  1. Cracked Pavement

FEATURED ARTISTS: Oskar Barrett, Aaron Christensen, Kevin Horn, Jeremy Lindvig, Max Mateikis, Jeremiah Munn, Jamie Owens, Ben Petersen, Alex Sveda, Dylan Strait and more.

Driven by a handful of small skate shops, a plethora of independent skateboard films, thrilling private indoor ramps, and most importantly, packs of friends, the Twin Cities skateboarding community is convincing in its sincerity and unapologetic for its candidness. The obstacles that keep the Minnesota skateboarding scene somewhat unknown are the same factors that spur an earnest, DIY-forward, creative community.

With the X-Games once again taking Minneapolis by storm, it is important to recognize the traditionally remote nature of Twin Cities skateboarding. In contrast to coastal metros, Minneapolis and St. Paul rarely receive branding dollars, billboards, or national ad campaigns. Aside from the few local skate shop owners and the occasional sponsored skater, in the Twin Cities, the skating industry can appear almost as a mirage, vicariously felt through Instagram feeds and the pages of Thrasher Magazine.

It is easy to understand why the Twin Cities does not receive more widespread acclaim in the skating world. For at least four months out of the year, a slippery, frigid, white fluff carpets the city streets. Due to the inevitable clockwork of freezing and thawing in cold weather, many acclaimed skate spots are no longer feasible because of ever cracking pavement, with the ones remaining skatable arguably less than ideal. Thanks to geographic destiny, any Twin Cities-based curious skaters or companies would have to cross the Dakotas, Illinois, or Wisconsin to reach refuge from the snow. The likely reason for the current outsider interest in Minneapolis is due to a controversial building of the US Bank Stadium, which muddles the excitement around national attention. When it comes to skateboarding in the Twin Cities, nothing is easy, but no skater will ever tell you that.

Cracked Pavement is an exhibition featuring a mere handful of the independent creative minds cultivated within the skateboard scene. Dylan Strait preserves grotesque 80s skate punk traditions, creating line intensive ink-wash illustrations of decaying faces, empty beer cans, and rotting flesh. Kevin Horn utilizes an in-depth understanding of capturing light, shadow and motion, bringing a commercial industry skill set and fine art nuance to skateboard photography. Jeremy Lindvig recalls skateboards of his youth by painstakingly restoring vintage decks through countless hours of repairing wood and layered silk screening. Many different mediums, methods and means are used to produce the artwork exhibited, all speaking to and celebrating the vibrancy of the Twin Cities skateboarding community.

  3. 7 Warrior Women

Comments Off on 7 Warrior Women

    [bscolumns class=”one_half”]

Gamut Gallery is pleased to announce a collaborative exhibition, 7 Warrior Women, produced by artist Kristi Abbott opening on March 31, 2018.

Inspired to push the boundaries of her technique and subject matter, Abbott led a group of local artists to create a collection of works that center around seven imagined and embodied figures—women from each of the Earth’s seven continents. These mystical and bold feminine characters represent the strength and energy of women around the world and across time. These figures, imagined through costume elements, photographs, paintings, world maps, and other elements, carry certain cultural markers distinctive to their geography and heritage, but their power and beauty speak universally to the essence of the feminine.

Abbott, a native to Australia, carefully forms intricate portraits out of varying types and textures of paper for her collage work. Her portraits are often embedded with hidden images, “small secrets” relating back to some part of the personality or biography of the individual, unlocking their story one detail at a time. Contributing artists include Yuya Negishi, Sarah Epperson, RJ Kern, Kada of Artful Eclectic, and six local models. Negishi, a Japanese mural artist who works with traditional and contemporary imageries, created the spray painted backdrops for each piece, as well as several smaller complimentary pieces that will be presented alongside the seven warriors. Epperson is a tattoo artist, painter, and maker, who contributed to the exhibition through her tattoo-like body paintings adorning each warrior, and created the headdresses and face paint worn by several of the women.

Negishi and Epperson work in a similar way to Abbott, drawing on narrative and conducting thorough research that serves to inform their flowing, energetic images. Kern, a fine art photographer, skillfully captured the essence of strength in the seven warrior women who were directed by Abbott at a recent photo shoot for the project, while Kada translated Abbott’s concepts through makeup and body paint containing iconic imagery on several of the women for the shoot. Those images served as a building block in the creation of the collages, one of the many layers and steps in a thoughtfully choreographed process. The final result is a powerful body of work that illustrates Abbott’s exceptional talent with this dynamic and fresh approach to collage art and collaboration.

  4. Seeing Voices: Artist Talk & Exhibit Finale

    [bscolumns class=”one_half”]

As a culmination of her solo exhibit #SeeingVoices, join us for an artist talk with Jane Wunrow in conversation with Gamut Gallery Assistant Allie Mickle for a discussion of her work. The artist will provide context for her seemingly abstract compositions, going into further detail about her artistic inspirations, her life as an artist, and her intricate processes.

Later that evening, help us celebrate #SeeingVoices one final time with an exhibit finale 7-10pm featuring a DJ set from Gerardo Morado, known under the moniker 88project. Primarily exploring house music sets, 88project has always had a big love for music since his early years and was always driven by underground experimentations, an idea that can into fruition with he discovered electronic music. At age 17 he began to experiment with the art of mixing and soon began to make a name for himself playing in major clubs and cities in the northern Mexican and Midwest regions.

    ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
With her first solo show, Jane Wunrow presents works that are directly influenced by specific dreams or migraine aura she experiences, particularly those that surface subconscious fears, pains, or perceptions. While creating, Wunrow puts herself back into that mental headspace and taps into the emotions that she felt in that dream state, imbuing her works with raw feeling. “Seeing Voices” places Wunrow’s dreams and visual perceptions into the physical realm.

    ABOUT 88 Project

  5. Spit Shade

    Comments Off on Spit Shade

[bscolumns class=”one_half”]An exhibit of local & national tattoo artists curated by Lindsee Boyer and Nate Vincent Szklarski. Opening night doubles as official opening for the Minneapolis Tattoo Arts Convention.

FEATURED ARTISTS: Adam Underwood, Alex Gregory, Andrew Travis, Anthony Elliott II, Bleach, Bradley Trotter, Cody Goins, Charlie Forbes, Chris Chapman, Chris Dobransky, Chris Krapohl, Collin Rigsby, Daniel Jimenez, Dave Tieman, Emmanuel Mendoza, Frog, Gabby Maravelas, Garrett Rautio, Isaac Brethauer, J. Adams, Jack Gribble, Jamie Thomas, Jason Walstrom, Jeremiah Kanne, Jeremy Calverley, Jesse Heike, Jessie McNally, Joseph Christensen, Joshua Strand, Julie Freeland, Kyle Mack,Kyle Skyer, Lindsee Bee, Marina Berry, Marissa Wunders, Poohki, Matt Zins, Max VK, Mike Grant, Nate Vincent Szklarski, Nick  Hams, Reid Gosmire, Richard Hudson, Ryan “Opie” Mueller, Sampson Hurley, Simeon Nelson, Spencer Hodgson, Taylor Dees, Troy Timple, Wayne Evans.

An art form with an over 1,000 year history, tattooing is slowly losing the rebellion stigma that it previously held, with roughly one in five Americans now claiming one. Through changing social norms powered in part by the online era and a new generation of tattoo consumers, the art form is slowly gaining acknowledgement within fine-art communities. Partnering with local Minneapolis tattoo artists Lindsee Boyer of Bee Ink and Nate Vincent Szklarski of Saint Sabrina’s, Gamut Gallery presents Spit Shade, an exhibit of original artwork created by tattoo artists.

The initial idea for Spit Shade was to create an exhibition space reminiscent of a tattoo shop waiting area covered with flash designs. While affinity for those classic designs is in some ways a prerequisite for this line of work, most tattoo artists find their way into tattooing through an early interest in the arts and continue their individual art practice outside the shop. As planning progressed, the curators decided to broaden the scope of the exhibit and encourage tattoo artists to explore other media and inspirations. As stated by Nate, “as a tattooer I know that I love to create body art for people, but at the end of the day nothing feels more passionate than putting down the machine and picking up a brush and creating something that ultimately is mine from start to finish.” While many of the artworks exhibited will retain the spirit of tattoo art, the organizers are excited to see what experiments and innovations will be created.

Spit Shade provides an opportunity to not only bring the robust and varied Minnesota tattoo community together, but also to include artists from other states who will be coming to town for the annual Minneapolis Tattoo Arts Convention. Opening night of the exhibit will double as the official opening party for the convention and will feature DJ No Pants, playing music from the likes of the Kinks and other 1960’s, & 70’s bands & hip-hop hits from the 90’s

FEATURED ARTISTS: Benja Wuest, Blaine Garrett, Brook Thompson, CL Martin, Cory Favre, Dani Frame, Drake Johnson, Erik Tiberius Lervold, Jacob Eidem, James Kloiber, Jeff Bockenhauer, Jesse Golfis, Jesse Quam, Joe Rheault, Kurtis Johnson, Leslie Barlow, Mark Dean, Matt Ihle, Russ White, Sean Lynch

In A Gallery Far, Far Away… presents a celebration of Star Wars, paying homage to the franchise while including a variety of artists from different backgrounds working in various media, showcasing that Star Wars is not defined by George Lucas or Disney, but belongs to the fans. This exhibit will be on display for three days only with free viewing during our regular weekly hours (Thur-Sat 1-7pm), and will culminate with a proper party Saturday, December 16th, 7-11pm ($5 entry or free with gallery membership). The party will feature a live orchestral performance of the Star Wars theme song in addition to other inspired improvisations by Adam Conrad’s Improvestra. The Headspace Collective will bring us back to the times of the original Star Wars release by spinning late 70’s era disco, and Andy Fitton will contribute a space-inspired ambient DJ set to the festivities. Star Wars costumes are strongly encouraged.

Whether you love it or hate it, Star Wars has been an influence on your life. Marking its 40th anniversary this year, spanning a multitude of media and connecting generations, the Star Wars franchise is pervasive to modern life. Even if you haven’t seen the films, countless musicians, artists, filmmakers and more have been shaped by the Star Wars-verse, the extensive range of products that have helped bring “nerd” culture into the mainstream. The eighth installment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15th, and Gamut’s original crew members Mark Dean and Kurtis “Kujo” Johnson thought it fitting to present a Minneapolis artists’ ode to Star Wars: In A Gallery Far, Far Away…

ABOUT THE CURATORS: The two curators came to Star Wars in different ways; Dean a die-hard fan from childhood, and Kujo more recently found affinity by watching the series with his son. The concept behind the exhibit is driven by Star Wars fandom. The curators are even planning to recreate a child’s bedroom, complete with posters, comics, and action figures. The exhibit was invitational at first, but as word spread about the show, Dean and Kujo decided to put out a call for submissions, recognizing that there are so many unique styles pushing the envelope in exciting and innovative ways. The artists were asked not only to think about the impact of Star Wars on their lives, but also to think about the larger galaxy and cosmos to gain inspiration for their works. Not limited to branded franchise imagery, artists were encouraged to explore Star Wars world phenomenon, inspiring a wide variety of works that collectively create an environment rich in imagination.[/bscolumns]

  8. Art Is My Weapon: MN, 2017 – Exhibit Finale & Panel Discussion

Comments Off on Art Is My Weapon: MN, 2017 – Exhibit Finale & Panel Discussion

    [bscolumns class=”one_half”]

Please join us for a respectful and constructive conversation about gun violence with law enforcement, community leaders, and exhibiting artists – set amidst the exhibition “Art Is My Weapon: MN.” This exhibit finale will be this Friday, October 27th, from 7-9pm, with the formal discussion beginning at 8pm.

Pillsbury United Communities (PUC) presents the local exhibit “Art Is My Weapon” at Gamut Gallery. In August 2016, PUC – in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Police Department – conducted a gun buyback to remove guns from the street with no questions asked. They collected up to 250 guns that were decommissioned and disseminated to locally recognized artists to use as raw materials in their art.

Painters, glass artists, sculptors, photographers, poets, and other artists used the decommissioned firearms to make works of art that address the issues of guns and gun violence in America. Each artist used the guns in their medium to express a thought, make a statement, open a discussion and stimulate thinking about guns in our culture.

Inspired by the national traveling exhibition, “Guns In The Hands of Artists” produced by Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, “Art Is My Weapon” is an outgrowth of that project that came to the Twin Cities in the summer of 2016. “Guns In the Hands of Artists” was first organized in New Orleans in the mid 1990s by artist Brian Borrello and Jonathan Ferrara to create a conversation about guns and gun violence in our society by bringing the conversation in the realm of art as the language for dialogue.

Art is My Weapon is curated locally by Nikki McComb of Pillsbury United Communities and John Schuerman of Instinct Gallery.[/bscolumns]

For Gamut Gallery’s annual “C4W: Call 4 Work” exhibition, we welcome Joel Coleman as guest curator. Coleman has been immersed in the local art scene with his tenure as the proprietor and curator of The Abstracted Art Gallery (2012-2014), and was familiar with the vast majority of local submissions. Currently, Coleman serves as a Made Here Arts Advisory Panel member, involved in the curation and installation of artwork in vacant downtown Minneapolis storefronts in partnership with the Hennepin Theater Trust.

As in past years, the call for art is open to all visual media. The selected works for C4W: 2017 reflect that inclusive approach and include video, installation, sculpture, photography, fiber, drawing, and painting. While there is no predetermined theme in the submission guidelines, the guest curator brings their own unique perspective and interpretation to the submitted works. This personalized stamp brings forward an underlying style that visually and conceptually connects the works in the exhibition. Coleman’s curatorial aesthetic has developed a show of bold colorful creation, favoring strong linework and figurative representation.

C4W: 2017 includes both artists familiar to Gamut as well as many newcomers, creating a diverse group of eclectic styles. A notable difference for this year’s exhibit is the quantity included; Coleman wanted to include as much artwork as possible, selecting a total of 66 works. Of the 49 featured artists, only 13 have previously shown at Gamut, leaving roughly 70% of the exhibiting artists new to the gallery. CL Martin, Christopher Palbicki, Benjamin Sagmoe, Natalia Berglund, Shye, Christopher Sorenson, and Russ White are among the familiar names. Exciting newcomers include Scott Roper, whose surreal acrylic paintings are so expertly done they appear computer generated at first glance; Jeremy Jones, creating large-scale sculptures that reference domestic life as a father; and Jennifer Chilstrom, co-owner of local boutique Showroom and fashion brand Kindred Folk.

Join us for the exhibit finale of #MASK, a solo show of new works from Morgan Pease. An artist talk will begin at 6pm, moderated by close friend and fellow artist Russ White.

The night will also feature a set from James Patrick, a sound artist who thrives on bringing together the creative energy and ideas of his community. Through collaboration and experimentation, he creates immersive environments that explore the evolving definitions of sound art. His record label and events are both heavily supported by some of the greatest names in electronic music, and his personal recordings continue to make waves in the international electronic music circuit.

    ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
For his first solo show in Minneapolis, artist Morgan Pease debuts an exhibition of textured depth. A departure from his previous body of work which relied heavily on structure and solid rules, Pease’s current work explores the chaotic impulsivity of the masking technique. Dubbed Mask due to its dualistic meaning, this series explores a visual representation of human insecurities, examining the divisive masks we wear in day-to-day life and the vulnerability of peeling away layers to reveal what is truly underneath.

Using a fractal imagery process that he’s been mastering for over a decade, Pease builds up layers of paint, and seals them with a gloss, resin or poly providing a contrast to the white matte color above. Working with nearly all recycled materials and custom building all of the panels and drop-in frames, Pease is hands-on during every part of the process in his art, creating pieces ranging in size from 6’’x6’’ to 4’x8’.

What started as an escapism for the “monotony” and repetitive nature of his past work, this series was birthed out of a desire simply to add color and texture to the base of his artwork. Far from simply whitewashing a color scheme, Pease creates unpredictable bursts of experimentation in the form of vivid hues peeking through in a playful nature. By adapting a new paint application process that is unstructured, more free-flowing and organic, Pease is forced to address his emotional response to his work, destroying his own masked misconceptions and insecurities surrounding the need to control and embracing chaos.[/bscolumns]

FEATURED ARTISTS: Alex Poepping, Alexandra Motz, Amelia LeBarron, Ana Taylor, Andres Guzman, Barret Lee, Brett Early, Biafra, Blaster, Booka B, Boxy Mouse, Brian Matthew Hart, Bunny Portia, Cassie Garner, Chris Larson, Christopher Sorenson, Dalsen, Dana Schmakel, Derek Meier, Donny Gettinger, Erica Parrott, Genie Castro, Impeach, I.V. For her first solo curation, Gamut Gallery co-owner Cassie Garner hand-selected a roster of national and local artists whose artwork highlights the bold energy and aesthetics of her personal taste. Using a 10” x 10” dimension constraint, each artist was asked to produce two pieces which speak to the collectable nature of tiny art and showcased their unique skill and artistic voice. Running the gamut of art styles, Sq2 features illustration, street art, graphic design, collage, abstract, photography, glitch, and mixed media. Unobtrusive yet not to be overlooked, compact art is the digestible alternative to its counterpart. Perfect for the apartment dweller or first time art buyer, tiny art begs to be collected, pairs well with others and carries a non-committal feel.

Uniting Gamut’s past with present, this exhibit welcomes back a handful of artists in Gamut’s repertoire, including Yuya Negishi, Bunny Portia, Paige Guggemos, Erin Sayer and members of the Rogue Citizen artist collective. A co-curator of last year’s Guerrilla Girls-inspired feminist exhibition, Second Sex, Genie Castro’s work explores the challenges of life as an artist, wife, mother and woman through the use of bold monotypes, masterful strokes, layers of vibrant color and subtle detail which brim with kinetic energy. Formerly a Minneapolite, currently NY-based, Kyle Quinn first showed at Gamut during the group exhibition medley, C4W. With nods to photographer icons Nan Goldin and Robert Mapplethrope and a splash of 70’s gay erotica, Quinn’s work explores the subversive and intensely personal.

Sq2 also features a few culturally known Gamut newcomers, including Booka B, Erica Parrot, Shön Troth, I.V. Hills, and Nicholas Harper, owner of Rogue Buddha Gallery. Best known for his portraits of women with elongated necks, Harper’s work examines magical realism and is heavily influenced by Russian and Orthodox Iconography, as well as literature and philosophy. Based in Las Vegas, street artist and zine writer, Shye creates anime-inspired illustrations and paintings. Whether using floral pastels, stark monochromatics, or captivating hues, her linework is sharp, leaning towards geometric shapes, patterns and mandala designs. Mash-ups both in concept and method, newcomer, Chris Larson’s illustrative works use digital, printmaking and bookbinding techniques to create queer meditations on beauty, identity, the environment and the esoteric.
