    Premiere screening of two internationally-produced documentary films: Les Invisibles 2.0 by Mina Agossi and A Life in Opera by Jade Patrick.

    Join us for the premiere screening of two international documentary films: Les Invisibles 2.0 by Mina Agossi and A Life in Opera by Jade Patrick. Much like Gamut’s current exhibit Singula curated by Rodrigo Onate, featuring muralists from Mexico, Chicago and Minneapolis – these two films offer global perspectives alongside palpably local arts in action. Hosted by Christopher Shillock and Jade Patrick, the evening will include a Q&A session after the films.

    In 2020, French filmmaker Mina Agossi asked artists from around the world to share how the pandemic has impacted them and their arts community. 18 artists working in all disciplines from 9 countries on 5 continents responded, including Gamut Gallery member Christopher Shillock, and Les Invisibles 2.0 is a collection of their reflections. Published poet, multimedia artist and decades long contributor to the Minneapolis art and music scene, Shillock highlights our neighborhood Elliot Park during his part of the film, including Gamut Gallery and the other small businesses here.     A Life in Opera by local filmmaker and gallerist Jade Patrick celebrates the career of Judith Schubert while exploring the intersection of musical theater and politics. Born in Minneapolis and educated at the University of Minnesota, Judith Schubert made countless sacrifices to pursue a career as a classical singer. Her quest took her to Germany – the modern home of opera – shortly before the fall of the Berlin wall. Soon after she found herself at Theater Plauen-Zwickau in Saxony where she would spend the next three decades dedicated to her profession and the surrounding community. Alongside colleagues young and old, Schubert reflects on her years as leading lady and transition into retirement in this reverent look into the world of opera.(35 min)[/bscolumns]

    MINA AGOSSI is a French singer-songwriter who has toured the world and was knighted as a Chevalier in the National Order of Merit by the French Government. She has 14 CDs, the latest being a participation with Ahmad Jamal entitled Marseille (2017).  Gifted with a supple voice, like many current singers she mixes jazz, rock, hip hop and world music without abandoning her own assertive musical personality. In 2021 Alchimie Productions will be releasing Paris Fantatasie, an album she recorded with the electro group Age 7. Les Invisibles 2.0 is her first documentary film.

    CHRISTOPHER SHILLOCK is a poet and activist. With the help of talented friends in the Twin Cities arts community, he has produced work in various media: 3 books of poetry, a stage show, a web-tv show. a poetry/video book with the help of a Jerome Foundation grant and a rock band called Invisible Jazz. He has performed twice in Paris with Mina Agossi.

    JADE PATRICK is a photo and video maker, and one of the co-founders of Gamut Gallery. Synergizing her photography and video practice with her experience as a visual arts curator and gallerist, Jade Patrick has focused her lens on artists, performance and music. A Life in Opera is Patrick’s first in-depth documentary project celebrating the career of Judith Schubert.

    A round robin-style artist talk featuring Destiny Davison, Christopher Carr, allison anne, Derek Meier, Stacey Combs, Leeya Jackson, Reggie LeFlore from the 2020 MPLSART Sketchbook Exhibition.

    This is not your typical artist talk. This talk will be a Q&A Chain — a method where the curator begins by selecting a piece that intrigues them and asks the artist a couple questions. From there, each chosen artist picks the next one, opening up the dialogue and inviting the artists to respond to each other. There will be seven artists, each having the opportunity to speak about their piece for approximately 5-10 minutes, and will conclude with closing remarks from the curator, Blaine Garrett and Gamut’s director, Cassie Garner.

    ABOUT the EXHIBITION
    MPLSART and Gamut Gallery present the MPLSART Sketchbook Project Exhibition. The exhibition has no defined theme, only a set of guidelines – works had to be new originals and available for under $500. Many artists drew inspiration from their sketchbook pages. In addition to featuring 35 original works, the exhibition will also be an opportunity to see the five original sketchbooks first-hand before going to auction at St. Paul based Revere Auctions.[/bscolumns]

    ABOUT the ARTISTS

    allison anne is a collagist, mail artist + graphic designer living in Minneapolis. Their work is the result of years of self-directed experimentation with many mediums, but explorations with paper collage have become their focus. Working with rescued, found or recycled materials as often as possible, allison uses collage, zine-making and correspondence art as ways to explore intersections and interactions between media, medium and function in their art practice. allison is a member of theTwin Cities Collage Collective that strives to provide an inclusive, safe space for individuals at all levels of creative ability to learn about collage.

    Christopher Carr is a mixed media artist originating from Atlanta, GA. He has shown work in various Atlanta area galleries including AmericasMart, Elevation Gallery and Lambert Gallery of Art. Christopher moved to Minneapolis in 2008. Most recently Christopher has shown in group exhibitions at Shrine NYC and The Minneapolis Institute of Art. His work often explores themes of escapism through imagination, and typically reflects his perspective of the world around him at the time the piece is created. He is also a thoughtful and enthusiastic collector of folk art.

    Derek Meier‘s work focuses on material exchange, immediacy, visual play and aesthetic dialogue. Deletion is a critical step in his creative process. He typically utilize paint and mixed media collage elements and work very fast and instinctively on many different pieces at once so that the body of work grows together. From there Derek identifies and isolates the moments he found to be successful and delete what he considers to be irrelevant. The deletion is often achieved by building small and large bodies of unmodulated color fields. Resting these next to other fields allows him to create honest, sculptural lines and forms by pinching paint together. The way landscapes are constructed is something that informs many of his paintings: the different ways their visual space is carved up and shared between natural and man-made elements and their varying agendas.

    Destiny Davison is a writer, illustrator, and multi-media artist exploring the real, the unreal, and the in-between from the Midwest.

    Leeya Rose Jackson is a painter, designer, and Art Director born and raised in Detroit, Mi. Her paintings and linocuts largely explore Black femme identity.

    Reggie LeFlore is a visual artist who creates to praise individual and collective stories through human portraiture.  His inspirations are drawn from the concepts and philosophies of Street Art culture and Illustration – using aerosol, acrylic paint and various graphic design techniques to construct pieces in varying styles, scales and surfaces. Reggie uses visual arts to amplify both his surrounding environments and the narratives contained within them.

    Stacey Combs aka stace of spades, is a freelance artist + illustrator living in South Minneapolis. She is self-taught, but have had a little help here and there. Stacey enjoys good food, music, travel, grungy ink line work, and walks (of any length) on the beach. 75% of the time she works while listening to classical renditions of video game soundtracks. Much of the work that she does is portraiture. While she does make a fair amount of fan art, Stacey often works with themes of environmental and social justice, drawing attention to unfairness and outdated social norms. Looking at her work, it might seem that she draws inspiration from the darkness in life. While that may be true, it all comes from a place of compassion and appreciation. she tries to shine light on, and even make light of, that darkness when she can… which is really the best that any of us can do.

    Setting the Groundwork– a solo exhibition by Reggie LeFlore exploring his take on the multidimensional elements of creating, storytelling, and relationships with space and time.

    A city is constructed for utilitarian purposes but for many artists, it is an eternal canvas or stage that, when used correctly, has the ability to stimulate dialogue within communities and abroad. Reggie LeFlore’s solo exhibition, Setting the Groundwork, incorporates his awareness of and appreciation for the multifaceted perspectives and practices of art in the public sphere to interrogate the power of space in the built environment and its connections to the natural world. 

    Informed by his everyday interactions and collaborations with folks in the community, organizers, graffiti writers, curators, and fellow artists, LeFlore’s work embraces the nuances and complexities of street art, guiding him throughout his creative projects. While Reggie primarily uses spray paint and hand-cut stencils to create vivid, large-scale portraits and imagery, intentionality and subjectivity, unconditional to medium, provide him the space to examine the various layers of identity and legacy of cultural abundance. Boundless to the constraints and aesthetic expectations, Setting the Groundwork showcases LeFlore’s exploration of storytelling and the strength and healing that comes from sharing our ancestry and honoring it. 

    Setting the Groundwork is Reggie LeFlore’s visual autobiography. Through the use of six portraits, each representing a different chapter of creativity in his life, viewers will have the opportunity to get a look into his inspirations as a child and to his collaborations across his life, highlighting his connections to community and the environments that surround it. Each foundational portrait represents a piece of LeFlore’s methodology, supported with elements containing his past, future and his current bookmark resounding on identity, afrocentricity and purpose. These experiences and influences create a larger than life, bold, vibrant story; a mural per se of his life, from his roots in Omaha to his life in Minneapolis.[/bscolumns]

    In 2020, Gamut & The Coven partnered up at the St. Paul location. We are very excited to announce that we will be extending this partnership in to 2021. We would like to introduce emerging artist, Lora Hlavsa, as our first showcased artist this year!

    Lora Hlavsa is a multi-disciplinary artist and illustrator living and working in Minneapolis, MN. An artist, illustrator, and designer by trade, her work is informed by intersectionality and inspired by femininity in its various forms. Lora was born in 1991 and that is visible through her pieces vibrant colors, mixed patterns, and maximalist compositions inspired by her own experience as a Millennial woman. Being raised by a Filipina mother and an American father in Minnesota and California, identity has been a core focus of Lora’s work and her pieces aim to convey a multidimensional world that reflects the many layers of the daily human experience.

    All works featured are for sale and created by Lora Hlavsa. Works purchased before June 4th 2021, will be available for pick-up, delivery or shipping on June 8th, 2021. Works sold after this date will remain on view in The Coven until September, 7th 2021 and will be available for pick-up, delivery or shipping on September, 10th 2021.     ABOUT THE COVEN
    The Coven opened their doors to 150 Founding Members on March 8, 2018- International Women’s Day. These original 150 bound together in the belief that an intersectional space with humans from every industry, age and socioeconomic background could exist in the Twin Cities. Their early support has now grown to 400+ members from many industries. Their 5-for-1 Community Funded Membership model has allowed them to welcome nearly 140 people from underserved communities at no cost, ensuring socioeconomics is never a barrier for access.

    In addition to being a creative, comfortable, and safe workspace for women, non-binary and trans folks, The Coven has hosted more than 300 curated events with a focus on developing each member’s whole self through economic empowerment, education, connection, and wellness.

    The 2020 MPLSART Sketchbook Project is a unique survey of the Twin Cities visual arts community during one of the most challenging years. 68 local artists contributed 120 pages of original work to a series of five traveling sketchbooks. The sketchbooks have been compiled into a beautiful 88 page hardcover book available for presale via Kickstarter March 2nd with all net-proceeds split among the featured artist.

    When the sketchbooks were near the end of their travels, MPLSART connected with Gamut Gallery to host a pop-up exhibit to showcase the five original sketchbooks. Collaboratively, the concept evolved into a full length exhibition, featuring new works from a wide selection of the artists contributing to the project. 

    Given the magnitude of artists and limited wallspace, an open call was sent to all 68 artists and the first 35 to respond would have the opportunity to showcase an original work in the exhibition. In less than 24 hours, the roster filled up with established and emerging artists, creating an eclectic exhibition featuring muralists, studio artists, street artists, graphic novelists, collage artists, and more. Gamut attendees may recognize familiar names that have been on exhibit at Gamut in the past, and can look forward to 13 new artists who will be exhibiting their work in the gallery for the first time.

    Gamut’s 10th annual holiday market Raging Art On (RAO) is back!  We’re bursting at the seams with locally sourced art, helping you answer that age old question: what do you get the person that has everything? The gallery is transformed, filled from floor-to-ceiling with paintings, fiberart, prints, jewelry, sculptures, and stocking stuffers to choose from. You’ll never find yourself agonizing over holiday shopping again! Raging Art On provides a unique, consumer-conscious experience that allows any adventurous shopper to find the perfect gift for anyone on their shopping list! With the exception of selecting the participants, Gamut leaves the rest up to the local artists to decide the amount of work they show and where to show it.

    Singula – An international group exhibition honoring rare elements that shape our identity

    Featuring muralists Los Calladitos, 2MIL, Lelo Zaa and Roco Drilo from Mexico, (sub)urban warrior, Liz Flores and Elloo from Chicago, Chuck U and Joy Spika from Minneapolis, all whom incorporate whimsical characters and dream-like imagery.

    Singula (adj.) derives from the Latin word, singulus, meaning single or separate; each one being individually unique and particular, possessing its own essence. As individuals experiencing and interpreting distinct realities– from our physical surroundings to our imaginations deep within the subconscious realm; Singula honors the distinguishable and rare elements that continuously shape our identity and understanding of the world.

    Singula is curated by Rodrigo Oñate and features muralists he has invited from Mexico, Chicago and Minneapolis, all whom incorporate whimsical characters and dream-like imagery to explore their cultural origins and storytelling practices that embolden critical connections across identities. Through a combination of colors, textures and intricate shapes and figures, this collection of muralists reveres the accessibility of public spaces to create vibrant and eclectic works that connect directly with the community. By highlighting everyday human experiences and marginalized narratives, this exhibition affirms street art is a powerful form of expression and solidarity among communities, stimulating the imagination and activism necessary for transformative change.

    We hope this work engages the viewer to reflect upon their own innermost identities and the dreams that we carry with us throughout our lifetime. This Summer, we invite you to enter the gallery filled with environments most commonly found in our flights of fantasy.

    C4W:2021 –     Gamut Gallery’s annual Call-4-Work exhibition.

    The beauty of C4W is that there’s no predetermined theme and it is not a show that influences what art should be. Instead, Candida Gonzalez, this year’s guest curator, brings their unique perspective and interpretation of the submitted works ranging the full “Gamut” of visual media.

    Through our guest curators lens & perspective they have curated the theme Elemental for this C4W. This exhibit will feature artworks that Cándida has chosen to represent one of the building blocks of life, from the four elements and human connections to life and death. For Cándida, these selected works represent some form of elemental energy that invites us to drop down from the chaos into the essential foundation of existence as life twists & changes around us.

    Balancing Act –     A solo exhibition by Barret Lee.

    Balancing Act showcases an unreleased body of work from Minneapolis painter, Barret Lee, encompassing the characters he has been illustrating since childhood and subject matters he has expanded upon since graduating from MCAD in 2016. Drawing from his biggest inspirations: surrealism, graffiti and cartoons, Lee utilizes a combination of acrylics, spray paint and occasional collage, expressing a whimsical theme throughout his work, personifying fantastical worlds that encourage the viewer to escape from the chaos of reality.

    Barret sees painting as a form of communicating unrestrained thoughts and softening the discord of everyday experience. His unique approach to surrealism stimulates the audience’s imagination and emotions. Naturally, this exhibition reveals that when we maximize our creative capacity, chaos and balance do not merely coexist but can actually live in harmony with one another.

    “Those three worlds I look to mold into one of modern escapism. I create fantastical characters and floating landscapes in search of a utopian outlook on life”, says Barret. Like many of his previous bodies of work, Balancing Act features constructs of paradisal wonderlands, however this solo exhibition focuses on satirizing the state of the world and how it affects our mental wellbeing and existence. His use of poppy, saturated colors will draw viewers in as they are given an opportunity to explore the macro- and microcosms that Lee has unleashed from his mind.

    This is not your typical artist talk. This talk will be a Q&A Chain — a method where the curator begins by selecting a piece that intrigues them and asks the artist a couple questions. From there, each chosen artist picks the next one, opening up the dialogue and inviting the artists to respond to each other. There will be ten artists, each having the opportunity to speak about their piece for approximately 5 minutes, and will conclude with closing remarks from the curator, Katie Garrett and Gamut’s director, Cassie Garner.

    About C4W:2020 – Lush Future

    Gamut Gallery’s annual Call-4-Work exhibition is not a show that influences what art should be. Instead, the chosen guest curator brings their unique perspective and interpretation of the submitted works ranging the full “Gamut” of visual media. 

    A theme emerged around ideas of projection, optimism, truth, and action – creating a wild, saturated world that breathes life into us from every angle. Revealed in a body of work by 42 artists, these elements convey a hopeful and restorative life ahead. Biological elements invite inspiration of growth through texture, material, pattern, and figure. This rich, fertile ground features jewel tones pulling everything together, welcoming wet, magnetic pieces to pull at the imagination and occupy your whole mind.

    Meet the Artists:
    Jessica Kitzman     is an interdisciplinary artist exploring identity tensions and personal/cultural history as a queer single mother.  Her bright and playful textile compositions often represent the land between mother and child: a messy and playful overlap of past, present, and future, full of impossible contradictions.  “Outside Myself” is a reflection on letting go as a child grows.  It’s about the physical and emotional labor of growing someone in your body, and the extreme feelings of watching them walk out into this world.  

    Lora Hlavsa is an artist, illustrator, and designer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her artwork is inspired largely by femininity, intersectionality, and multiculturalism. Born to an American father and a Filipino mother, Lora’s work is also an exploration of her own cultural heritage and the constant tension that arises from belonging to two worlds. Lora uses color and pattern to create detail-rich compositions that feel cluttered yet intriguing and suggest a world larger than the frame that the work is contained in.

    Merick Reed is a modern minimalist sculptor, photographer and designer living and working in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His work expresses simple, graphic geometry balancing spare aesthetics with playful assertion. Influenced by graphic and architectural design, his sculptural wall paintings are gestural arrangements; an interplay of dimensional facets and saturated monochromatic panels.

    Alejandro Junyao Zhang is a Chinese interdisciplinary artist who builds relations between performance, 3D animation, video, electronic music, experimental images, and installation, currently based in Minneapolis, MN. His art practice focuses on the visibility of the Chinese queer identity and the composition of the physical or virtual identity habitats by utilizing the space, architectural props, and virtual reality through post-club aesthetics.

    Philipo Dyauli is a painter, illustrator and draftsman from Tanzania and currently resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He works from the Northrup King Building as a part of the Studio 400 program. His work is inspired by pop art, film, illustration and graphic design creating a body of work that reflects his life between his two homes in the United States and East Africa. Often Philipo’s work ivolves depictions of his favorite family traditions, friends and personal heroes.

    Catrin Magnuson is a multidisciplinary artist currently working with sculptural forms in clay and industrial felt.  Using the iconography of geology as a starting place, she utilizes a muted color palette that suggests earth, metal, charcoal.  Catrin is drawn to the quiet remnants of violent movement, connecting deep time and macro processes to a personal timeline.  She holds a MFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design, a BFA from CU Boulder and filmmaking/screenwriting degrees from MCTC.

    Russ White is an artist and writer living in Minneapolis and working out of his studio in the Casket Arts Building. Focusing mainly on figurative colored pencil drawings and mixed media collages, White uses a brightly colored, almost cartoonish realism to address complicated personal and political themes. He also works as a writer and editor for MPLSART.COM.

    Reid Olson is a painter currently living in Minneapolis. His work spans a wide range of media including painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, photo transfer and fashion in a distinctive style that is all his own. What began as a passion project for Reid has now become a self-sustaining enterprise focused on portrayal of the mystery of the human condition.

    Nicole Thomas is a second generation Vietnamese American practicing interdisciplinary arts, curation, and writing in Minneapolis. Her visual arts practice centers the Southeast Asian diaspora experience in the United States and mental health effects of generational trauma. In response to unresolved, dysfunctional behavioral habits, Nicole creates in series and collections to describe patterns and a continuation of unhealed wounds. The dynamics between loss/longing and memory/resilience are common themes throughout her studio practice.

    Kelsi Sharp aka Kelsi Sharp is an African American artist and sign maker. Growing up in the American Southwest, Kelsi is strongly influenced by the signage, gas stations, and other relics found on the historic Route 66 highway. After studying construction methods, earning certifications in fabrication technologies, and apprenticing in an iconic Santa Fe sign shop, Kelsi started Sharp Design Co., a signage and environmental design company based in the Midwest.

    Gamut Gallery introduces their WebXR virtual gallery and digitally simulated art happenings; after months of cancelled exhibitions and events.“Blank Slate” is the first-of-its-kind extended reality art exhibition that merges virtual and physical worlds. Keeping with Gamut’s collaborative ethos, the creative force of curator and gallery co-owner Cassie Garner and the VR designer Brian Skalak, of REM5, brought this idea to life. “The addition of untethered headsets made the experience possible, this new technology allowed participants to wander the physical gallery while viewing virtual art.” – stated Skalak

    Hours were spent digitally reproducing and beta testing the virtual 1:1 scale replication of the Gamut space. The Blank Slate opening featured an innovative experiential event where attendees were delighted, throwing their arms up with laughter, and filling the room with gasps. The initial reaction was shock as they entered an empty gallery bearing only blank walls. Once the attendees put on the wireless VR headsets (facilitated by REM5) the gallery was transformed with bright, bold colors, abstract line works and non traditional portraits popped off the walls in our new virtual environment. 

    In addition to this cutting-edge in person event, anyone in the world can explore the virtual version of the gallery right from a web browser in the comfort of their own home. This accessibility allows collectors from around the globe to expand their art collections through the click of the mouse. Gamut members and guests can check in 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without leaving their home. Choose your own “avatar”, invite your friends to join you online and mingle.

    Cassie Garner is a graphic designer, art curator, and gallerist living and working in Minneapolis. A founder of Gamut Gallery from the very beginning, Cassie began as the graphic designer and has grown with the gallery overtime. Three years into business when the gallery was forced to relocate, Cassie joined the ownership team and became the gallery manager where she applied her many years of retail and customer service experience. In spring of 2018 she transitioned into the role of Gallery Director and now leads operations and project management for exhibitions and events. Her other passions include collecting art, dancing, making connections, and spending time in her Southside home.

     

     

     

    Brian Skalak is a multi-disciplinary creative based in Minneapolis and the Marketing and Events Manager at REM5 VR Lab. Through this collaboration with Gamut, he was able to lead the charge from the technical production of the virtual gallery and cutting-edge interactive events. Additionally, Skalak founded Second Sight Visuals, a digital art platform that merges tech and reality. He has produced live visuals for numerous festivals and concerts, interactive installations, visual experiences for music and a collection of nearly infinite experiments in between. You can see the work of Second Sight Visuals featured in the courtyard of the virtual Gamut Gallery.

    Foraged, is a collaboration between textile artist Annabella Sardelis and visual artist Annie Irene Hejny, two artists who have dedicated their lives to celebrating the natural beauty of Minnesota in their art. Their unique artistic process involves months of foraging for local plants to create natural dyes and pigments that grow abundantly around the Twin Cities.     Annie Irene Hejny is a visual artist who creates abstract paintings and drawings with natural materials. Rooted in a strong connection to the earth and her home state of Minnesota, She has successfully completed nearly 50 commissioned projects for galleries, private collections, and public institutions, both locally and nationwide, that utilize organic foraged materials. She has participated in several notable residencies and mentorship programs, and exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions. Her largest solo exhibition to-date at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (2018) received 10,000+ visitors and one painting remains in the museum’s permanent collection.     Annabella Sardelis is a textile artist and founder of INDIGO & SNOW, a Minneapolis studio located in the Casket Arts building that is dedicated to sustainable design. In addition to producing hand-dyed and painted apparel, accessories and decor, she teaches natural indigo workshops with a focus on zero waste practices. She exhibits her work nationally and has been featured in the New York Times, Elle, and Apartment Therapy, as well as other publications.     Carolyn Halliday has been showing her work nationally and internationally for nearly two decades, earning a variety of awards. She was a 2013 fiscal year recipient of a Mn State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant. In 2015 she was appointed the first member and Chair of the newly created National Artists Advisory Council for Textile Center. She was just announced as a recipient of Textile Center’s Spun Gold Award 2020, honoring artists and advocates for a lifetime of dedication to fiber art and textile center. Materiality, textile tradition stretched to the non-traditional, and ecological/evolutionary/biological concerns form the triad that drives Halliday’s art work. She uses the vocabulary of textiles to create sculptural forms that reflect her experiences with nature.

    Her work is in the collection of Minnesota Historical Society( 2001, 2006) and the Weisman Art Museum (2016). In spring of 2014, she was the featured visual artist for an episode of the televised tpt production Minnesota Originals. She was one of the showcased artists in the 2006 tpt production of Textile Center’s Artwear in Motion Runway Show. Halliday is a featured artist in the books: Sculpture, Artistry in Fiber, Vol.2; Knitting Art: 150 Innovative Works from 18 Contemporary Artists ; and How to Be a Feminist Artist: Investigations from the Women’s Art Institute. Her work has also appeared in Surface Design Journal,Interweave Knits, and Jacquard, a cura della Fondazione arte della Seta Lisio, Italy.

    She was trained in the Critical Response protocol while a protegee in the WARM Mentor program, which she has been facilitating for two decades. A mentor in the WARM and Textile Center Mentor programs, she continues to privately mentor artists.     Gamut Gallery’s annual Call 4 Work exhibition never has a pre-fixed theme. The chosen guest curator brings their unique perspective and interpretation of the submitted works ranging the full “Gamut” of visual media. When Teqen Zéa-Aida accepted the challenge of curating this year’s C4W: 2019, he allowed his mind to lead quietly, without prejudice, while sorting through the 722 submissions from 177 artists.

    Through the artists’ works, Zéa-Aida began to feel a very real sense of urgency emerge, an immediacy borne of the political, cultural, and environmental turmoil of our times. As a result, he has selected works from 36 artists, creating a collection of more than 40 artistic statements about place and space, sensory reactions to drastically changing—and degrading—surroundings. This year’s show features works that are centered around community, emotions, and people; a push back against loss of self.

    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Dawid Mludzik  is a Polish-American multidisciplinary artists currently living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mludzik is a veteran engineer of the United States Air Force. He studied at the University of North Dakota as well as the Florence School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. Mludzik recieved a BA in Art, from the University of North Dakota in 2018. His works have been displayed in private galleries, museums, as well as international exhibitions.

    Meg Lionel Murphy compulsively paints heartbroken womxn that magically grow larger, stronger, and scarier than the world around them. As the paintings grow in number, she grows just a little larger, stronger, and scarier too. When not painting, she divides her time between working as the Art + Story Director of Pollen and volunteering as Editor-in-Chief of Paper Darts.

    Shhhhame is a non binary artist living in Saint Paul working in various mediums. Although their current primary focus is painting they also engage in mixed media, design, illustration, film, photography, woodwork, & textile. Growing up in a art based family structure influenced many early creative endeavors. Shame learned how to sew before they could read at age seven & fell deeply in love with the satisfaction & control of manifesting dreams. Currently they are exploring relationship with self through portraits & textiles of humans who inspire self love.

    KOLDKRAL is a Turkish artist based in Minneapolis. Coming from a background in music, more recently he explores art through a visual variety. From Painting, to photography, and miscellaneous design – KOLDKRAL uses art as a coping mechanism to escape the confines of formality and structure in everyday life. Much of the themes present in their art are provoked by the desire to stray away from surface level realities. “Music is something far more than what my ears can hear. At first I started to see colours in music..Now it’s become scenes, landscapes, beings, and worlds. Music and visual arts hold the same weight for me. It’s a warhead for me to push a button on that will obliterate toxic worlds that we are living through. The days where a person could only focus on one medium are long gone. I’ve got the mind and will to create worlds from anything – how could I not do what I want?”
