    Driven by a handful of small skate shops, a plethora of independent skateboard films, thrilling private indoor ramps, and most importantly, packs of friends, the Twin Cities skateboarding community is convincing in its sincerity and unapologetic for its candidness. The obstacles that keep the Minnesota skateboarding scene somewhat unknown are the same factors that spur an earnest, DIY-forward, creative community.

    With the X-Games once again taking Minneapolis by storm, it is important to recognize the traditionally remote nature of Twin Cities skateboarding. In contrast to coastal metros, Minneapolis and St. Paul rarely receive branding dollars, billboards, or national ad campaigns. Aside from the few local skate shop owners and the occasional sponsored skater, in the Twin Cities, the skating industry can appear almost as a mirage, vicariously felt through Instagram feeds and the pages of Thrasher Magazine.

    It is easy to understand why the Twin Cities does not receive more widespread acclaim in the skating world. For at least four months out of the year, a slippery, frigid, white fluff carpets the city streets. Due to the inevitable clockwork of freezing and thawing in cold weather, many acclaimed skate spots are no longer feasible because of ever cracking pavement, with the ones remaining skatable arguably less than ideal. Thanks to geographic destiny, any Twin Cities-based curious skaters or companies would have to cross the Dakotas, Illinois, or Wisconsin to reach refuge from the snow. The likely reason for the current outsider interest in Minneapolis is due to a controversial building of the US Bank Stadium, which muddles the excitement around national attention. When it comes to skateboarding in the Twin Cities, nothing is easy, but no skater will ever tell you that.

    Cracked Pavement is an exhibition featuring a mere handful of the independent creative minds cultivated within the skateboard scene. Dylan Strait preserves grotesque 80s skate punk traditions, creating line intensive ink-wash illustrations of decaying faces, empty beer cans, and rotting flesh. Kevin Horn utilizes an in-depth understanding of capturing light, shadow and motion, bringing a commercial industry skill set and fine art nuance to skateboard photography. Jeremy Lindvig recalls skateboards of his youth by painstakingly restoring vintage decks through countless hours of repairing wood and layered silk screening. Many different mediums, methods and means are used to produce the artwork exhibited, all speaking to and celebrating the vibrancy of the Twin Cities skateboarding community.

    As a culmination of her solo exhibit #SeeingVoices, join us for an artist talk with Jane Wunrow in conversation with Gamut Gallery Assistant Allie Mickle for a discussion of her work. The artist will provide context for her seemingly abstract compositions, going into further detail about her artistic inspirations, her life as an artist, and her intricate processes.

    Later that evening, help us celebrate #SeeingVoices one final time with an exhibit finale 7-10pm featuring a DJ set from Gerardo Morado, known under the moniker 88project. Primarily exploring house music sets, 88project has always had a big love for music since his early years and was always driven by underground experimentations, an idea that can into fruition with he discovered electronic music. At age 17 he began to experiment with the art of mixing and soon began to make a name for himself playing in major clubs and cities in the northern Mexican and Midwest regions.

    ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
    With her first solo show, Jane Wunrow presents works that are directly influenced by specific dreams or migraine aura she experiences, particularly those that surface subconscious fears, pains, or perceptions. While creating, Wunrow puts herself back into that mental headspace and taps into the emotions that she felt in that dream state, imbuing her works with raw feeling. “Seeing Voices” places Wunrow’s dreams and visual perceptions into the physical realm.

    ABOUT 88 Project
    88project has always had a big love for music since his early years being influenced by artist such a Iggy Pop & Velvet Underground he was always driven by the underground side of things. This clicked perfectly when he discovered Electronic music. 88project soon began to make a name for himself playing in all the major clubs, cities in the northern Mexican region, and the Midwest region (USA). His diverse styles of mixing has caught the attention of many and has landed him gigs and broadcasts in many major cities. His sets vary from Deep House to Techno always keeping a very energetic deep groovy atmosphere. He has recently joined the (Unike Muzik) family a New York based label

    An art form with an over 1,000 year history, tattooing is slowly losing the rebellion stigma that it previously held, with roughly one in five Americans now claiming one. Through changing social norms powered in part by the online era and a new generation of tattoo consumers, the art form is slowly gaining acknowledgement within fine-art communities. Partnering with local Minneapolis tattoo artists Lindsee Boyer of Bee Ink and Nate Vincent Szklarski of Saint Sabrina’s, Gamut Gallery presents Spit Shade, an exhibit of original artwork created by tattoo artists.

    The initial idea for Spit Shade was to create an exhibition space reminiscent of a tattoo shop waiting area covered with flash designs. While affinity for those classic designs is in some ways a prerequisite for this line of work, most tattoo artists find their way into tattooing through an early interest in the arts and continue their individual art practice outside the shop. As planning progressed, the curators decided to broaden the scope of the exhibit and encourage tattoo artists to explore other media and inspirations. As stated by Nate, “as a tattooer I know that I love to create body art for people, but at the end of the day nothing feels more passionate than putting down the machine and picking up a brush and creating something that ultimately is mine from start to finish.” While many of the artworks exhibited will retain the spirit of tattoo art, the organizers are excited to see what experiments and innovations will be created.

    Spit Shade provides an opportunity to not only bring the robust and varied Minnesota tattoo community together, but also to include artists from other states who will be coming to town for the annual Minneapolis Tattoo Arts Convention. Opening night of the exhibit will double as the official opening party for the convention and will feature DJ No Pants, playing music from the likes of the Kinks and other 1960’s, & 70’s bands & hip-hop hits from the 90’s

    Isn’t it time to bring the gallery crawl back to Minneapolis? Where people can wander from one gallery to the next, view art that is professionally presented and smartly curated, and meet up with other art enthusiasts? Six galleries across the downtown arts district are working together to make this happen, and bring back this element of a ‘gallery scene’.

    The Exhibitions (by Gallery):

    SooVAC: Black and Yellow. Oregon artist Donald Morgan’s exhibition will combine two complimentary bodies of work. His concepts are generated from reworking narrative elements from books, a loose process of adapting and re-territorializing text into sculptures and paintings.
    + Kulture High, by Kelly O’Brien, explores a tongue-in-cheek examination of how contemporary art and pop culture compete and complement one another.

    Groveland: A summer-long spotlight on local artists takes place in June with two new exhibitions at Groveland Gallery. Pictures from a Trip is a travel-themed exhibition featuring paintings, prints and drawings by 41 gallery artists. Love Letters from Artists, an invitational group show curated by St. Paul architect and artist Peter Kramer, presents over 75 letters from artists across the Twin Cities. Artists were encouraged to “paint, weave, paste, fold and print what’s in their hearts,” promising a unique exhibition that celebrates the tradition of writing and receiving letters.

    Gamut: Middle Class Aspirations features Wundr, Biafra Inc., and Urban Camper in a merging of their media and political activism. Through prints, photography and paintings, the three street artists shine a prudent spotlight on class division, expose inequality and celebrate those who are attempting to rise above hardships and better themselves.

    Instinct: Art On Air. Through the work of seven visual artists, this exhibition is designed to help us appreciate the ubiquitous, essential, invisible ocean of air that we live in. One could experience life in the envelope and hardly give air a second thought. This show is meant to put us consciously in touch with our atmosphere, air quality, the beauty of big skies, the essence of breathing, and the virtue of the invisible.

    Burnet: In ‘sugar sugar’ Ashely Peifer’s deceptively simple, candy-colored abstracts intentionally evoke impressions of simpler times and childlike innocence. Inspired by Mary Heilmann – with suggestions of Lisa Frank, Peifer’s works are intentionally vague, reflecting the emotional nature of nostalgia to distort memory.

    Circa: OMFORME + CIRCA features an eclectic mix of modern and vintage repurposed furniture and accessories, and recent contemporary abstract artwork. The exhibit is a juxtaposition of textures, palettes, inventive materials, and art and design influences.

    Minneapolis     – Saturday September 6, 2014, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. CHIDO: a collaboration between photographer Serene Supreme & mixed media artist Ramses Alarcon. Together they bring out the inner cool or “chido” of the first forty respondents to Serene’s open call for models. Her signature Polaroid portraits were enlarged and printed, then directly drawn and painted upon by Ramses. With a commitment to showing the select shot for every volunteer-model and every drop of ink and paint applied by Ramses, the series catalogs an unfiltered exploration of how different “cool” can be from one person to another.
