Gamut Gallery’s annual holiday event “Raging Art On” (RAO) returns this December with half of the 50 artists new to the show, and will run for three full weekends through December 22nd. Like years past, RAO is a cash-n-carry holiday sale in a gallery setting where there is literally art from ceiling to floor. It is “uncurated” in the sense that, aside from selecting who participates, the rest is left entirely up to the artists: what artwork to bring, how much to bring, and where it is hung. What results is a gallery packed to the brim with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

RAO will kick-off with a proper party featuring DJ Baard on Wednesday, December 5th from 7-10pm. Admission to this “first dibs” opener will be $20 or FREE with gallery membership. Capacity is limited, so reserve your ticket today: https://ragingarton2018.bpt.me

Described as an “art-happening meets holiday party meets pop-up boutique,” an “uncurated” art experience awaits the adventurous shopper on the hunt for the perfect gift for the artist, musician, writer or other creative maker on their holiday season shopping list. Gifts for sale at this event are handmade locally and are in harmony with the values of those concerned by mainstream holiday effects on our environment and our world — landfills, factory and shipping-caused pollution, issues of outsourcing and fair trade, consumer culture, etc. Raging Art On offers a place to join like-minded people together through art, music, performance and conversation.

  3. MASK: Exhibit Finale + Artist Talk

Join us for the exhibit finale of #MASK, a solo show of new works from Morgan Pease. An artist talk will begin at 6pm, moderated by close friend and fellow artist Russ White.

The night will also feature a set from James Patrick, a sound artist who thrives on bringing together the creative energy and ideas of his community. Through collaboration and experimentation, he creates immersive environments that explore the evolving definitions of sound art. His record label and events are both heavily supported by some of the greatest names in electronic music, and his personal recordings continue to make waves in the international electronic music circuit.

    ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
For his first solo show in Minneapolis, artist Morgan Pease debuts an exhibition of textured depth. A departure from his previous body of work which relied heavily on structure and solid rules, Pease’s current work explores the chaotic impulsivity of the masking technique. Dubbed Mask due to its dualistic meaning, this series explores a visual representation of human insecurities, examining the divisive masks we wear in day-to-day life and the vulnerability of peeling away layers to reveal what is truly underneath.

Using a fractal imagery process that he’s been mastering for over a decade, Pease builds up layers of paint, and seals them with a gloss, resin or poly providing a contrast to the white matte color above. Working with nearly all recycled materials and custom building all of the panels and drop-in frames, Pease is hands-on during every part of the process in his art, creating pieces ranging in size from 6’’x6’’ to 4’x8’.

What started as an escapism for the “monotony” and repetitive nature of his past work, this series was birthed out of a desire simply to add color and texture to the base of his artwork. Far from simply whitewashing a color scheme, Pease creates unpredictable bursts of experimentation in the form of vivid hues peeking through in a playful nature. By adapting a new paint application process that is unstructured, more free-flowing and organic, Pease is forced to address his emotional response to his work, destroying his own masked misconceptions and insecurities surrounding the need to control and embracing chaos.[/bscolumns]

MINNEAPOLIS – Saturday, Nov. 23, 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. – This year, Gamut Gallery’s “C4W: 2013” call-for-works show was entrusted to three local artists to jury and curate: arts writer and gallerist Nathaniel Smith, printmaker Ash Marlene Hane, and multi-disciplinary artist Jesse Draxler.  The resulting collection shows the depth of variety in minimalism and a range of moods from within the void. For the C4W Exhibit Finale, the blank canvas of sound will be entrusted to multi-instrumentalist Jacob Grun.  He will create a soundscape in harmony with the surrounding imagery.  Free admission is made possible in part by sponsorship from Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Opening night of C4W was a well-attended evening with local artists, gallerists and art supporters there to weigh in on the quality of the works.  Several praised the exhibit for its “cohesion,” a challenging feat for an open submission juried show. The video installation piece, “Perfection” by Nicholas Knutson, engaged crowds of people with interactive audio and physical aspects.  Another favorite was the large sculpture “This Isn’t a Surrender But I Would Be Hard-Pressed to Convince Otherwise,” by Nicholas Carroll, which combines an artist’s stool, blinds and other materials to create an object of contemplation.  The collection is especially suited for those interested in investing in art, with each piece priced 500 dollars or less.

Grun is widely known as the front man of local band “Me and My Arrow.”  In the last year the band played several shows at First Avenue alongside Touch People, Joan of Arc and Chris Cohen.  Grun is the lead singer/ songwriter, guitarist and studio producer for the group.  For nearly a decade, he has owned the storied recording studio Sound Gallery, a supportive resource for local musicians and bands.  There, Grun has honed the art of bringing community together through music in a unique and exciting atmosphere.  At the C4W Exhibit Finale, Grun will provide a mysterious one-man set.
