    Gamut Gallery’s annual Call-4-Work exhibition is not a show that influences what art should be. Instead, the chosen guest curator brings their unique perspective and interpretation of the submitted works ranging the full “Gamut” of visual media. When Katie Garrett accepted the challenge of curating this year’s C4W: 2020, she practiced an exercise in responsive curation, empowering the 175 artists to lead the way through all 745 submissions.

    On par for C4W, the 2020 submissions were a wild slice of the local art scene. A cross section of who saw the call, and who felt compelled to contribute. It was especially heartening to discover a collection of submissions from artists novel to the gallery. As a step toward more balanced representation, Gamut Gallery waived all submission fees for Black Artists and Artists of Color. This is a practice that we will continue with progressing into the future, opening the door to artists that may not have had the accessibility in previous years.

    A theme emerged around ideas of projection, optimism, truth, and action – creating a wild, saturated world that breathes life into us from every angle. Revealed in a body of work by 42 artists, these elements convey a hopeful and restorative life ahead. Biological elements invite inspiration of growth through texture, material, pattern, and figure. This rich, fertile ground features jewel tones pulling everything together, welcoming wet, magnetic pieces to pull at the imagination and occupy your whole mind. These chosen 43 works tell you stories and let everything else slip away for a moment, releasing judgement allowing the art do the work.[/bscolumns]

    ABOUT THE CURATOR:
    Since 2005, MPLSART has been the Twin Cities’ best resource to access local art. Katie and team have been running the site since 2014. MPLSART is dedicated to building a larger art audience, and being a voice for under represented and emerging artists. Since 2017, Katie has used a curatorial role with The Hive Salon in Minneapolis as an experimental opportunity to develop her relationship with local artists and introduce new work to the clientele. In early 2019, Katie was selected to jury Wintertide, produced by Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA), facilitated by Public Functionary.

    Katie delights in applying her decade-long background in advertising to the fine arts, elevating the role of art in everyday life. She wants everyone to know how much better life is with meaningful art on your walls and artists as friends. She is determined to make an art-lover (and art-buyer) out of every resident in MSP.

    The time has come to bid “From Us : Together, Forever, Sometimes” a proper farewell on Wednesday, May 27th 2020. We will be partnering up with the fine folx mplsart to host “Behind the Poster”.  This finale is a long time coming and it feels great to shine a bit more light on this exhibition that was cut short in out brick & mortar last March. We are very proud of all the designers that put their hearts into their works, finding inspiration from the poetry written by Molly-Margaret Johnson and Kareem Rahma. Behind the Poster, a virtual art talk, will showcase several of those designers through candid videos that were self recorded last week.

    FROM US: Together Forever Sometimes:
    We began with thirty untitled and unauthored poems by Molly-Margaret Johnson & Kareem Rahma. By eliminating titles and byline for each poem, the audience is given an opportunity to connect more viscerally with the work by having to read between the lines without preconceptions of race, gender or sexual orientation. The outcome is an ouroboros of words written by two uniquely different individuals coming together.

    Johnson & Rahma’s poetry was then shared with local and national typographers, illustrators and designers who were challenged to conceive a personal rendition of the selected poem of their choice. Through screen print, letterpress, woodblock, hand lettering, and various illustrative elements, they will produce posters that push the viewer’s interpretation, adding yet a third layer of complexity to the written prose.

    The culmination of this process extends to those who will visit the gallery to experience From Us. Featuring bold, fluid, high contrast, and vibrant visual representations, the gallery walls will be filled with content that will connect with viewers. We anticipate engaging, perception-bending conversations filled with an appreciation and respect for differences as the outcome.

    Gamut Gallery celebrates one more time our latest exhibition “In Between”. For the finale we welcome Gamut first time performer NuAge Knight. Knight’s elevated future dub creates the perfect backdrop to envelope “In Between”.

    “In Between” embodies that space between life and death, conscious and subconscious, pen and paper, form and transcendence. This joint exhibit features the art of James Zucco and Kim Heidkamp. Zucco’s work draws on existential questions about life, death, and transcendence. Heidkamp creates fluid paper sculptures that capture movement in a paused moment.

    ABOUT THE ARTISTS
    James Zucco spent many years creating award-winning work as an art director in advertising. Three of his commercials are featured in the permanent collection at MoMA, and his work has earned an Emmy nomination and other industry honors. In 2015 James shifted his focus to his passion for fine art. He now spends his days in the studio, drawing and painting across a variety of mediums. His art now resides in private collections across North America, Europe, and the Middle East and has been featured in The New York Times and The California Sunday Magazine.

    Kim Heidkamp graduated from the Bethel University. She has a 1 year post-baccalaureate certificate program at Bethel for fine art. After working as a graphic designer for seven years, the urge to create led Heidkamp to abandon her day job and focus on her art. Working out of her studio in the Casket Arts Carriage House, she has dedicated the last two years to developing and honing her paper sculptural works. She has completed several commissions and participates in the annual NEMAA Art-A-Whirl. This is her first major gallery show.

    Writers, Rebels, & Rejects celebrates the street artists and graffiti writers who fill our public sphere with tags, wheatpastes, characters and stickers, bringing them into a gallery setting to focus on the “art” in street art. This group of talented writers, painters, and designers have collectively spent thousands of hours developing their craft on open-world canvases such as railroads, bridges, billboards, and dumpsters using a diverse arsenal of tools ranging from common latex house paint to rattle cans, paint markers to stickers, and mops to fire extinguishers, making work that ranges from simple tags to complex monikers, cute character designs to bold abstract color blocks.

    As well as original artworks, these artists have been asked to work their magic on one of two dozen miniature white box trucks, one of many blank canvases often found in the wild. Writers, Rebels, & Rejects brings the outdoors inside and shines light on work usually done in the shadows, giving these subcultural contributions the consideration they deserve.

    We have long taken for granted the idea of “property”. There is a clear divide between public and private spaces, and that even in public spaces, the deluge of images and advertisements barraging our senses on billboards and bus stops is legitimate because capital changed hands. We tend to think that money alone buys the right to our vision, but anyone with a sense of disenchantment with the status quo can spark a love affair with “getting up” that can be hard to extinguish.

    Gamut Gallery is pleased to announce a collaborative exhibition, 7 Warrior Women, produced by artist Kristi Abbott opening on March 31, 2018.

    Inspired to push the boundaries of her technique and subject matter, Abbott led a group of local artists to create a collection of works that center around seven imagined and embodied figures—women from each of the Earth’s seven continents. These mystical and bold feminine characters represent the strength and energy of women around the world and across time. These figures, imagined through costume elements, photographs, paintings, world maps, and other elements, carry certain cultural markers distinctive to their geography and heritage, but their power and beauty speak universally to the essence of the feminine.

    Abbott, a native to Australia, carefully forms intricate portraits out of varying types and textures of paper for her collage work. Her portraits are often embedded with hidden images, “small secrets” relating back to some part of the personality or biography of the individual, unlocking their story one detail at a time. Contributing artists include Yuya Negishi, Sarah Epperson, RJ Kern, Kada of Artful Eclectic, and six local models. Negishi, a Japanese mural artist who works with traditional and contemporary imageries, created the spray painted backdrops for each piece, as well as several smaller complimentary pieces that will be presented alongside the seven warriors. Epperson is a tattoo artist, painter, and maker, who contributed to the exhibition through her tattoo-like body paintings adorning each warrior, and created the headdresses and face paint worn by several of the women.

    Negishi and Epperson work in a similar way to Abbott, drawing on narrative and conducting thorough research that serves to inform their flowing, energetic images. Kern, a fine art photographer, skillfully captured the essence of strength in the seven warrior women who were directed by Abbott at a recent photo shoot for the project, while Kada translated Abbott’s concepts through makeup and body paint containing iconic imagery on several of the women for the shoot. Those images served as a building block in the creation of the collages, one of the many layers and steps in a thoughtfully choreographed process. The final result is a powerful body of work that illustrates Abbott’s exceptional talent with this dynamic and fresh approach to collage art and collaboration.

    In A Gallery Far, Far Away… presents a celebration of Star Wars, paying homage to the franchise while including a variety of artists from different backgrounds working in various media, showcasing that Star Wars is not defined by George Lucas or Disney, but belongs to the fans. This exhibit will be on display for three days only with free viewing during our regular weekly hours (Thur-Sat 1-7pm), and will culminate with a proper party Saturday, December 16th, 7-11pm ($5 entry or free with gallery membership). The party will feature a live orchestral performance of the Star Wars theme song in addition to other inspired improvisations by Adam Conrad’s Improvestra. The Headspace Collective will bring us back to the times of the original Star Wars release by spinning late 70’s era disco, and Andy Fitton will contribute a space-inspired ambient DJ set to the festivities. Star Wars costumes are strongly encouraged.

     

    Whether you love it or hate it, Star Wars has been an influence on your life. Marking its 40th anniversary this year, spanning a multitude of media and connecting generations, the Star Wars franchise is pervasive to modern life. Even if you haven’t seen the films, countless musicians, artists, filmmakers and more have been shaped by the Star Wars-verse, the extensive range of products that have helped bring “nerd” culture into the mainstream. The eighth installment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15th, and Gamut’s original crew members Mark Dean and Kurtis “Kujo” Johnson thought it fitting to present a Minneapolis artists’ ode to Star Wars: In A Gallery Far, Far Away…

     

    ABOUT THE CURATORS: The two curators came to Star Wars in different ways; Dean a die-hard fan from childhood, and Kujo more recently found affinity by watching the series with his son. The concept behind the exhibit is driven by Star Wars fandom. The curators are even planning to recreate a child’s bedroom, complete with posters, comics, and action figures. The exhibit was invitational at first, but as word spread about the show, Dean and Kujo decided to put out a call for submissions, recognizing that there are so many unique styles pushing the envelope in exciting and innovative ways. The artists were asked not only to think about the impact of Star Wars on their lives, but also to think about the larger galaxy and cosmos to gain inspiration for their works. Not limited to branded franchise imagery, artists were encouraged to explore Star Wars world phenomenon, inspiring a wide variety of works that collectively create an environment rich in imagination.[/bscolumns]

    Join us for the exhibit finale of #MASK, a solo show of new works from Morgan Pease. An artist talk will begin at 6pm, moderated by close friend and fellow artist Russ White.

    The night will also feature a set from James Patrick, a sound artist who thrives on bringing together the creative energy and ideas of his community. Through collaboration and experimentation, he creates immersive environments that explore the evolving definitions of sound art. His record label and events are both heavily supported by some of the greatest names in electronic music, and his personal recordings continue to make waves in the international electronic music circuit.

    ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
    For his first solo show in Minneapolis, artist Morgan Pease debuts an exhibition of textured depth. A departure from his previous body of work which relied heavily on structure and solid rules, Pease’s current work explores the chaotic impulsivity of the masking technique. Dubbed Mask due to its dualistic meaning, this series explores a visual representation of human insecurities, examining the divisive masks we wear in day-to-day life and the vulnerability of peeling away layers to reveal what is truly underneath.

    For her first solo curation, Gamut Gallery co-owner Cassie Garner hand-selected a roster of national and local artists whose artwork highlights the bold energy and aesthetics of her personal taste. Using a 10” x 10” dimension constraint, each artist was asked to produce two pieces which speak to the collectable nature of tiny art and showcased their unique skill and artistic voice. Running the gamut of art styles, Sq2 features illustration, street art, graphic design, collage, abstract, photography, glitch, and mixed media. Unobtrusive yet not to be overlooked, compact art is the digestible alternative to its counterpart. Perfect for the apartment dweller or first time art buyer, tiny art begs to be collected, pairs well with others and carries a non-committal feel.

    Uniting Gamut’s past with present, this exhibit welcomes back a handful of artists in Gamut’s repertoire, including Yuya Negishi, Bunny Portia, Paige Guggemos, Erin Sayer and members of the Rogue Citizen artist collective. A co-curator of last year’s Guerrilla Girls-inspired feminist exhibition, Second Sex, Genie Castro’s work explores the challenges of life as an artist, wife, mother and woman through the use of bold monotypes, masterful strokes, layers of vibrant color and subtle detail which brim with kinetic energy. Formerly a Minneapolite, currently NY-based, Kyle Quinn first showed at Gamut during the group exhibition medley, C4W. With nods to photographer icons Nan Goldin and Robert Mapplethrope and a splash of 70’s gay erotica, Quinn’s work explores the subversive and intensely personal.

    Sq2 also features a few culturally known Gamut newcomers, including Booka B, Erica Parrot, Shön Troth, I.V. Hills, and Nicholas Harper, owner of Rogue Buddha Gallery. Best known for his portraits of women with elongated necks, Harper’s work examines magical realism and is heavily influenced by Russian and Orthodox Iconography, as well as literature and philosophy. Based in Las Vegas, street artist and zine writer, Shye creates anime-inspired illustrations and paintings. Whether using floral pastels, stark monochromatics, or captivating hues, her linework is sharp, leaning towards geometric shapes, patterns and mandala designs. Mash-ups both in concept and method, newcomer, Chris Larson’s illustrative works use digital, printmaking and bookbinding techniques to create queer meditations on beauty, identity, the environment and the esoteric.     MINNEAPOLIS – Thursday, October 1, 2015, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. – Gamut Gallery welcomes the public for the first time to its new location in Elliot Park – 717 South 10th Street – as part of the Minneapolis Gallery Crawl. This event will be a preview opportunity to see the space raw, with no artwork on display. Instead patrons will find tactile ways to interact with Gamut’s mission, goals and vision for the future and to provide community feedback.

    Earlier in the year news broke that Gamut’s original location at the Handicraft Guild would be redeveloped into condos this fall. Leadership opted for a break from public events rather than continue with regular programming. The summer hiatus provided the advantage for Gamut to research and plan for the future of the gallery and to procure another location. The new facility is a meaningful upgrade, positioning the gallery in an up-and-coming neighborhood that will help propel its continued success in producing engaging exhibitions, hosting creative events and supporting the local art scene and its makers.
