individuals. Coalescence is Francesca’s gallery curatorial debut however, they have hosted pop-up art galleries in their home featuring local artists. Francesca’s excitement for curating will lead to many more exhibits highlighting artists in Minneapolis.

    Gamut Gallery has thoroughly enjoyed a decade of art, music, performance, and collaborations! From our first location in the Handicraft Building to our current home in Elliot Park, the relationship that continues to define our space is the one we share with you every day. As we look forward to another year together, we invite you to join us in celebrating ten years by attending our first summer exhibition of the year: Art is for Everyone!

    As the gallery evolves from one show to the next, the heart of Gamut’s mission remains the same: we believe that art fosters community, and everyone should have access to becoming a collector! In honor of our tenth anniversary, ten of our supporters, from dabblers to devotees, have graciously agreed to lend us one of the pieces that first caught their eyes and captured their hearts. The loaned work will be displayed in tandem with new, original pieces by the corresponding artists. Gamut is delighted to welcome back artists Ash Hane, Barret Lee, Bunny Portia, James Zucco, John Foster, Kristi Abbott, Rodrigo Oñate, Lora Hlavsa, Urban Camper, and 2Mil for this group exhibit. As a special compliment to the month-long retrospective display, portraits captured within the homes of the featured collectors will be on view along with a few words of their own stories that embody Gamut’s mission of bridging artists and their communities to life!

    Featured Artist Bios:

    Aldair Dosmil is a Mexican street artist, born in Morelia, Michoacán. He has dedicated his work to the appropriation of urban spaces with murals since 2015. With a varied and eclectic style, he represents through Mexican folklore an iconic character of his work, a personal reinterpretation of the torito de petate dance, one of the most traditional emblems of Morelia.

    Ash Marlene Hane can be found wandering amongst the myths and the stars, greeting the spirits of the animate cosmos, and dancing amongst the northern forests. A student of  *the way of things* she is in tutelage with the Great Mystery and a devotee of the Jovian path. Her current body of work is an intuitive collaboration with Creator, inviting re-enchantment and magic into the eye and heart of the beholder. Ash studied Printmaking and Art history at the U of M and MCAD, co-owner of the former Midnight Brigade Gallery, and creator of TLA Press. Ash Marlene Hane has shown at numerous galleries and is the recipient of an MRAC Next Step Grant. Her practice centers around an ethic of experimentation and is in collaboration with the Nymphs and Muses of creation.

    Barret Lee is a Minnesota-based fine artist and illustrator with a BA in drawing and painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) in 2016. Barret is a multidisciplinary artist who works in a range of mediums. He paints a wide variety of subjects, including wide-eyed characters, playful landscapes, and pop culture. 

    As a representational feminist artist working in oils, encaustic, pencil, and video, Bunny Portia examines issues of aging, change, and traditional ideals of female beauty. Her work is based on personal experience and incorporates a retrospective view from her 70-year vantage point. Fifty years ago, Bunny Portia spent the summer of her sophomore year in college stuffed into an impossibly tight-fitting, padded costume, serving drinks and meals to customers who bought into the Playboy myth. Using that experience juxtaposed to her image today, she explores age bias and her experience growing old. Her large Memento Mori skeleton paintings made their debut at Gamut Gallery in 2017.

    James Zucco spent many years creating award-winning work as an art director in advertising.In 2015, he shifted his focus to fine art. His work resides in private collections around the world and was recently featured in New American Paintings. James has also created illustrations for clients including The New York Times, New York Magazine, and Mother Jones.

    Manipulating time and light, John Foster is creating works of art that evoke a visceral response. Through a radical synthesis of poetry and engineering, highly technical feats of geometry leave us with objects that do not appear to have passed through the artist’s hands. Foster draws on sacred geometry to provide the base parameters for an experience that grips viewers, drawing them into the moment with a kaleidoscopic play of color, texture, and rhythm. Colors dance and transform as the eye moves from one perspective to another, generating iridescent figures that metamorphize as viewers move around them.

    Kristi Abbott is an Australian multimedia collage artist. Kristi spent 8 years growing her art business in Minnesota, having her own gallery in downtown Minneapolis for 3 years. She has won several awards and public commissions and her work is collected across the US and Australia. As a collage artist Kristi is fascinated with the use of color, pattern, and texture. She combines these elements in her work in an innovative and exciting way using a combination of papers, paints, and other embellishment materials. Each piece and series is thoughtfully researched and conceptualized to tell a story through the use of familiar imagery richly layered throughout each artwork. She describes her amazing and innovative methods as “painting with paper”. After a year-long art residency in Texas, she has returned to Minnesota, where she looks forward to adding artworks to the previous series as well as creating completely new series and artworks inspired by her life and travels.  

    Lora Hlavsa is a self-described “professional dabbler”. Professionally, she solves creative problems as an art director and designer, but her personal fine art and illustration practice reveals an unconstrained world of color and energy. Inspired by femininity, pop culture, nature, and intersectionality, she uses color, pattern, chaos, and emotion to create multi-dimensional works that reflect the many (and often innocuous) layers of the daily human experience.

    The creation of characters and fantastic worlds is the universe that defines the work of Rodrigo Oñate (Rocodrilo). Originally from the city of Queretaro, Mexico, Roco embarked on his career as a self-taught plastic and graphic artist, influenced by the pop culture of the 80s, comics, graffiti, and various artists representing Mexican art. By extracting himself from his context and looking at it from the outside, he found a better appreciation and understanding of Latin American culture, thus conceiving a style with a contemporary and modern vision of Latino folklore, mixing techniques that since his career has gained great relevance as in graffiti or pop art.

    Urban Camper is a Minnesota-based photographer who primarily documents street art and graffiti. His focus is to give some permanence to a generally ephemeral art form. With the same sense of documenting a moment in time, Urban Camper journals life experiences with his camera.

    Members of the Twin Cities dance community, including dancers from local contemporary company TU Dance, will perform an improv series in conjunction with the closing night of John Foster’s first-ever solo exhibit, Shimmer. Followed by Q and A.

    Artistic ambitions collide as movement brings objects to life in this existential exploration of light, color and reflection. The juxtaposition of Foster’s kaleidoscopic geometry matched with the immediate proximity of improvisational dance will make for an experience that bridges two different corners of the local artistic landscape – providing two different interpretations of the same world.

    “I think the combination of John’s work and the response we have planned will make for an interesting display that adds yet another dimension to his artwork,” says Amanda Sachs, one of the participating TU Dance members. “Just like some of the pieces in Shimmer, improv can embody varying textures and can represent meaning that is both direct and abstract. Your perspective defines what’s a contradiction or a similarity, and an interpretation is often dependent on what it’s in relation to.”

    This freeform performance experience aims at redefining the traditional audience-performer relationship while examining the concepts of perspective and reflection.

    ABOUT JOHN FOSTER
    Materials geek John Foster employs various formal and situational strategies to create what can best be described as beautiful moments. Born in Los Gatos, California, John’s fascination with color and light began early, when he was diagnosed with a condition that causes severe bone pain. The limited physical mobility this resulted in inspired John to create movement and relationships with materials, combining the effects of light, color, geometry, and physics. Foster’s work evolved into creating and documenting actual objects that allow us to glimpse a glimmer of the infinite that lies beyond the future.  

    ABOUT THE DANCERS
    The improvisational response to John Foster’s work will involve dancers Jake Lewis, Samantha Lewis, Emma Marlar, Alex Pham, Amanda Sachs and Christian Warner, many of whom are involved with Bon Iver’s Come Through collaboration, among many other dance projects both locally and internationally.

    Samantha Lewis graduated with her BFA in Dance at Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts in 2019. She grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota where she started her training at Minnesota Dance Theatre and TU Dance. She has attended summer intensives such as Joffrey Chicago, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Samantha has performed works by Yin Yue, Maxine Doyle, Mark Morris, Alonzo King, Dwight Rhoden, Greg Dolbashian, and Uri Sands. Samantha received her 200hr YTT certification in 2018.

     

    Emma Marlar originally from Kenosha, WI, now resides in the Minneapolis area, balancing a career in the performance, creation, and technical aspects of dance. Since graduating from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a BFA in Dance in 2016, she has taken on work that allows her to support others, spark conversation, create collaboratively, and pursue endless explorations in movement. Emma currently dances with Slo Dance, Jennifer Glaws and her company Jagged Moves, while also performing in other various project work around the Twin Cities. She is also constantly moving and making in the emerging dance trio, Kelvin Wailey, who creates in spaces such as houses, music venues, hair salons, rooftops, attics, and more. Emma creates her own work and recently premiered “ready when” at Rhythmically Speaking 10/2018, a performance that engages people in staged works inspired by jazz and American social dance forms united by a core of rhythmicity. In addition to creating and performing herself, Emma serves as the Production Manager for Ananya Dance Theatre and has toured both nationally and internationally with the company for five years.

     

    Randall Riley has been ministering, performing, and studying dance since his late childhood. Having trained at diverse schools such as The Rock School at Pennsylvania Ballet, The Ailey School, Ballet Atlantic, and Long Island University Brooklyn Campus’ BFA Program. Randall has worked with a plethora of artist from Earl Mosley, to Darrell Moultrie, Nathan Trice and most recently Ron K. Brown. Former member of Steps Repertory Ensemble and Ronald K. Brown/Evidence a Dance Company He is currently a company member with TU Dance.

     

    Jake Lewis is a native of St. Louis, Missouri. In 2010, he was inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts and was a finalist for the NDEO Artistic Merit, Leadership and Academic Achievement Award. Mr. Lewis has worked with choreographers Dwight Rhoden, Victor Quijada, Jean Emile, Jae Man Joo, Darrell Grand Moultrie, and members from Pilobolus. In 2013 and 2014, he performed in Alvin Ailey’s Memoria during Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s New York City Center season. After graduation from the Ailey/Fordham BFA program in 2015, he joined Ailey II.He is currently a company member with TU Dance.

     

    Christian A. Warner began his professional career at the age of seven in the NetWorks touring production of Oliver! The Musical, and later joined the east coast tour of Disney’s The Lion King as Young Simba, making his broadway debut two years later. He graduated from HSPVA in Houston and Point Park University in Pittsburgh with a BFA in dance. Christian has acquired repertoire by Sonya Tayeh, Troy Powell, Thang Dao, Dwight Rhoden, Larry Keigwin, Jessica Hendricks, Mark Morris, Bennyroyce Royon and Luke Murphy, and Stacey Tookey. He most recently worked for Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre. He is currently a company member with TU Dance.

     

    Alexander Pham a native of Minnesota, received his BFA in Dance and BS in Human Resource Development from the University of MN Twin Cities with dual honors. Alexander has performed works by artists such as Roy Assaf, Gregory Dolbashian, Martha Graham, Bill T. Jones, Larry Keigwin, Stephen Petronio, Zoe Scofield, and Yin Yue among others. Alexander most recently danced for Spectrum Dance Theater under the artistic direction of Donald Byrd for three years, touring nationally and internationally. He has also performed with Seattle-based company zoe | juniper, and Boise-based company LED. He is currently a company member with TU Dance.

     

    Amanda Sachs was born and raised in New Jersey. She started her training at The Academy of Dance Arts in Red Bank, New Jersey. At age 17, Amanda moved to San Francisco to be part of the Alonzo King Lines Training Program. During this program she had original roles created on her by Iratxe Ansa, Sidra Bell, Maurya Kerr, Gregory Dawson, Erik Wagner, Kara Davis, Keelan Whitmore, Sandrine Cassini, and Uri Sands as well as performing excerpts of King’s Rasa and Ocean. Following the training program, Amanda joined The Francesca Harper Project in New York City and has also participated in the Metamorphosis International Dance Residency under the direction of Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich. She is currently a company member with TU Dance.

    Join artist John Foster, Director Cassie Garner and moderator Jade Patrick for an intimate conversation and a look into the mind of that created our latest exhibition Shimmer. Foster combines color, light, space into sculptural synergy forming art objects ranging from radiant house plants and wall pieces to furniture. Fine Art and Quantum Theory intersect in the process he describes as “inter-dimensional quilting.” Sculpted peaks and valleys of light represent a collaboration between strength and failure. Shimmer seeks to bridge the distance between the viewers and the objects.

    Foster, premiered selections from his new work, the Chromaflora Botanical Collection, as well as the first series of hand-formed dichroic aluminum paintings that make up the Empyrean Corrugation. Though featuring his latest work, Foster won’t let down his long-time fans; Shimmer includes many of his classic kaleidoscopic polyhedra, the iridescent geometric aesthetic that has earned John worldwide recognition.

His work is in private collections around the world, including the Interstellar Sparkle Table commissioned by Zedd, which was cited in Architectural Digest. In 2017, John’s sculpture, Truth Ore, was featured in the Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival in the United Arab Emirates.

    John works with artists to cultivate a culture of skill sharing, community building, artistic growth, and the spaces in which this occurs. He conducts participatory workshops, most recently, a weeklong project in Black Rock City in which he collected MOOP (matter out of place) and employed adaptive reuse techniques to make the Chromaflora Cyborg Botanical series. He’s currently based building a makerspace in Iowa City to host residencies and offer sanctuary for other working artists.[/bscolumns]

    The end result is an experience of objects exploding in colorful motion that is dynamic and yet discrete. “You cannot cast a shadow if you let light through,” says Foster. “In spectral flux, the shadow is a projection filtering light into chromatic harmony, activating optical vibrations that produce visual/tactile synesthesia.”

    For Bright Side, Gamut Gallery welcomes six artists exhibiting works which share a connective mood and harness kinetic energy. Relying on the elements of line, color, contrast, texture and form within a space, the works are based in reality but result in a liminal experience. While the artists present different media – from figurative and representational to abstract and painterly – they exist in the spectrum of the whimsical and phantasmal, united through color and methodical expression. By attaching a visual context to an emotional state, the combined works create a dialogue optimistic in nature.

    In Hilary Greenstein’s collage and oil paintings, she uses found vintage photos to invoke quintessential scenarios capturing the art of familiarity. Often existing in the lacuna state, her works are open-ended poetic pieces intended as evocative vignettes attached to childhood memories. Merging fine arts with a street art aesthetic, Barret Lee’s fantastical character paintings and floating landscapes lend a utopian outlook. Through thoughtful use of color and space, he provides intimate moments of reflection and retrospection.

    Defying the misconception that abstract art is synonymous with chaotic design, artists Derek Meier, Laura Bennett and Erin Nistler create works which highlight the natural curiosity of the abstract movement with implied intention. Meier’s emphasis on color and texture rather than line or form conveys a sense of unpredictability, yet his use of small and large color fields is deliberate and intuitive. Through derelict symbols, crude geometry and found two-dimensional objects, he creates a visual dialogue inspired by the composition of a landscape. Using elements of scribble motif and playing with a light vs. dark color palate, Bennett’s paintings draw the viewer into a world where the focal points demand attention.

    Nistler taps into the more methodical aspects of abstract art with works inspired by architecture, geometric shapes, fashion design and storytelling. Similarly inspired by geometry, John Foster explores how people relate to objects and architectural design. Uniting the organic with the inorganic, Foster’s series of reversed pyramid cut acrylic hedrons are designed to reflect natural light, creating sparkling, prism-like visuals. Colorful and captivating, his pieces allow for an experience with a sculptural composition.
