    MPLSART Sketchbook Project – MPLSART and Gamut Gallery present the MPLSART Sketchbook Project Exhibition, exhibiting over 30 new original works from local artists featured in the 2021 project.

    We have partnered up with MPLSART once again for the second iteration of the MPLSART Sketchbook Project Exhibition. When the 2021 sketchbooks were near the end of their travels, MPLSART and Gamut Gallery connected again to host a brilliant exhibit to showcase the five original sketchbooks and new works from half of the artists contributing to the traveling project. 

    Given the magnitude of artists and limited wall space, an open call was sent to all 70 artists and the first 35 to respond would have the opportunity to showcase their original work in the exhibition. The roster filled up with established and emerging artists, creating an eclectic exhibition featuring muralists, studio artists, street artists, graphic novelists, collage artists, and more. Gamut attendees may recognize familiar names that have been on exhibit at Gamut in the past and can look forward to 18 new artists who will be exhibiting their work in the gallery for the first time. 

    The exhibition has no defined theme, only a set of guidelines – works had to be new originals and available for under $500. In addition to featuring 35 original works, the exhibition will also be an opportunity to see the five original sketchbooks first-hand before going to auction at St. Paul based Revere Auctions this May.[/bscolumns][bscolumns class=”one_half_last_clear”]

    The talk art talk chain consists of curator Blaine Garrett and artists Samuel Fleming, Danielle Pebbles, Melissa Lee Sisk, and Piotr Szyhalski. This is not your typical artist talk. This talk will be a Q&A Chain — a method where Blaine Garrett, of MPLSART, will select a piece that intrigues him and ask the artists a couple of questions. From there, each chosen artist picks the next one, opening up the dialogue and inviting the artists to respond to each other.[/bscolumns][bscolumns class=”clear”][/bscolumns]

    MPLSART is a guiding voice in the Twin Cities visual arts community. Founded in 2005, MPLSART has been covering the best local exhibitions, artists, galleries, and more for nearly two decades. The Minneapolis and St. Paul arts community has long been hailed as one of the best in the nation and MPLSART works tirelessly to showcase the hard work of this amazing community as well as strive to create a more sustainable arts scene for all.

    The 2021 MPLSART Sketchbook Project is a unique survey of the Twin Cities visual arts community during another challenging year. Started in 2020 as a way to connect and support artists during the pandemic, the 2021 project is the second iteration bringing together a whole new set of amazing Twin Cities artists. Throughout 2021, 70 local artists contributed 120 original works to a series of five traveling sketchbooks. The project will be compiled into a beautiful limited edition book available for presale in March 2022 and the five original sketchbooks will be put up for auction with all net proceeds being divided among the 70 participating artists.     Gamut Gallery’s annual Call 4 Work and upcoming exhibition never has a pre-fixed theme. The chosen guest curator brings their unique perspective and interpretation of the submitted works ranging the full “Gamut” of visual media. When Teqen Zéa-Aida accepted the challenge of curating this year’s C4W: 2019, he allowed his mind to lead quietly, without prejudice, while sorting through the 722 submissions from 177 artists.    

    Through the artists’ works, Zéa-Aida began to feel a very real sense of urgency emerge, an immediacy borne of the political, cultural, and environmental turmoil of our times. As a result, he has selected works from 36 artists, creating a collection of more than 40 artistic statements about place and space, sensory reactions to drastically changing—and degrading—surroundings. This year’s show will feature works that are centered around community, emotions, and people; a push back against loss of self.

    ABOUT THE CURATOR
    For 25 years Teqen Zéa-Aida has been a business, cultural, and artistic force in Minneapolis. Zéa-Aida was cofounder of the iconic Vision Management Group, Inc. modeling agency, and the founder of the equally iconic—now nomadic—City Wide Artists inner city art gallery. Zéa-Aida described himself as someone with deep ties to the city’s art, fashion, and philanthropy communities, with a long-time resident’s knowledge of its inner-city neighborhoods. Today, Teqen works at the prominent Faricy Law Firm, P. A. and is deeply involved in local politics.

    “One has to allow the brightest talent of the moment to reach inside themselves and pull forth work that represents the energy, anxiety, and creativity of today. And of course, one has to hope that dreamed-of artists actually come through. But isn’t this the nature of art itself? Time and time again, during moments of collective confusion work can, should, and will emerge from toxicity and emptiness.     ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Dawid Mludzik  is a Polish-American multidisciplinary artists currently living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mludzik is a veteran engineer of the United States Air Force. He studied at the University of North Dakota as well as the Florence School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. Mludzik recieved a BA in Art, from the University of North Dakota in 2018. His works have been displayed in private galleries, museums, as well as international exhibitions.

    Meg Lionel Murphy compulsively paints heartbroken womxn that magically grow larger, stronger, and scarier than the world around them. As the paintings grow in number, she grows just a little larger, stronger, and scarier too. When not painting, she divides her time between working as the Art + Story Director of Pollen and volunteering as Editor-in-Chief of Paper Darts.

    Shhhhame is a non binary artist living in Saint Paul working in various mediums. Although their current primary focus is painting they also engage in mixed media, design, illustration, film, photography, woodwork, & textile. Growing up in a art based family structure influenced many early creative endeavors. Shame learned how to sew before they could read at age seven & fell deeply in love with the satisfaction & control of manifesting dreams. Currently they are exploring relationship with self through portraits & textiles of humans who inspire self love.

    KOLDKRAL is a Turkish artist based in Minneapolis. Coming from a background in music, more recently he explores art through a visual variety. From Painting, to photography, and miscellaneous design – KOLDKRAL uses art as a coping mechanism to escape the confines of formality and structure in everyday life. Much of the themes present in their art are provoked by the desire to stray away from surface level realities. “Music is something far more than what my ears can hear. At first I started to see colours in music..Now it’s become scenes, landscapes, beings, and worlds. Music and visual arts hold the same weight for me. It’s a warhead for me to push a button on that will obliterate toxic worlds that we are living through. The days where a person could only focus on one medium are long gone. I’ve got the mind and will to create worlds from anything – how could I not do what I want?”

    From political statements to traditional expression, delicate intricacies to abstracted geometries, human intimacy to surreal landscapes – C4W: 2018 curated by Tara LaPlante presents a kaleidoscopic range of styles, mediums, and artists’ points of view. More than 120 artists participated in Gamut Gallery’s “C4W: Call for Work” this year, submitting up to 5 pieces each of a wide range of visual media, including: video, installation art, sculpture, experimental technology, photography, fiber, drawing, painting, and collage.

    While there is no predetermined theme for the C4W exhibitions, the guest curator brings their unique perspective and interpretation to the submitted works. LaPlante was particularly fascinated by the diversity of the submissions – a characteristic that embodies Gamut’s approach to programming, where we strive to run the gamut of various styles, content and media – and made her selections based on their high standard of work and distinct quality. “My vision is to immerse the viewer within the broad and bold strokes of these art forms together, saturated in the idea that diversity in itself can create strength, set intrigue, and act as the spark for conversation and humanity,” said LaPlante.  

    New this year, there will be two “Best in Show” awards. One will be selected by the guest curator and the other by opening night attendees.     ABOUT THE CURATOR
    Tara LaPlante is a visual artist, founder of the multimedia events brand Futra, and business manager for the motion graphics studio Immanent. Originally from Wisconsin, she graduated from Montana State with a BFA in Painting in 2000, and studied Art History abroad at Maastricht University in The Netherlands. After school she moved back to the Midwest to continue her creative endeavors. In Minneapolis, she co-founded the art collective Offbeat Gallery and record label Timefog, which was home to many international techno artists.

    Tara’s relocation to Los Angeles in 2009 formed a change in her vision. The fusion of dance music culture and visual arts became the source of inspiration for Futra. Founded in 2012, this multimedia experience brand features DJ’s, producers, designers, performers, and visual artists through releases, podcasts, club events, and art spaces. Since 2015, the focus of Futra has altered to generating large-scale, concept-driven, multimedia gallery shows. Her personal art is colorful, abstract, and ranges from expressionistic to minimal in style. She currently works in painting, paper collage, and textile arts.

    As in past years, the call for art is open to all visual media. The selected works for C4W: 2017 reflect that inclusive approach and include video, installation, sculpture, photography, fiber, drawing, and painting. While there is no predetermined theme in the submission guidelines, the guest curator brings their own unique perspective and interpretation to the submitted works. This personalized stamp brings forward an underlying style that visually and conceptually connects the works in the exhibition. Coleman’s curatorial aesthetic has developed a show of bold colorful creation, favoring strong linework and figurative representation.

     

    C4W: 2017 includes both artists familiar to Gamut as well as many newcomers, creating a diverse group of eclectic styles. A notable difference for this year’s exhibit is the quantity included; Coleman wanted to include as much artwork as possible, selecting a total of 64 works. Of the 48 featured artists, only 13 have previously shown at Gamut, leaving roughly 70% of the exhibiting artists new to the gallery. CL Martin, Christopher Palbicki, Benjamin Sagmoe, Natalia Berglund, Shye, Christopher Sorenson, and Russ White are among the familiar names. Exciting newcomers include Scott Roper, whose surreal acrylic paintings are so expertly done they appear computer generated at first glance; Jeremy Jones, creating large-scale sculptures that reference domestic life as a father; and Jennifer Chilstrom, co-owner of local boutique Showroom and fashion brand Kindred Folk.

    For her first solo curation, Gamut Gallery co-owner Cassie Garner hand-selected a roster of national and local artists whose artwork highlights the bold energy and aesthetics of her personal taste. Using a 10” x 10” dimension constraint, each artist was asked to produce two pieces which speak to the collectable nature of tiny art and showcased their unique skill and artistic voice. Running the gamut of art styles, Sq2 features illustration, street art, graphic design, collage, abstract, photography, glitch, and mixed media. Unobtrusive yet not to be overlooked, compact art is the digestible alternative to its counterpart. Perfect for the apartment dweller or first time art buyer, tiny art begs to be collected, pairs well with others and carries a non-committal feel.

    Uniting Gamut’s past with present, this exhibit welcomes back a handful of artists in Gamut’s repertoire, including Yuya Negishi, Bunny Portia, Paige Guggemos, Erin Sayer and members of the Rogue Citizen artist collective. A co-curator of last year’s Guerrilla Girls-inspired feminist exhibition, Second Sex, Genie Castro’s work explores the challenges of life as an artist, wife, mother and woman through the use of bold monotypes, masterful strokes, layers of vibrant color and subtle detail which brim with kinetic energy. Formerly a Minneapolite, currently NY-based, Kyle Quinn first showed at Gamut during the group exhibition medley, C4W. With nods to photographer icons Nan Goldin and Robert Mapplethrope and a splash of 70’s gay erotica, Quinn’s work explores the subversive and intensely personal.

    Sq2 also features a few culturally known Gamut newcomers, including Booka B, Erica Parrot, Shön Troth, I.V. Hills, and Nicholas Harper, owner of Rogue Buddha Gallery. Best known for his portraits of women with elongated necks, Harper’s work examines magical realism and is heavily influenced by Russian and Orthodox Iconography, as well as literature and philosophy. Based in Las Vegas, street artist and zine writer, Shye creates anime-inspired illustrations and paintings. Whether using floral pastels, stark monochromatics, or captivating hues, her linework is sharp, leaning towards geometric shapes, patterns and mandala designs. Mash-ups both in concept and method, newcomer, Chris Larson’s illustrative works use digital, printmaking and bookbinding techniques to create queer meditations on beauty, identity, the environment and the esoteric.     C4W: 2016 Exhibit Finale featuring ARIADNE – closing reception of Gamut Gallery’s annual “C4W: Call 4 Works” exhibition curated by Lindsay Nohl, featuring a cross-venue premiere of Sean Connaughty’s short film “Is This Your’s?”; and a live performance from touring A/V duo ARIADNE, with an opening set from Michael Masaru Flora.
     
    For the closing reception of C4W: 2016, the gallery welcomes a special performance from ARIADNE, on tour as part of their ongoing “Observance” multimedia performance series, which was premiered at the 2016 CURRENTS New Media Festival in Santa Fe, NM in June. An A/V experimental sacred music duo from Brooklyn, New York, ARIADNE is comprised of Christine Lanx and Benjamin Forest. Incorporating modern chant-like vocalises, Anglican choral textures, and percussive soundscapes in dense multi-sensory layers, the duo flawlessly bridge the two worlds of ritualism of ancient spirituality and the secular iconography of the post-modern. Through their intricate musical compositions, striking digital visuals, ARIADNE create a captivating live performance.
     
    Observance is an audio/visual performance that draws from themes of ecstatic visions, the eternal feminine and dream symbolism depicted in a digital landscape of infinite environments and harsh textures. The performance system developed by ARIADNE for Observance explores the improvisatory interplay of music and visuals mediated by machine learning, physics simulation and motion analysis techniques.
     
    The evening will also feature the premiere of “Is This Yours?,” a short video piece from local artist Sean Connaughty that will be simultaneously released that night at 15 different venues in Minneapolis. Connaughty has been been working on a large environmental art project that is cleaning up Lake Hiawatha. The larger story is that he’s discovered that massive amounts of trash go down the storm sewers all over the city and end up in our lakes and the river. With installations at the Weisman and Form + Content gallery recently in conjunction with this project and several local and national press write-ups, this artful video is the perfect storytelling companion piece.
     
    Finally, this event will be the last chance to view “C4W: 2016” at Gamut Gallery. The exhibition features work from twenty-four artists out of a diverse pool of submissions. Hailing from a background of illustration and design, choosing work that communicated well was a top priority for guest curator Lindsay Nohl. The artists selected for the show represent confident creators whose artistic voices were strong, vibrant and intentional in the way they handled their media and craftsmanship. The exhibit highlights the concepts of readability and response, examining the mindset that you cannot separate the choices an artist makes in their approach to a piece from the final product. It’s all part of the work.
     
    ARIADNE is an A/V experimental sacred music duo from Brooklyn, New York comprised of Christine Lanx and Benjamin Forest. With a focus on interspersing the ritualism of ancient spirituality and the secular iconography of the post-modern, ARIADNE flawlessly bridge the two worlds through their intricate musical compositions, striking digital visuals, and captivating live performances.     MICHAEL MASARU FLORA is a Minneapolis based sound artist. His interest is in the exploration of sound via research and artistic practice. Through performance, installation, and recording he creates pieces that examine sonic morphology, spatialization, and human perception.
     
    SEAN CONNAUGHTY is a multi-media artist who lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. He currently is a professor of art at The University of Minnesota, where he has taught painting and drawing since 2000. Recently Mr. Connaughty has shown his work in Germany, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, New York City and Minneapolis. Recently he served as a jury member for the Omani Fine Art Society, in Muscat, Oman by invitation of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. He has also served as a juror for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “Assafeer Art Competition” an exhibition of Saudi Artists in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Sean Connaughty received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and his Masters of Fine Arts Degree from The Savannah College of Art and Design.

    For Gamut Gallery’s fourth annual “C4W: Call 4 Works” juried art exhibition, LGAL gallery founder and artist Lindsay Nohl has selected artwork from twenty-four artists out of a diverse pool of submissions. Hailing from a background of illustration and design, choosing work that communicated well was a top priority. The artists selected for the show represent confident creators whose artistic voices were strong, vibrant and intentional in the way they handled their media and craftsmanship.

    Though no theme is required in the original submission guidelines, each C4W curator has brought to the table their own unique perspective of and interpretation to the submitted works. This personalized stamp establishes an underlying theme or recurring motif that is a connective thread weaving together the exhibition. Throughout the selection process, Nohl was drawn to the elements of intention and communication, which can be seen in the clear and clever representation of emotions, stories and moments in the final chosen body of work. In each piece, the viewer can sense the personal behind the presented.

    “There’s always something very revealing about a personal body of work — it’s a self portrait without being a self portrait,” Nohl said about her selection. “Each work speaks volumes of the creator’s intentions, and their thoughtfulness in the execution of their themes. This body of work is a mix of very representational works amongst stylized illustrative work, and abstract pieces with collage and photography. I believe the works chosen are both strong pieces alone and within the context of the group exhibition.”

    Nohl is also the owner and lead designer of Paper Bicycle LLC, a product and surface design company in Minneapolis. Retailers such as Target, Barnes & Noble, Starbucks, Tazo Tea, Radisson, and Sephora, among others, have produced her work in the home, stationery, apparel, and gift markets.

    Nohl has published a number of projects including the Girls: Fact + Fiction, an eighty-page celebration of flesh-and-bone as well as fictional heroines, and In Place: Wish You Were Here, which focuses on the beauty of Earth’s most intriguing spaces. She also contributed to Rolemodels: The Battle for Vyk’ Tornaahl, an artist-deck and RPG fantasy card game; the Great Personality visual novel series; Dream Arcade, a 27-level platformer video game; and most recently, COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, retelling the stories of the night sky through the metaphors in the sky.

    Nohl is in her thirteenth year of teaching at MCAD in the Illustration Department. She has also taught at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the former College of Visual Arts. She has been a board member of the Twin Cities Licensing Group and a member of the Craft and Hobby Association and AIGA.

    MODWELL
    Zach Bleier aka Modwell is a 5+ year electronic music producer and performer. He passionately uses his love and knowledge of sound to communicate emotions and energy, and moves people on the dance floor. Deeply dedicated to his craft, he delivers a powerful genre-bending live performance where he creates all original music on the fly using synthesizers and other analog hardware.
