A holiday sale in a gallery setting, Gamut Gallery provides a fun-filled, consumer conscious alternative to chain stores and mass mall shopping with the 6th annual shopping event, Raging Art On. Described as an “art-happening meets holiday party meets pop-up boutique,” an “uncurated” art experience awaits the adventurous shopper on the hunt for the perfect gift for the artist, musician, writer or other creative maker on their holiday season shopping list. This year, Gamut has extended the annual sale to include an additional day, which means five days, extra hours of epic rummaging and, of course, more time to enjoy the party. We’ve hand-selected the 50+ local artists involved, but they decide what to show and where to show it. What results is a gallery packed from floor to ceiling with paintings, photography, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

The five-day-long event will see performances from DJs James Patrick, Modwell, Danny Sigelman, Juleana Enright, Bobby Kahn, Tony “Etones” Larson, Jesse Lingenfelter, and The Headspace Collective. Come for the art; stay for the party.

Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Gifts for sale at this event are handmade locally and are in harmony with the values of those concerned by mainstream holiday effects on our environment and our world — landfills, factory and shipping-caused pollution, issues of outsourcing and fair trade, consumer culture, etc. Raging Art On offers a place to join like-minded people together through art, music, performance and conversation.

  2. Genrebeast 5: ACTN CD Release + Halloween Party + 7 Sins Finale

As we celebrate the end of the 6-month-long anti-genre residency program and CD release party series, Genrebeast, we want to reflect on the amazing collaborative experience this series has brought to Gamut. Working alongside multi-talented musician, Gus Watkins, Genrebeast has represented the epitome of Gamut Gallery’s mission statement – bringing people together to experience art & stimulate dialogue. The visceral art/sound experience put Gamut at the epicenter of a half-year music residency featuring five album releases from five contradistinctive bands – Ghost Army, DEATHDANCE, Patch, Qaanaaq, and ACTN – which coincided with five of Gamut’s exhibit finales. Aside from hosting this sensory extravaganza, the project has allowed Gamut to join forces with an eclectic array of local bands including Jaedyn James & The Hunger, Mary Bue and the Holy Bones, RP Hooks, Half Tramp and more, creating an event series that merged an audience of art and music lovers alike. Each Genrebeast installment was a great reminder of the mantra: “music is about art movement, not genre; community, not scene; playing, not partying.”

For the closing reception of the painting series exhibition, #7Sins, we welcome back Genrebeast for one final performance on the Gamut stage featuring the band ACTN. Pronounced by saying the letters, ACTN makes enigmatic music that blends trip-hop, enigmatic alt-pop, and avant garde rock. Music writers from around the world have called the band’s work textured, intoxicating, nifty, fuzzy, cinematic, innovative, soulful, incredibly catchy, complex, sinister, offbeat, moody, stunning, gloomy and dark.

Genrebeast 5 marks the CD release party of their latest album, “You Will Never Be Known” featuring members Gus Watkins, Peter Kenyon, Ray Minge and KPT. With opening acts K. Raydio, Minnie / Bluntz and The Stress of Her Regard.

Doubling as a Halloween Party, the night will be filled with live music, a costume contest, seasonal parlor games and fun prizes. This will also be the last chance to view the 7 Sins exhibit from painter Kate Renee. Returning for her second solo show exhibition with Gamut Gallery, Renee debuts her new three dimensional painting technique in her exhibition, 7 Sins. A natural progression to her Beauties Behaving Badly exhibit. Renee’s latest series examines the seven deadly sins – gluttony, wrath, greed, envy, vanity, sloth and lust – each paired with a familiar pop culture icon or classic cartoon character. Through political and pop culture parody, Renee’s characters provide light-hearted, playful narratives for the underlying sinister themes of her work.

    Gus Watkins:
Gus Watkins is a creatively restless and ambitious multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and lyricist. Watkins has been recording and performing nationally for over a decade, and has been based in Minneapolis since 2007.

    K.Raydio:
A self-proclaimed “Daughter of the Midwest,” singer/songwriter K.Raydio (born Krysta Rayford) has released two EP’s, performed in many of the Twin Cities’ landmark concert venues (7th Street Entry, Cabooze, Varsity Theater), established a fanbase in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, and conquered stage fright – in less than a year. Who is K.Raydio? You’re about to find out. https://kraydio.bandcamp.com/

    Minnie / Bluntz:
Minnie Blanco and Mo Bluntz, after years of friendship, finally join forces to release a poppy, yet gritty album for your earholes. https://soundcloud.com/minniebluntz

    The Stress of Her Regard:
Half of the former indie-rock band, Idle Hands, the trio have emerged with Sport Marriage, an EP that draws influence from the Jesus & Mary Chain, Johnny Cash, and Jim Jarmusch, and comes out sounding more like smart British rock that cashes in on bright beats and clever construction.  https://thestressofherregard.bandcamp.com/releases

A Killer Affair: A Blacktie Evening

Artists, musicians, creative makers – you know their art, you know their faces, you get lost in their music videos. But no good artist goes it alone; it takes a village of creative souls to birth a star. Like a gallery nurtures an artist they love, showcasing their work via exhibitions and project management, Polkadot Mayhem has been supporting local creatives since 2014 and Gamut Gallery since 2012. Yet often times the faces behind these businesses, get lost in the crowd. Tonight is a celebration of the talented minds who help launch the careers of the brilliant people they support and believe in.

Polkadot Mayhem’s tag line is “We do cool things with creative people”, and their track record thus far certainly agrees. Mark Mallman, BOTZY, KPT, Bae Tigre and VAYNS have all released projects through the collective, maintaining a relentless dedication to their mission statement. Meanwhile, Gamut Gallery has hosting more than 35 exhibitions and countless more creative events in their 4+ years of business, giving exposure to hundreds of local emerging and established artists in the Twin Cities, such as Kate Renee, Wundr, Rodrigo Oñate and Rogue Citizen.

A Killer Affair represents an evening of live music, art and inspired conversation with some of the cities’ most innovative and active creative minds. 4. 7 Sins: A new series by Kate Renee

Painter Kate Renee returns for her second solo show exhibition with Gamut Gallery debuting her new three dimensional painting technique in her exhibition, 7 Sins. A natural progression to her Beauties Behaving Badly exhibit, Renee’s latest series examines the seven deadly sins – gluttony, wrath, greed, envy, vanity, sloth and lust – each paired with a familiar pop culture icon or classic cartoon character. Through political and pop culture parody, Renee’s characters provide light-hearted, playful narratives for the underlying sinister themes of her work.

For 7 Sins, Renee uses a recurring motif of “sevens,” applying seven layers of acrylic paint to create a multi-dimensional experience. An experimental departure from previous techniques which involved applying acrylic paint to birch and setting the resin as a sealant over the finished piece, in this series Renee pours layers of resin over natural wood to create thick spaces in between each paint layer producing a bold, 3D painting.

With a signature style that reads as “edgy with a cute veneer,” Renee’s distinctive bright color palate and stylistic lines draw the viewer to her lowbrow characters, while their sarcastic, dark and often uncomfortable content presents substance beyond the pop surrealist visage. Each body of work doesn’t simply breathe life into a new character, but challenges the viewer to examine the underbelly of society.

Renee sees the character choices for this series as evolutionary roles of the princess personalities she used in Beauties Behaving Badly – the Queen of Hearts representing “wrath,” the Wicked Witch of the West for “envy,” Mike Teavee from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for “sloth.” While surface level visuals may direct the viewer to relevant pop culture references, the concealed message is often somber and poignant, i.e. her use of the character Mike Teavee implies a political commentary on gun and police violence, a subtle shout-out to the Black Lives Matter movement. In “Greed,” she enlists the personification of the money- bags-toting Monopoly Man, but with minor changes that take on a Trump form. By highlighting relevant, au courant issues and involving her characters as active participants in that role, Renee presents a platform for a conversation between artist and viewer, however twisted that dialogue may turn.

In January 2013, Kate was awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, completed her Beauties Behaving Badly series and implemented a solo exhibition at Gamut Gallery. She had a nearly sell out show with this exhibit. Her 7 Sins exhibit marks Gamut’s longest running exhibition of the year with a series of accompanying pop-up events and performance pieces throughout its stint allowing for more opportunities to connect with the artist and her work.

Working closely alongside fine artist Kate Renee as she created her “7 Sins” collection of paintings, choreographer Danielle Ricci of Borealis Dance showcases performance inspired by the underlying ideologies of the #7Sins exhibition. For this project, Ricci opened up the opportunity for company dancers to chose a sin they had an affinity towards and create dance pieces inspired by those paintings. All of the pieces are interpretations of Renee’s creations, expressed through modern dance in various ways, in sum creating a cohesive response to her work.

Just like a finger print, no two people see art the same way. “Of Vice and Virtue” is a visual example of how we interpret things and form opinions through an individual lens. What Renee captured in paint, Ricci and fellow Borealis members comment and respond through expressive movement. By welcoming the audience to interpret each piece in their own distinctive way, the experience becomes multi-dimensional, much like Renee’s multi-dimensional paintings, 3-D in their appearance. Through collaboration with local artists, like Kate Renee, Borealis Dance sets out to bridge the gap between art forms to create deep, meaningful work that moves the audiences and challenges them to explore their own understanding.

Following the performance, Gamut Gallery’s Juleana Enright will mediate an art talk between Kate Renee and Danielle Ricci for an in-depth look into the philosophy behind each painting and dance piece. Audience participation and questions encouraged!

FEATURED ARTISTS: Wing Young Huie, Adam Theis, Meg Brown, Anna Bongiovanni, Tricia Khutoretsky, Adam Conrad, David Feily, Qassandra Kauzlarich, Judith Howard, Benjamin Wuest, Rachel Andrzejewski, Joan Vorderbruggen, Alex Potter, Kate Renee, Jim Bovino, Jasmine Seuling, Charlie Mendez, Ramses Alarcon-Sanchez

In every artist, there is an impetus to create; it starts with a spark. While most of us are only privy to the final product, local photographer, Ilya Natarius wants the audience to be frozen within the illumination of that original vision.

For the photojournalistic group exhibition, Creative Combustion, Natarius selected 18 creative makers representing a wide array of media and followed them to their place of inspiration, be it a physical atmosphere or an emotive memory. Documenting the experience through 35mm film and in-depth interviews, Natarius and his team of photographers and journalists hand-printed and compiled a photo essay exploring the source of creativity. Featuring photographers, musicians, aerial performers, master brewers, tattoo artists, curators, dancers, installation artists, and mixed media artists, the final project is a compelling visual photography series depicting talent and energy which offers an accompanying art book with pages of expose on the psychology of the art and the story behind their impulse to create.

Relying on the photojournalist credo of “realistic imagery,” Natarius’ work authentically allows the viewer to experience the “aura” of the subject photographed, an element often lost in the era of digital embellishment. By stepping away from photo manipulation, Natarius returns to what is rawest and truest in storytelling through images.

A departure from his previous personal photography work, which focused more on observing spatial environments, Creative Combustion is a mini drama of enfolding intersections and human connection. Each image projects the skill and confidence of the featured creatives while discussing the ingredients that come together to ignite their individual creative spark.

A genre obliterating project from local musician, Gus Watkins, Genrebeast is a visceral art/sound experience that puts Gamut at the epicenter of a 6-month-long music residency. Genrebeast features five album releases from five contradistinctive bands to coincide with five exhibit finales. Gamut is proud to host an exclusive event that merges an audience of art and music lovers alike for a sensory extravaganza.

With five wildly different, diverse-sounding projects, Watkins and his varied set of kindred musicians conceptualize and compose music meant to be explored as an art form, creating  without being overly concerned by labels or pigeon-holed by a ubiquitous sound. From its inception in 2011 as a musical showcase pitting incongruous bands together on one bill, Genrebeast has worked to rid the notion of music having to appeal to a specific scene to be fully appreciated. Evolving into a five-band-project led by Watkins, Genrebeast exists to unite the local music scene and expand tastes through musical eclecticism.

Inciting people to approach the music from an experiential format, Watkin’s residency acts as a catalyst for shedding an antiquated idea of music consumption. By bringing the artistry to the forefront and moving the performance to a gallery atmosphere where absorbing art is already the construct, Genrebeast reclaims the emotive intent and organic element music has often lost by simply being background noise in a bar setting. Through this shift in focus, Genrebeast sets out to build a community, not just a scene, through collaborative performance.

    BEAUTIES BEHAVING BADLY
KATE RENEE’S SOLO EXHIBIT AT GAMUT GALLERY

MINNEAPOLIS – Sat., Jan. 18, 2014 7:00-11:00 p.m. – Opening for “Beauties Behaving Badly” – the exhibit runs through Feb. 22.  Painter Kate Renee was awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board- Artist Initiative Grant in Jan. 2013; this exhibit is the culmination of the work it made possible.  Renee began with the concept of Disney princesses with an edgy twist, replacing their happy endings with real-world problems or circumstances.  Both theme and quality of work evolved rapidly over 2013, while fulfilling the grant and a Women’s Art Resource of Minnesota mentorship under Jill Waterhouse.  The resulting series reexamines archetypical fairytales, relaying each passed-down parable in a new way for a new generation.  Each beauty finds herself in a different predicament, often of her own choosing.  In each case, she is revealing her naughty side.

Through research, Renee found her not-so-happy-endings more akin to the historical telling of these familiar fairytales. Funding and feedback spurred development of this concept, also allowing tangible upgrades to Renee’s materials.  She previously used mainly acrylic on canvas or foam-core for her graphic, cartoon-like character studies.  In this new series she has developed a technique of applying the acrylics to birch and setting resin over the finished piece.  The natural wood grains add a subtle dimension of organic texture to her bold designs, while inspiring experimentation with the use of this rich, new background as negative space.  Renee paints a story in bold iconic imagery, complete with a main character in conflict and even some adorable sidekicks – all with the signature Kate Renee eyes.

Kate Renee has exhibited nationally and internationally, receiving press and numerous awards locally.  Most recently she earned a Minnesota State Arts Board- Artist Initiative Grant and was accepted as a protégé by the Women’s Art Resource of Minnesota. Renee earned a BA in Fine Arts, Art History, and a minor in design from the U of M in 2010.  Renee has interned at various galleries, culminating in an assistant gallery director internship and at Altered Esthetics, where she was subsequently hired as director of solo exhibitions.  She will debut her Beauties Behaving Badly series, spring 2014 at Gamut Gallery and is currently working on a series called “Naughty Neighborhood.”

BRETT EARLY /// Brett Early has been commissioned for store fronts in Minneapolis, such as Heavenly Soles and Buffalo Exchange. He remains a regular exhibitor at local art crawls and cafes. Early received a BFA in Illustration from the College of Visual Arts in 2005. Much of his training in illustration was rigorously aimed toward commercial applications. Early came away from this experience with a highly-attuned understanding of color, line, purpose and concept, but also with a distinct urge to reclaim the joy of painting for the elusive reasons of the folk artist, outsider-artist, or child. Early’s commitment: “If you are not having fun when looking at my work, then I’m not doing my job”

No one system can reproduce all colors in the spectrum, and no one artist can create an entire aesthetic in one art piece. This show will feature art that crosses the continuum of possibilities; the collective will illustrate the Gamut. True to the spirit of the Gamut, this show displays dynamic content and style from a diverse group of local artists, creatively tied together through the use of color.
