Complimenting our current exhibition, Art Is For Everyone, Gamut’s summer pop-up Makers Market has returned to Elliot Park! To commemorate a decade of operating within the Twin Cities arts community, we’ve invited ten creators that have helped tell our story to be part of it once again. As one of the season’s most popular events, our July market will feature jewelry, paintings, pottery, buttons, clothing, sassy cross-stitch, body care, naturalsoap and more!

The core of Gamut’s philosophy is the sincere belief that art fosters community and that everyone should have access to becoming a collector. With that mission in mind, we are constantly working to reach new audiences that might not have previously known how welcome they are in gallery spaces. Knowing that many of our visitors have begun their journey collecting art with us here at Gamut is such an incredible honor that we feel so lucky to be a part of. Over the last ten years, we’ve watched it unfold across 103 exhibitions, showcasing innovative and accessible media, content, and styles from 880 represented artists.

As always without you, there would be no us! Thank you for your years of support & we hope to see you on Saturday, July 9th to celebrate!

With so much to celebrate this year, Gamut’s 10th annual holiday market Raging Art On (RAO) is back!  We’re bursting at the seams with locally sourced art, helping you answer that age old question: what do you get the person that has everything? The gallery is transformed, filled from floor-to-ceiling with paintings, fiber art, prints, jewelry, sculptures, and stocking stuffers to choose from. You’ll never find yourself agonizing over holiday shopping again!

Since the inception of Raging Art On in 2011, we have hand selected the artists, but leave the rest up to them!  In doing so, they choose their “best of the best” artworks spanning all sizes & price points creating the full Gamut of work. The gallery will feature 25 NEW artists alongside familiar names that we have shown throughout the years. Our holiday pop-up shop is the only time of the year where you can take your new found love off the wall & go home with them that same day!

Members of the gallery are invited to get a preview of the festivities on Wednesday December 1st from 5pm–9pm, followed by three weeks of in person shopping open to the public. Snowed in? We’ve got you covered. RAO will be shoppable again this year on gamutgallerympls.com/shop so that you can support your community consciously from the comfort of your home (jammies and cocoa optional). For those who fall in love with a piece of art before the holidays but feel guilty about making that big purchase will have a chance to circle back via the online shop thru January 10th!

While others at the office party are unwrapping mass-produced gifts bought from chain stores, you know that sustainability is the true gift that keeps on giving. Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Gifts for sale at this cash-n-carry event are handmade locally and are in harmony with those values. In 2021, more than ever, let our artists be your elves and continue to support our vibrant community of local artists and makers.[/bscolumns]

The event that kicked off Gamut’s inception is back for the 8th year in a row! Bigger & better than previous years, Raging Art On (RAO) holiday shop will be open for 3 weeks, featuring over 20 new artists, and will include a guaranteed party with extended hours. In addition to extended hours, each Saturday evening will spotlight different musical genres, including House, Hip-Hop and Funk. Local DJ’s, 88project & Nancy Cheng, Sammy Figz & Keith Millions, and Bobby Kahn & Dj Dandy will keep you movin’ and groovin’ while exploring the gallery for gifts from over 40 artists.

An “uncurated” holiday makers market in a gallery setting, Raging Art On provides a unique, consumer-conscious experience that allows any adventurous shopper to find the perfect gift for anyone on their shopping list! With the exception of selecting the participants, Gamut leaves the rest up to the local artists to decide the amount of work they show and where to show it. What results is a gallery packed from floor to ceiling with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Gifts for sale at this cash-n-carry event are handmade locally and are in harmony with the values of those concerned by mainstream holiday effects on our environment and our world — landfills, factory and shipping-caused pollution, issues of outsourcing and fair trade, consumer culture, etc. Raging Art On offers a place to join like-minded people together through art, music, and conversation.

It is “uncurated” in the sense that, aside from selecting who participates, the rest is left entirely up to the artists: what artwork to bring, how much to bring, and where it is hung. What results is a gallery packed to the brim with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

For the finale of Black Magik Woman IV, Gamut Gallery Director Cassie Garner has invited three artists who have worked with team leads behind the scenes to make Black Magik Woman happen and newcomer Jade Huynh. Tierney Houdek aka Thraxis Threads is the seamstress behind Jade Patrick’s “Breaking Glass” series. Tamiko’s French work is visible through Vie Boheme’s spiritually-infused photography collection. Rachel Andrzejewski’s creations can be seen in Gamut’s gift shop as well as the floral crown photographed in the “Breaking Glass” series. Finally, Huynh will be doing a co-lab with Thraxis Threads and creating original floral installation pieces in correlation with the current exhibition.

    ABOUT THE ARTISTS
    TIERNEY HOUDEK – Thraxis Threads
A Minneapolis-based fashion designer with nearly two decades of experience. She began sewing at age 10 and by the time she was in high school was selling her original garments at local boutiques. In 2012 she worked at Sassy Knitwear, where sustainable fabrics are dyed in-house and garments are designed, cut, sewn, and sold entirely out of her South Minneapolis studio. Tierney was already incorporating recycled materials into her own designs and this experience furthered her drive to create ethically made clothing. That mindset is now the cornerstone to her own clothing company – Thraxis. She has done professional costuming for stage performers including Tickle Torture, live theater, and editorial photoshoots. The launch of Thraxis is a dream come true for Tierney.

JADE HUYHN – Origami by Jade
Practicing Origami professionally was not something that was anticipated for my future. I originally had went to Culinary School, and cooked as a pastry chef for seven years. There is a great passion for being able to create delicate items during intense work conditions, and I thought that was what I would do forever. I then decided to continue a hobby I had always practiced as a child, Origami. The last two years of my pastry career was when I realized I had a greater love for the art of paper folding. I am grateful for all the support during this journey to become the best artist I can be.

    RACHEL ANDRZEJEWSKI – Rachel Alicia
A multi-media installation artist living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Illustration, hand lettering, printmaking, living plant and cut green installations are some of her many practices that come together to create her artwork. Air plants, succulents, and cut floral greens are among her favorite materials to work with as of late, as she explores the concept of necessity of care for the artwork. Previous installations have been built around community and viewer interaction and collaboration. Rachel completed her B.A. in studio art at Bethel University, and worked as Gallery Manager for the last three years at Golden Rule Collective in Excelsior, MN. In 2018 she launched a new home organization and installation company “Resolutionary,” and is currently Shop Manager at the Aldrich Tattoo Parlour.

    TAMIKO FRENCH – SoulSpeak Expressions
As a Dancer/Choreographer born and raised in Minneapolis, she always been attracted to new avenues of expression. Seven years ago when she searched for the perfect pair of earrings and could not satisfy her craving for fresh new design, she stepped into her new avenue of expression and it became a weekly escape from her stressful life of duality. As a childhood collector of minerals and crystals, her love for earth sciences brought her to merge them into her work and embrace wire wrapping. Creating work that speaks through vibration and resonates with the physical and spiritual bodies has become the center of her work. Tamiko’s current collection incorporates a level of mystique and fantasy inside of jewelry, crowns, accessories, wands, and walking sticks. She created SoulSpeak Expressions to be the unique voice of your soul.

    TRUNK SHOW
    THURSDAY JUNE 21, 6-10PM
    $5 or FREE for Members
    DJ set by BAARDmusic

    ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Magik Woman IV will feature collaborative works from 12 creative teams, all new to the project, that tackle social issues that individuals deal with today – personally, socially and/or globally. Each team includes a creative lead, a muse, and a visual artist, though the distinctions can blur to include others, collaboratively drawing inspiration to create a conceptual vision.

Diversity is very important to this project and continues to help evolve what this project looks like. Black Magik Woman hopes to continue to push feminism in a positive way and help develop new standards for women, women-identified, femme and non-binary individuals; changing how we exist and are perceived in this world. In the reality of a new president who has proven to have crude and out-of-date views on what being a woman looks like today, it is very important that Black Magik Woman get its message out. This year’s event could prove to be a very emotional and life-changing event for many of us. Alone we are a force; together we are THE force to be reckoned with. Our community is strong and thriving and full of talented and amazing straight, queer, femme, non-binary and feminist individuals.

Pro Women doesn’t mean Anti Men. All are welcome here.

Comments Off on Sq2 [Squared] :100 New works each 10″x10″

    [bscolumns class=”one_half”]

FEATURED ARTISTS: Alex Poepping, Alexandra Motz, Amelia LeBarron, Ana Taylor, Andres Guzman, Barret Lee, Brett Early, Biafra, Blaster, Booka B, Boxy Mouse, Brian Matthew Hart, Bunny Portia, Cassie Garner, Chris Larson, Christopher Sorenson, Dalsen, Dana Schmakel, Derek Meier, Donny Gettinger, Erica Parrott, Genie Castro, Impeach, I.V. Hills, Jade Patrick, Jamie Owens, Jaye McGilvrey, Jane Wunrow, Jesse Aylsworth, Kyle Quinn, Lindsee Bee, Lizardman, Miles Taylor, Natalia Berglund, Nate Vincent Szklarski, Neal Breton, Nicholas Harper, Nicholas Knutson, Medusa, Paige Guggemos, Phaedra Odelle, Repo, Ry Johnson, Ryan Hughes, Shye, stace of spades, Tierney Houdek, Therd, Wundr and Yuya Negishi

For her first solo curation, Gamut Gallery co-owner Cassie Garner hand-selected a roster of national and local artists whose artwork highlights the bold energy and aesthetics of her personal taste. Using a 10” x 10” dimension constraint, each artist was asked to produce two pieces which speak to the collectable nature of tiny art and showcased their unique skill and artistic voice. Running the gamut of art styles, Sq2 features illustration, street art, graphic design, collage, abstract, photography, glitch, and mixed media. Unobtrusive yet not to be overlooked, compact art is the digestible alternative to its counterpart. Perfect for the apartment dweller or first time art buyer, tiny art begs to be collected, pairs well with others and carries a non-committal feel.

Uniting Gamut’s past with present, this exhibit welcomes back a handful of artists in Gamut’s repertoire, including Yuya Negishi, Bunny Portia, Paige Guggemos, Erin Sayer and members of the Rogue Citizen artist collective. A co-curator of last year’s Guerrilla Girls-inspired feminist exhibition, Second Sex, Genie Castro’s work explores the challenges of life as an artist, wife, mother and woman through the use of bold monotypes, masterful strokes, layers of vibrant color and subtle detail which brim with kinetic energy. Formerly a Minneapolite, currently NY-based, Kyle Quinn first showed at Gamut during the group exhibition medley, C4W. With nods to photographer icons Nan Goldin and Robert Mapplethrope and a splash of 70’s gay erotica, Quinn’s work explores the subversive and intensely personal.

Sq2 also features a few culturally known Gamut newcomers, including Booka B, Erica Parrot, Shön Troth, I.V. Hills, and Nicholas Harper, owner of Rogue Buddha Gallery. Best known for his portraits of women with elongated necks, Harper’s work examines magical realism and is heavily influenced by Russian and Orthodox Iconography, as well as literature and philosophy. Based in Las Vegas, street artist and zine writer, Shye creates anime-inspired illustrations and paintings. Whether using floral pastels, stark monochromatics, or captivating hues, her linework is sharp, leaning towards geometric shapes, patterns and mandala designs. Mash-ups both in concept and method, newcomer, Chris Larson’s illustrative works use digital, printmaking and bookbinding techniques to create queer meditations on beauty, identity, the environment and the esoteric. Hosted by local personality Christiaan “Bacon” Tarbox, who will be celebrating his birthday (woot! woot!) with a food and toy drive to Second Harvest Heartland and Toys-for-Tots. How does it work? Bring a nonperishable food item or a new, unwrapped toy to be entered for a chance to win door prizes donated by Blick Art Supplies. Music from DJ’s Mike Moilanen, Keith Millions, Aaron Brooks, and Ken Hannigan…and PBR! So, come for the art – and stay for the party. Co-sponsored by: Pabst Blue Ribbon and Blick Art Materials

No one system can reproduce all colors in the spectrum, and no one artist can create an entire aesthetic in one art piece. This show will feature art that crosses the continuum of possibilities; the collective will illustrate the Gamut. True to the spirit of the Gamut, this show displays dynamic content and style from a diverse group of local artists, creatively tied together through the use of color.
