Tickets are only $20 with all proceeds going directly to supporting Yuya Negishi’s journey to recovery and to celebrate his priceless contribution to Gamut Gallery’s heart and the wider community. Let’s rally together for an artist who has given us so much beauty and inspiration. 

    Celebrating the talent of a beloved artist and muralist in the Twin Cities community, Yuya Negishi’s work is a playful blend of classical Japanese calligraphy and SUMI techniques with vibrant Japanese pop culture imagery like koi, dragons, and Buddhas, infused with street-art influences from his time in urban America. His artwork is not just a feast for the eyes; it’s an expression of cultural heritage, wonder, and amusement, resonating with the energy of those around him. Many have experienced the magic firsthand during Yuya’s live painting at events and his murals across Minneapolis.

    Yuya faced a challenging health crisis last year, leaving him unable to work for over 9 months. But his determination and spirit are unwavering, and he’s now on the path to reclamation, slowly returning to his artistic journey. Yuya needs the love and support of his loyal friends and community, which is why we’re coming together to show him just how much he means to us. Let’s shine our light on him, just like he has on our city! Yuya’s captivating artworks will fill the gallery and this is an opportunity to be immersed in his experiential LED light installations featuring more than 8500 bulbs that will transport your senses to the magical world of Yuya-Town. All of Yuya’s works will be for sale, with proceeds being donated directly to Yuya to help with his recovery. Don’t miss this chance to be part of something truly special!

    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Yuya Negishi is a Japanese visual artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was born in Showa Village, Gunma. Yuya draws artistic inspiration from the memories and sensations of growing up in the Japanese countryside, where he would roam “like a hidden Ninja” exploring the woods, temples and mountain tops of the breath-taking Gunma region. Since relocating to Minneapolis in 2010, Yuya has been a prolific member of the city’s artistic community, involving himself in a wide range of projects. He teaches Japanese artistic styles to students in grade school through college and participates in public art projects, murals, frequently exhibits work, and has a wide portfolio of commissioned work. He also does illustrations and often performs at live paintings events. His work combines his extensive background in the classical Japanese techniques of calligraphy and SUMI with Japanese pop culture images such as koi, dragons and Buddhas, and street-art techniques influenced by his years in urban America.

    After 11 years we can’t wait to celebrate the amazing community that defines this place we call Gamut Gallery! It wouldn’t be a summer party without live painting and music in the courtyard, this year we will be featuring Yuya Negishi PLUS, there will be ten-minute portrait sessions made available by Daughters and Suns. We are welcoming some of our favorite Twin Cities house DJs; Mama Sauce, MPLS HOUSE, Jake Encinas & GirlE to create the celebration buzz!

    Setting the scene for our celebration is Kaleidoskull’s latest series of works featured in the Exoskeleton exhibit. Originally introduced at the Sound of Art Exhibition in New York over 15 years ago, Monty Montgomery & Tony Philippou merged their unique artistic styles into Kaleidoskull, blending figurative realism and abstract geometry. Each figure in their paintings and drawings is combined with an insect as a form of armor and anonymity. Monty and Tony have connected with the Twin Cities community through their world of imagination, inspiring the audience to feel empowered and engaged with the world they have created.

    There’s no place quite like Gamut Gallery, where people “come for the art, and stay for the party.” For more than a decade, Gamut has had the support of an engaging community, establishing a place where art, music, performance, and collaboration are all connected. We have made a name for ourselves in the Twin Cities art scene as an accessible gallery, showing affordable artwork with a welcoming attitude. We remain as dedicated as we were on Day One to continuing our tradition of serving as a cultural and social hub, focused on programming that engages and immerses our audience. Showing the work of over 930 local, national, and international artists, hosted over 270 exhibits and creative social events, and gained the support of over 280 members!

    Featured Artists
    Tony Philippou was born in The Bronx, NY and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He currently lives and teaches in Orlando, Florida. He has been a Fine-Artist for over 20 years, but originally started out as a freelance illustrator and designer in NY, Tony blended his communication and design skill set with his love for Painting. Tony explores themes of urban decay, fashion, societal trends, and contemporary subjects with aesthetic techniques inspired by Renaissance portraiture, Graffiti, and Fantasy Illustration.

    Monty Montgomery was born and raised in Virginia and earned his BFA from Longwood University in 1998. He currently lives in San Diego, Ca. Monty began exhibiting his work professionally in 2002. In 2008 Montgomery launched the next chapter of his career by moving to a new studio in San Diego, CA. In recent years he has begun focusing on collaborative projects with other artists that play with the juxtaposition of disparate styles with the goal of stretching the boundaries of what each artist does individually. The first in 2012 was the “Kreashun Project” with J Feather and in 2016 he launched the “Kaleidoskull Project” with Tony Philippou. Both of these ongoing collaborations continue to evolve as does his personal work, each feeding off the other.

    Yuya Negishi is an artist from Japan. Currently living in Minneapolis MN he is mural-ing the cityscape with Yuyart! A fun combination of SUMI painting, calligraphy, and other classical Japanese mediums and motifs; his work is an expression of cultural heritage, wonder, and amusement.

    Lisa Luck aka Daughter and Suns is a contemporary fine artist, illustrator and designer specializing in hand-drawn illustration graphics. She does personal commissions for her clients that capture an essence only she can see.

    MPLSART Sketchbook Project – MPLSART and Gamut Gallery present the MPLSART Sketchbook Project Exhibition, exhibiting over 30 new original works from local artists featured in the 2021 project.

    We have partnered up with MPLSART once again for the second iteration of the MPLSART Sketchbook Project Exhibition. When the 2021 sketchbooks were near the end of their travels, MPLSART and Gamut Gallery connected again to host a brilliant exhibit to showcase the five original sketchbooks and new works from half of the artists contributing to the traveling project. 

    Given the magnitude of artists and limited wall space, an open call was sent to all 70 artists and the first 35 to respond would have the opportunity to showcase their original work in the exhibition. The roster filled up with established and emerging artists, creating an eclectic exhibition featuring muralists, studio artists, street artists, graphic novelists, collage artists, and more. Gamut attendees may recognize familiar names that have been on exhibit at Gamut in the past and can look forward to 18 new artists who will be exhibiting their work in the gallery for the first time. 

    The exhibition has no defined theme, only a set of guidelines – works had to be new originals and available for under $500. In addition to featuring 35 original works, the exhibition will also be an opportunity to see the five original sketchbooks first-hand before going to auction at St. Paul based Revere Auctions this May.[/bscolumns][bscolumns class=”one_half_last_clear”]

    The talk art talk chain consists of curator Blaine Garrett and artists Samuel Fleming, Danielle Pebbles, Melissa Lee Sisk, and Piotr Szyhalski. This is not your typical artist talk. This talk will be a Q&A Chain — a method where Blaine Garrett, of MPLSART, will select a piece that intrigues him and ask the artists a couple of questions.     The 2021 MPLSART Sketchbook Project is a unique survey of the Twin Cities visual arts community during another challenging year. Started in 2020 as a way to connect and support artists during the pandemic, the 2021 project is the second iteration bringing together a whole new set of amazing Twin Cities artists. Throughout 2021, 70 local artists contributed 120 original works to a series of five traveling sketchbooks. The project will be compiled into a beautiful limited edition book available for presale in March 2022 and the five original sketchbooks will be put up for auction with all net proceeds being divided among the 70 participating artists. Bigger & better than previous years, Raging Art On (RAO) holiday shop will be open for 3 weeks, featuring over 20 new artists, and will include a guaranteed party with extended hours. In addition to extended hours, each Saturday evening will spotlight different musical genres, including House, Hip-Hop and Funk. Local DJ’s, 88project & Nancy Cheng, Sammy Figz & Keith Millions, and Bobby Kahn & Dj Dandy will keep you movin’ and groovin’ while exploring the gallery for gifts from over 40 artists.

    The three main contributing artists to the “7 Warrior Women” exhibition will join together to discuss their inspirations and collaborative process.

    Pushing the boundaries of her technique and subject matter, Kristi Abbott led a group of local artists to create a collection of works that center around seven imagined and embodied figures—women from each of the Earth’s seven continents. These mystical and bold feminine characters represent the strength and energy of women around the world and across time. Imagined through costumes, photographs, paintings, world maps, and other elements, carry certain cultural markers distinctive to their geography and heritage, but their power and beauty speak universally to the essence of the feminine.

    Abbott, a native to Australia, carefully forms intricate portraits out of varying types and textures of paper for her collage work. Her portraits are often embedded with hidden images, “small secrets” relating back to some part of the personality or biography of the individual, unlocking their story one detail at a time.

    Negishi, a Japanese mural artist who works with traditional and contemporary imageries, created the spray painted backdrops for each piece, as well as several smaller complimentary pieces that will be presented alongside the seven warriors.

    Epperson is a tattoo artist, painter, and maker, who contributed to the exhibition through her tattoo-like body paintings adorning each warrior, and created the headdresses and face paint worn by several of the women. Negishi and Epperson work in a similar way to Abbott, drawing on narrative and conducting thorough research that serves to inform their flowing, energetic images.[/bscolumns]

    Gamut Gallery is pleased to announce a collaborative exhibition, 7 Warrior Women, produced by artist Kristi Abbott opening on March 31, 2018.

Epperson is a tattoo artist, painter, and maker, who contributed to the exhibition through her tattoo-like body paintings adorning each warrior, and created the headdresses and face paint worn by several of the women.

Kern, a fine art photographer, skillfully captured the essence of strength in the seven warrior women who were directed by Abbott at a recent photo shoot for the project, while Kada translated Abbott’s concepts through makeup and body paint containing iconic imagery on several of the women for the shoot. Those images served as a building block in the creation of the collages, one of the many layers and steps in a thoughtfully choreographed process. The final result is a powerful body of work that illustrates Abbott’s exceptional talent with this dynamic and fresh approach to collage art and collaboration.

    For her first solo curation, Gamut Gallery co-owner Cassie Garner hand-selected a roster of national and local artists whose artwork highlights the bold energy and aesthetics of her personal taste. Using a 10” x 10” dimension constraint, each artist was asked to produce two pieces which speak to the collectable nature of tiny art and showcased their unique skill and artistic voice. Running the gamut of art styles, Sq2 features illustration, street art, graphic design, collage, abstract, photography, glitch, and mixed media. Unobtrusive yet not to be overlooked, compact art is the digestible alternative to its counterpart. Perfect for the apartment dweller or first time art buyer, tiny art begs to be collected, pairs well with others and carries a non-committal feel.

    Uniting Gamut’s past with present, this exhibit welcomes back a handful of artists in Gamut’s repertoire, including Yuya Negishi, Bunny Portia, Paige Guggemos, Erin Sayer and members of the Rogue Citizen artist collective. A co-curator of last year’s Guerrilla Girls-inspired feminist exhibition, Second Sex, Genie Castro’s work explores the challenges of life as an artist, wife, mother and woman through the use of bold monotypes, masterful strokes, layers of vibrant color and subtle detail which brim with kinetic energy. Formerly a Minneapolite, currently NY-based, Kyle Quinn first showed at Gamut during the group exhibition medley, C4W. With nods to photographer icons Nan Goldin and Robert Mapplethrope and a splash of 70’s gay erotica, Quinn’s work explores the subversive and intensely personal.

    Sq2 also features a few culturally known Gamut newcomers, including Booka B, Erica Parrot, Shön Troth, I.V. Hills, and Nicholas Harper, owner of Rogue Buddha Gallery. Best known for his portraits of women with elongated necks, Harper’s work examines magical realism and is heavily influenced by Russian and Orthodox Iconography, as well as literature and philosophy. Based in Las Vegas, street artist and zine writer, Shye creates anime-inspired illustrations and paintings. Whether using floral pastels, stark monochromatics, or captivating hues, her linework is sharp, leaning towards geometric shapes, patterns and mandala designs. Mash-ups both in concept and method, newcomer, Chris Larson’s illustrative works use digital, printmaking and bookbinding techniques to create queer meditations on beauty, identity, the environment and the esoteric.     A holiday sale in a gallery setting, Gamut Gallery provides a fun-filled, consumer conscious alternative to chain stores and mass mall shopping with the 6th annual shopping event, Raging Art On. Described as an “art-happening meets holiday party meets pop-up boutique,” an “uncurated” art experience awaits the adventurous shopper on the hunt for the perfect gift for the artist, musician, writer or other creative maker on their holiday season shopping list. This year, Gamut has extended the annual sale to include an additional day, which means five days, extra hours of epic rummaging and, of course, more time to enjoy the party. We’ve hand-selected the 50+ local artists involved, but they decide what to show and where to show it. What results is a gallery packed from floor to ceiling with paintings, photography, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

    The five-day-long event will see performances from DJs James Patrick, Modwell, Danny Sigelman, Juleana Enright, Bobby Kahn, Tony “Etones” Larson, Jesse Lingenfelter, and The Headspace Collective. Come for the art; stay for the party.

    Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Gifts for sale at this event are handmade locally and are in harmony with the values of those concerned by mainstream holiday effects on our environment and our world — landfills, factory and shipping-caused pollution, issues of outsourcing and fair trade, consumer culture, etc. Raging Art On offers a place to join like-minded people together through art, music, performance and conversation.

    Born in ­a small farming community in the mountains beyond Tokyo, Minneapolis-based artist Yuya Negishi’s artwork is a cultural amalgamation. Combining classical Japanese techniques of calligraphy and SUMI with Japanese pop culture images, his creations display tactile street art techniques while adhering to a whimsical philosophy of art and life. Through their lively movement and vivid hues, Negishi’s paintings embrace a capricious energy fueled by fluidity. Using recurring images, like koi fish who embody that fluidity, Negishi captures the ebb and flow of the natural world around him, letting the extant sensations of the present and the past merge. His paintings allow for a vibrant visual experience of an emotional connection to the animal kingdom, the spiritual realm and to landscape. Blending traditional Japanese roots with his free-spirited “go with flow” ethos, Negishi’s work explores the playfulness of art and examines his own fluid spirit through vibrant outbursts.

    Yuya Negishi is hot on the heels of assisting to create one of the most buzzed about murals of recent years – the towering kaleidoscopic portrait of Bob Dylan in downtown Minneapolis. His wide range of community-driven projects – live paintings and murals work, including a recent interactive mural at the Walker Art Center – are testaments to his exceptional eye for detail in motion and experience working with these au courant art mediums. His solo show at Gamut Gallery will harness his own desire for fluidity as well as highlight the gallery’s own affinity to adapt. This winter, Negishi will be journeying home to Japan for on a interdermintent hiatus, marking this exhibit as the last chance to view his works in a gallery setting in Minneapolis during 2015.

    The opening reception for Fluidity is the inaugural exhibition in Gamut Gallery’s new home in Elliot Park and doubles as the official grand opening. Festivities will include an impermanent outdoor mandala installation by Krista Beier and music by DJ CZU and DJ Seth, plus sake and refreshments sponsored by Fujiya, Origami and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Yuya Negishi is a Japanese visual artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was born in Showa Village, Gunma. Yuya draws artistic inspiration from the memories and sensations of growing up in the Japanese countryside, where he would roam “like a hidden Ninja” exploring the woods, temples and mountain tops of the breath-taking Gunma region. Since relocating to Minneapolis in 2010, Yuya has been a prolific member of the city’s artistic community, involving himself in a wide range of projects. He teaches Japanese artistic styles to students in grade school through college and participates in public art projects, murals, frequently exhibits work, and has a wide portfolio of commissioned work. He also does illustrations and often performs at live paintings events. His work combines his extensive background in the classical Japanese techniques of calligraphy and SUMI with Japanese pop culture images such as koi, dragons and Buddhas, and street-art techniques influenced by his years in urban America. www.yuyart.com
